Short-term exposure of anticoagulant rodenticides leads to the toxin accumulation from prey (Rattus losea) to predator (Elanus caeruleus).

Rodenticides are widely used around the world since the 1950s. In Taiwan, an anti-rodent operation initiated 1977 and became a regular action annually implied by the government until 2014. This anti-rodent operation caused many animals of non-target species being exposed by rodenticides and became an environmental issue. The Black-winged Kite (Elanus caeruleus) is a small-sized diurnal raptor widely distributed in the Old World continent. Since 2000, a newly colonized population of this species occurred in Taiwan. Although the Black-winged Kites may suffer from the threats of rodenticides, the

The effect of albinism on avian predator attack rates in eastern garter snakes.

Albinism is a conspicuous and distinctive phenotype arising from the absence of melanin in the integument that has been documented in all major vertebrate groups. With few exceptions, albinism is rare in natural populations, suggesting that it incurs significant fitness costs as compared to wild-type phenotypes. One possible explanation for this rarity is that albinos experience higher predation risk as compared to wild-type individuals. We tested this hypothesis by comparing rates of attack by avian predators on immobile clay model proxies that mimicked wild-type and albino eastern garter sna

Photoprotective benefits of pigmentation in the transparent plankton community: a comparative species experimental test.

Plankton live under the countervailing selective pressures of predation and ultraviolet radiation (UVR). In lakes, zooplankton are transparent reducing visibility to predatory fishes but are pigmented in the absence of fishes, hypothetically reducing UVR damage. In the sea, planktivorous fishes are widespread, so plankton typically are transparent and ascend to productive surface waters at night to forage and descend during the day to reduce visibility to predators. However, larvae of some species face the unique constraint of traveling in surface currents in the daytime during migrations betw

Age-dependent effects of predation risk on night-time hypothermia in two wintering passerine species.

Small animals that winter at northern latitudes need to maximize energy intake and minimize energy loss. Many passerine birds use night-time hypothermia to conserve energy. A potential cost of night-time hypothermia with much theoretical (but little empirical) support is increased risk of night-time predation, due to reduced vigilance and lower escape speed in hypothermic birds. This idea has never been tested in the wild. We, therefore, increased perceived predation risk in great tits (Parus major) and blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) roosting in nest boxes during cold winter nights to measure

Visual Stimuli for the Induction of Hunting Behavior in Cuttlefish Sepia pharaonis.

Cuttlefish exhibit typical hunting behavior, including elongating tentacles against specific prey such as prawn and mysid shrimp. Cuttlefish hunting behavior involves three different actions: attention, positioning, and seizure. Hunting behavior is innate and stereotypic behavior, and it is present in newly hatched juveniles. Factors associated with prey are known to induce this behavior, similar to the sign stimulus, whereby young herring chicks imitate pecking behavior against a red dot on their parent's bill. Although the hunting behavior of cuttlefish has been described and used as an indi

A PUFFERFISH (TETRADON NIGROVIRIDIS) AVAILABLE IN THE COMMON PET TRADE HARBORS LETHAL CONCENTRATIONS OF TETRODOTOXIN: A CASE STUDY OF POISONING IN A CUVIER'S DWARF CAIMAN (PALEOSUCHUS PALPEBROSUS).

Many pufferfish possess tetrodotoxin (TTX). Unaware of this fact, the owner of a 3-mo-old pet Cuvier's dwarf caiman ( Paleosuchus palpebrosus ) fed the caiman a green spotted pufferfish ( Tetraodon nigroviridis ), acquired from a local discount department store. The caiman was nonresponsive within an hour of consumption of the fish. The caiman was presented for veterinary evaluation but died despite intensive medical care. High-performance liquid chromatography and a competitive inhibition enzyme immunoassay were used to determine whether the pufferfish was tetrodotoxic and whether the decease

Dynamic visual cues induce jaw opening and closing by tiger beetles during pursuit of prey.

In dynamic locomotory contexts, visual cues often trigger adaptive behaviour by the viewer, yet studies investigating how animals determine impending collisions typically employ either stationary viewers or objects. Here, we describe a dynamic situation of visually guided prey pursuit in which both impending prey contact and escape elicit observable adaptive behaviours in the pursuer, a predatory beetle. We investigated which visual cues may independently control opening and closing of the beetle's jaws during chases of prey dummies. Jaw opening and closing typically occur when prey is within

Lionfish predators use flared fin displays to initiate cooperative hunting.

Despite considerable study, mystery surrounds the use of signals that initiate cooperative hunting in animals. Using a labyrinth test chamber, we examined whether a lionfish, Dendrochirus zebra, would initiate cooperative hunts with piscine partners. We found that D. zebra uses a stereotyped flared fin display to alert conspecific and heterospecific lionfish species Pterois antennata to the presence of prey. Per capita success rate was significantly higher for cooperative hunters when compared with solitary ones, with hunt responders assisting hunt initiators in cornering the prey using their

Timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) use chemical cues to select ambush sites.

Chemicals left by organisms moving through the environment are used by other organisms to mediate interspecific interactions. Most studies of chemical eavesdropping focus on prey responding to chemical cues from predators, despite the fact that chemical cues are frequently used by predators as a source of information about prey. Crotalus horridus uses a foraging strategy that is widespread among sedentary predators: the snake chooses a site where it is likely to encounter prey and remains immobile for many hours. I investigated this ambush hunting behavior in captive-raised timber rattlesnakes

Innate responses of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis to a herbivore-induced plant volatile.

