The effect of processing speed on verbal and visual memory of adults with a chronic acquired brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Memory problems are among the most frequently reported cognitive complaints by individuals with an acquired brain injury (ABI). Processing speed and working memory deficits are often the result of ABI. These cognitive deficits significantly impact the acquisition and retention of information necessary for memory formation. This study investigated the influence of processing speed and working memory on immediate and delayed recall for verbal and visual memory, as well as overall memory recall in adults living with a chronic ABI. METHODS: Sixty-three participants living with a chroni

Bilateral fracture of the superior articular process of S1 - An unusual fracture seen in a speed skater.

Background Fractures of the superior articular process are rarely seen in clinical practice. Repetitive spinal movements may lead to fractures of the pars interarticularis, resulting in spondylolysis. Traumatic spinal fractures often involve the vertebral body, transvers and/or the spinous processes. The superior articular processes, however, are seldom involved in both traumatic and stress-induced fractures. Purpose The purpose of this report is to present an unusual case of symptomatic bilateral fracture of the superior articular process of the sacrum in a 21-year-old speed skater. Study des

Processing speed and sustained attention in bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive impairment is a core feature of bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Deficits in processing speed (PS) and sustained attention (SA) may be particularly impaired and may underpin a broader profile of deficits, however current knowledge of the nature of these impairments is limited by heterogeneous results in the literature. Few reviews to date have attempted to disentangle sources of heterogeneity to assess the presence and magnitude of impairments in PS and SA in BD and MDD. METHODS: One hundred and three studies were reviewed to examine performance

Paradoxical effect of cumulative stress exposure on information processing speed in Hispanics/Latinos with elevated heart rate variability.

Chronic stress has a deleterious effect on prefrontal lobe functioning. Empirical evidence suggests elevated vagal tone, indexed by elevated heart rate variability (HRV), mitigates the effect of mental stress on frontal lobe function. Here, the mitigating effect of HRV on stress-related decrements in cognitive performance is assessed based on information processing speed (DSST), word fluency and verbal learning task performance. Artifact free electrocardiogram (ECG) data was analyzed from 1420 Hispanic/Latino adults from the Sociocultural Ancillary of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study

Associations of subclinical cerebral small vessel disease and processing speed in non-demented subjects: A 7-year study.

Markers of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) have previously been associated with age-related cognitive decline. Using longitudinal data of cognitively healthy, older adults (N = 216, mean age at baseline = 70.9 years), we investigated baseline status and change in white matter hyperintensities (WMH) (total, periventricular, deep), normal appearing white matter (NAWM), brain parenchyma volume (BPV) and processing speed over seven years as well as the impact of different covariates by applying latent growth curve (LGC) models. Generally, we revealed a complex pattern of associations between

Emotion Processing in Children with Conduct Problems and Callous-Unemotional Traits: An Investigation of Speed, Accuracy, and Attention.

This study aimed to assess whether callous-unemotional traits (CU) are associated with deficits in emotion recognition independent of externalizing behavior and whether such deficits can be explained by aberrant attention. As previous studies have produced inconsistent results, the current study included two different emotion recognition paradigms and assessed the potential influence of factors such as processing speed and attention. The study included N = 94 children (eight to 14 years) with an oversampling of children with conduct problems (CP) and varying levels of CU-traits. Independent of

Weaker Cerebellocortical Connectivity Within Sensorimotor and Executive Networks in Schizophrenia Compared to Healthy Controls: Relationships with Processing Speed.

Background: The cognitive dysmetria theory of schizophrenia proposes that communication between the cerebellum and cerebral cortex is disrupted by structural and functional abnormalities, resulting in psychotic symptoms and cognitive deficits. Methods: Using publicly available data, resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) was calculated from 20 hemispheric cerebellar lobules as seed regions of interest to the rest of the brain. Group differences in rsFC between individuals with schizophrenia (SZ) and healthy controls (HCs) were computed, and relationships between rsFC and symptom severity

Bilateral parietal tRNS improves processing speed on the paced auditory serial addition test (PASAT): behavioral and ERP evidence.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive control is essential for goal-directed behavior and is often impaired in neurological conditions. Transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) has shown potential for cognitive enhancement, but its electrophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined whether bilateral parietal tRNS modulates paced auditory serial addition test (PASAT) performance (reaction time and accuracy) and event-related potential (ERP) indices of cognitive control. METHODS: In a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled crossover study, 40 healthy adults received active high-frequency

Improved processing speed and decreased functional connectivity in individuals with chronic stroke after paired exercise and motor training.

