A principal-components analysis of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory and further evidence of its construct validity.

We examined the internal and external validity of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI). Study 1 explored the internal structure of the NPI responses of 1,018 subjects. Using principal-components analysis, we analyzed the tetrachoric correlations among the NPI item responses and found evidence for a general construct of narcissism as well as seven first-order components, identified as Authority, Exhibitionism, Superiority, Vanity, Exploitativeness, Entitlement, and Self-Sufficiency. Study 2 explored the NPI's construct validity with respect to a variety of indexes derived from observati

Creation of the gender-equitable school index for secondary schools using principal components analysis.

BACKGROUND: Higher schooling attainment for girls is associated with improved maternal and child health outcomes. In low- and middle-income countries, girls drop out of school at higher rates than boys beginning in early adolescence due to factors such as son preference and lack of access to menstrual supplies. METHODS: Using principal components analysis, we created a gender-equitable school (GES) index with data from 159 secondary schools in Nepal to measure school-level factors that may influence girls' secondary school pass rates. RESULTS: A component describing girls' safety and hygiene

Common functional principal components analysis: a new approach to analyzing human movement data.

In many human movement studies angle-time series data on several groups of individuals are measured. Current methods to compare groups include comparisons of the mean value in each group or use multivariate techniques such as principal components analysis and perform tests on the principal component scores. Such methods have been useful, though discard a large amount of information. Functional data analysis (FDA) is an emerging statistical analysis technique in human movement research which treats the angle-time series data as a function rather than a series of discrete measurements. Analysis of the respiratory flow cycle morphology in chronic heart failure patients applying principal components analysis.

The study of flow cycle morphology provides new information about the breathing pattern. This study proposes the characterization of cycle morphology in chronic heart failure patients (CHF) patients, with periodic (PB) and non-periodic breathing (nPB) patterns, and healthy subjects. Principal component analysis is applied to extract a respiratory cycle model for each time segment defined by a 30-s moving window. To characterize morphology of the model waveform, a number of parameters are extracted whose significance is evaluated in terms of the following three classification problems: CHF pati

Subtype identification of clinical and thrombus imaging features in acute ischemic stroke: using clustering analysis and principal component analysis.

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) presents significant heterogeneity in clinical and thrombus imaging characteristics, which can profoundly impact therapeutic decisions and outcomes. This study analyzed 520 AIS patients who underwent endovascular thrombectomy, integrating clinical variables and thrombus imaging features to identify potential subtypes through unsupervised clustering and principal component analysis. Three distinct subtypes emerged: Cluster 1, characterized by middle cerebral artery occlusion, shorter thrombus lengths, and favorable outcomes; Cluster 2, comprising predominantly male s

Principal component analysis of adipokine, metabolic, oxidative, and inflammatory markers associated with insulin resistance in metabolic syndrome.

Insulin resistance is a chronic, low-grade inflammatory condition and a central pathological feature of obesity and related conditions, including metabolic syndrome (MetS). Oxidative stress, inflammatory pathways, and dysregulation of adipokine secretion may contribute to its development. This study aimed to clarify these biological relationships using principal component analysis (PCA) in individuals with MetS. The study involved 190 adults diagnosed with MetS. Serum concentrations of metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein [hs-CRP], interleukin-6 [IL-6], an

Standing balance test predicts the Berg Balance Scale score in patients with stroke using principal component analysis.

A comprehensive analysis integrating kinematic, kinetic, and electromyographic data to evaluate balance impairments in patients with stroke is lacking. We investigated balance disparities in patients with balance impairment following stroke using principal component analysis (PCA). The complete waveforms of lower-limb-joint angles, centre of pressure, and muscle activity in 43 stroke patients during four Berg Balance Scale (BBS) standing balance tasks were analysed. Multiple regression analysis using principal components (PCs) was conducted to predict BBS scores. Thirteen patients had balance

Principal component analysis differentiates the receptor binding profiles of three antipsychotic drug candidates from current antipsychotic drugs.

The receptor binding affinities of the three drug candidates 1 (SLV310), 2 (SLV313), and 3 (SLV314) were positioned against the results from nine (a)typical antipsychotic drugs. The receptor binding data from sixteen monoaminergic receptors served as the input in a principal component analysis (PCA). The PCA outcome revealed a unique binding profile of 1, 2, and 3 as compared with the reference compounds 4-8 and 10-12. The weight gain inducing antipsychotics 6-8 clustered in the PCA by scoring strongly negative for factor 1. The hyperprolactinaemia related antipsychotics 4, 5, 10, and 12 clust

Joint robust principal component analysis and truncated-SVD denoising algorithm for computer-aided alignment of projection lens.

To address the limited convergence accuracy in the computer-aided alignment of projection objectives caused by interferometric measurement noise, this study proposes a hierarchical denoising algorithm that integrates non-centered truncated singular value decomposition (SVD) with robust principal component analysis (RPCA). Dense noise is first reduced by applying truncated SVD directly to the repeated-measurement matrix acquired at each field, without row-wise centering or subsequent mean restoration. The field-wise estimates reconstructed from the retained singular components are then concaten

Use of Principal Component Analysis to Discover Distinct Patterns of Serologic Class II Subtypes With WHO Specificity.

OBJECTIVES: Patient serum for anti-HLA antibodies are tested with purified antigens covalently affixed to beads as targets. Serologic nomenclature from the World Health Organization (WHO) is currently used to specify the reactivity of antibodies, although target antigens are defined at a finer allelic level. We investigated whether different reactivity patterns could be present at the allele level of a single WHO serologic antigen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed 2389 serum samples from 1215 patients waiting for solid-organ transplant by using class II single antigen beads for detection of

Effect of knee sleeves on joint angle variability during gait in older adults: a principal component analysis.

INTRODUCTION: As the global elderly population increases, maintaining walking ability and minimizing fall risk among older adults is crucial for their health and wellbeing. Knee sleeves are commonly utilized in geriatric sports and rehabilitation to stabilize knee joint movement and enhance gait stability. However, their effects on joint kinematics during walking in healthy older adults, particularly on joint angle variability-a factor associated with fall risk-remain inadequately explored. This study aimed to investigate the influence of knee sleeves on joint angle variability during gait in