The responses of the predatory mite P. persimilis to herbivore-induced plant volatiles are at least partly genetically determined. Thus, there is potential for the evolution of this behaviour by natural selection. We tested whether distinct predator genotypes with contrasting responses to a specific herbivore-induced plant volatile, i.e. methyl salicylate (MeSa), could be found in a base population collected in the field (Sicily). To this end, we imposed purifying selection on individuals within iso-female lines of P. persimilis such that the lines were propagated only via the individual that

Prolonged effects of repeated cocaine on medial prefrontal cortex dopamine response to cocaine and a stressful predatory odor challenge in rats.

The present study examined the effects of seven daily saline (1 ml/kg, i.p.) or cocaine injections (15 mg/kg, i.p.) on extracellular dopamine levels in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) after challenge with cocaine or stressful predatory odor presentation given 1 week (early withdrawal) or 3 weeks later (late withdrawal). Cocaine challenge at early withdrawal produced an increase in dopamine levels that was temporally shifted so that maximal levels of dopamine were significantly higher and attained 20 min earlier in the cocaine-pretreated group (maximal levels of saline controls=378% increas

Differential Effectiveness of Anti-Predator Defenses in Non-Native Leaf Beetles Against Native Frogs and Lizards.

Predators constitute an important source of biotic resistance influencing the establishment and population increase of non-native species, and the strength of this resistance depends on how effectively predators tolerate or overcome the defenses of non-native prey. In this study, we compared the effectiveness of defenses in the non-native leaf beetle Lema diversipes and its closely related native congener L. decempunctata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) against two native predators: the Japanese tree frog, Dryophytes japonicus (Anura: Hylidae), and the Japanese skink, Plestiodon japonicus (Squamat

Discrete-time predator-prey dynamics under human shielding: stability and bifurcation analysis.

We propose and analyze a discrete-time predator-prey model incorporating a human-shield effect, whereby prey use human-dominated areas as partial refuges to reduce predation risk. Starting from a Rosenzweig-MacArthur-type framework, we introduce a nonnegative shielding intensity h acting through two coupled mechanisms: it increases the effective prey carrying capacity K ( h ) and weakens predation through the saturation parameter γ ( h ) in a Holling type II functional response. We determine the equilibrium points, derive feasibility and local stability conditions, and identify the main bifu

Evidences of sibling bites in porbeagle shark (Lamna nasus) embryos.

The porbeagle, top predator with amphi-temperate, coastal and oceanic distribution, ranges 26-57°S in the Southwest Atlantic. An injured, pregnant female was found stranded on the coast of Quequén, with two male embryos in each uterus. The embryos in the right uterus differed in size, and the smaller one had injuries. Our hypothesis is that embryos have the ability to perform lateral movements that allow them to bite obliquely along the anteroposterior axis of the uterine sac, so that the lacerations of the smaller embryo would be the result of lateral bites from its sibling, as the latter wou

The combined effects of elevated predation risk and anthropogenic noise on dwarf mongoose vigilance behaviour.

Anthropogenic noise is a pervasive pollutant in the world's ecosystems, with numerous studies demonstrating negative physiological, developmental and behavioural impacts across taxa. However, research has tended to focus on anthropogenic noise in isolation; many species often experience this pollutant in conjunction with other anthropogenic and natural stressors. Here, we used a field experiment to investigate the combined effects of a sequential elevation in perceived predation risk followed by exposure to road noise on the vigilance behaviour of dwarf mongooses (Helogale parvula). As expecte

Learning and cognition in highspeed decision making.

It is widely accepted that more time and information yield better decisions. However, some decisions manage to be extremely fast and yet accurate. The trick of such highspeed decisions appears to be the use of simplifying heuristics that works well for the most common condition but lacks flexibility otherwise. Here, we describe an unexpected level of flexibility in a complex highspeed decision that is made faster than an Olympic sprinter can respond to the start gun. In this decision, archerfish observe the initial speed, direction, and height of falling prey and then use these initial values

Correction factors for prey size estimation from PenguCams.

The use of animal-borne cameras enables scientists to observe behaviours and interactions that have until now, gone unseen or rarely documented. Researchers can now analyse prey preferences and predator-prey interactions with a new level of detail. New technology allows researchers to analyse prey features before they are captured, adding a new dimension to existing prey analysis techniques, which have primarily relied on examining partially or fully digested prey through stomach flushing. To determine prey size, the video footage captured needs a correction factor (pixel:mm ratio) that allows

Evidence for tactile 3D shape discrimination by octopus.

Octopuses integrate visual, chemical and tactile sensory information while foraging and feeding in complex marine habitats. The respective roles of these modes are of interest ecologically, neurobiologically, and for development of engineered soft robotic arms. While vision guides their foraging path, benthic octopuses primarily search "blindly" with their arms to find visually hidden prey amidst rocks, crevices and coral heads. Each octopus arm is lined with hundreds of suckers that possess a combination of chemo- and mechanoreceptors to distinguish prey. Contact chemoreception has been demon

Habitat selection and influence on hunting success in female Australian fur seals.

Determining the factors influencing habitat selection and hunting success in top predators is crucial for understanding how these species may respond to environmental changes. For marine top predators, such factors have been documented in pelagic foragers, with habitat use and hunting success being linked to chlorophyll-a concentrations, sea surface temperature and light conditions. In contrast, little is known about the determinants of benthic marine predators. The Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) is a benthic-diving forager that has a breeding and foraging distribution