After stroke, impaired motor performance is linked to an increased demand for cognitive resources. Aerobic exercise improves cognitive function in neurologically intact populations and may be effective in altering cognitive function post-stroke. We sought to determine if high-intensity aerobic exercise paired with motor training in individuals with chronic stroke alters cognitive-motor function and functional connectivity between the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), a key region for cognitive-motor processes, and the sensorimotor network. Twenty-five participants with chronic stroke wer

Device-Measured Physical Activity and Cognitive Processing Speed Impairment in a Large Sample of Persons with Multiple Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: There is accumulating evidence regarding the beneficial effects of physical activity (PA) on cognitive processing speed in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, one overarching limitation of this research is that researchers have not recruited samples who have the actual problem of being studied (i.e., cognitive processing speed impairment). This study examined associations between device-measured PA and cognitive processing speed in a large sample of persons with MS overall and between those with and without cognitive processing speed impairment. METHOD: Three hundred eig

Understanding the association between psychomotor processing speed and white matter hyperintensity: A comprehensive multi-modality MR imaging study.

Cognitive processing speed is crucial for human cognition and declines with aging. White matter hyperintensity (WMH), a common sign of WM vascular damage in the elderly, is closely related to slower psychomotor processing speed. In this study, we investigated the association between WMH and psychomotor speed changes through a comprehensive assessment of brain structural and functional features. Multi-modal MRIs were acquired from 60 elderly adults. Psychomotor processing speeds were assessed using the Trail Making Test Part A (TMT-A). Linear regression analyses were performed to assess the ass

Single-session transcranial direct current stimulation induces enduring enhancement of visual processing speed in patients with major depression.

Attentional deficits are considered key cognitive symptoms in major depressive disorder (MDD) arising from abnormal activation patterns within dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) alertness networks. Altering these activity patterns with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) might thus ameliorate alertness-dependent cognitive deficits in MDD patients. In a double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled study, we investigated the effect of a single session of anodal tDCS (2 mA) applied to the left dlPFC on different parameters of visual attention based on Bundesen's theory of visual atten

Exploring Social Determinants of Cognitive Functioning: History of Criminal Legal System Involvement and Processing Speed among Older Black Americans.

Cognitive impairment disproportionately impacts Black Americans in later life. Black Americans are also disproportionately in contact with the criminal legal system (CLS; e.g., arrest, incarceration). Emerging research indicates that CLS involvement has negative implications for health over the lifespan, including later-life cognitive functioning. This study characterized CLS experiences and related social determinants of health among a nationally-representative community-dwelling sample of Black Americans aged >50 years from the National Survey of American Life (N=1,561, mean age: 62.4 years,

Cognitive Processing Speed Assessment Combined With Gait Performance Improves Prediction of Shunt Surgery Responsiveness in Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a reversible neurological disorder. Cerebrospinal fluid tap test (CSF TT) is widely used to predict shunt surgery responsiveness, but its predictive performance remains limited, partly because cognitive evaluation has received insufficient emphasis. METHODS: 72 patients diagnosed with possible iNPH were enrolled and underwent CSF TT. Gait performance was assessed using the 5-m timed up and go test (TUG) and the 10-m walking test. Cognitive processing speed was assessed using the trail making test Part A (TMT-A) and the Symbol Digi

Contributions of aging, auditory nerve health, and speed of processing to psychophysical gap detection thresholds in cochlear implant users.

Precise encoding of temporal speech cues is critical for speech understanding and are especially important for cochlear implant (CI) users, who receive limited spectral information. Silent gap detection is a simple index of auditory temporal precision, yet mechanisms and stimulus parameters driving variability in CI gap detection thresholds (GDTs) remain unclear. The overall aim of this study was to describe how AN density, aging, pulse rate, and cognitive speed of processing contribute to GDTs in adult CI users. Twenty post-lingually deafened adult Cochlear™ CI users (37-87 years) participate

The practice effect of smartphone-derived cognitive processing speed assessments as a proxy of cognitive functioning in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: In multiple sclerosis (MS), symbol digit modalities test (SDMT) scores are often influenced by practice effects. We evaluated the SDMT practice effect as a proxy of cognitive performance by relating it to disease severity and future performance. METHODS: People with MS (pwMS) and healthy controls (HCs) were evaluated at baseline and five-year follow-up. Practice effects were modeled using two-part piecewise linear regression on daily smartphone SDMT (sSDMT) scores. Cognitive impairment (CI) and preservation (CP) were defined relative to HC baseline sSDMT z-scores (CI: z < -1.67, C
