The effects of 10,000 steps on well-being, cognition and behaviour: A 14-day walking experiment.

Walking is widely accessible and targets such as the 10,000-step benchmark have become widely popularised. However, this target has received limited experimental testing for its psychological, cognitive and behavioural effects. Addressing this gap, we conducted a randomised, between-subjects, 14-day trial with university students (N = 195; nintervention = 90, ncontrol = 105) to examine the effects of adopting a daily 10,000-step walking goal on well-being, cognitive and goal pursuit outcomes. Participants in the intervention condition were instructed to walk 10,000 steps daily and received dai

The Association between Metacognitions and Worry: The Mediator Role of Experiential Avoidance Strategies.

Although experiential avoidance is emphasized as an underlying factor for persevering worry, limited empirical attempt exists to integrate this concept with cognitive models explaining pathological worry. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate the mediator role of different experiential avoidance strategies in the relationship between metacognitions and worry-related symptoms. The study was conducted with a community sample consisting of 563 volunteer participants (405 females, 158 males) whose ages ranged between 18 and 40 (M = 25.56, SD = 4.72). Online data collection of self-repor

Anorectal abscess.

A five year retrospective review of anorectal abscesses included 181 admissions in which all but five were explained by the anal glandular hypothesis of causation. Delays in treatment occurred because of misdiagnosis, attempts at nonoperative management and inhospital procrastination. These abscesses are notorious for the recurrence rate after treatment. One-third of the patients in our series had a history of previous abscess and a postoperative recurrence rate of at least 6 per cent. Associated medical problems, such as diabetes mellitus, inflammatory intestinal disease or carcinoma, should

A fifteen year experience with ectopic pregnancy.

The increasing importance of an ectopic pregnancy as a cause of maternal death presents a challenge that will be met when primary care physicians combine a high index of suspicion with the ability to recognize the patient most at risk. The major symptoms, abdominal pain, secondary amenorrhea and abnormal vaginal bleeding are well known, as are the major signs, abdominal tenderness, adnexal mass and tenderness on motion of the cervix. Less well known are factors in the clinical history which indicate the patient to be at high risk. These include primary or secondary infertility, previous aborti

Silent perforations of the stomach and duodenum by needles.

We present a series of ten patients consecutively admitted to the hospital after swallowing 12 household sewing needles. Ten of these needles, one in each patient, had perforated either the stomach or the duodenum, but in no case did the perforation cause any abdominal symptoms or signs. Immediately after arrival in the emergency ward, the diagnosis was made in most cases by means of a diatrizoate meglumine swallow, which showed the tip of the needle protruding outside the gastrointestinal tract. In the first few cases, the diagnosis was made by finding the needle in the same position after re

Measuring barriers to home bowel cancer screening in rural Australia: Development and validation of a survey instrument.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and psychometrically validate an adapted version of the Barriers to Home Bowel Cancer screening Scale relevant to rural communities. METHODS: A combined scale assessing general and "rural-specific" barriers to bowel screening was developed and presented via a cross-sectional online survey to 526 screening-eligible Australians (78% rural). Participants rated the extent to which each barrier would deter them from participating in at-home bowel cancer screening. Exploratory factor analysis identified latent screening barriers among rural participants (n=416

Endless Scrolling: Predictors of Procrastinatory Short-Form Video Use and Its Effects on Stress and Sleep.

Unhealthy social media habits may foster procrastination, leading to negative psychological and behavioral outcomes. The rising prevalence of procrastinatory short-form video (SFV) use (e.g., on TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts) highlights the need to better understand how established predictors of problematic media use operate in this emerging media environment. To address this gap, this study investigated the motivational factors underlying procrastinatory SFV use and its relationship with user well-being. Using an online survey of college students (N = 549) from two U.S. universities

Impact of authoritarian leadership on knowledge hiding: the serial multiple mediation effects of hindrance stressors and job insecurity.

INTRODUCTION: In an increasingly knowledge driven economy, understanding how authoritarian leadership shapes employees' knowledge hiding is critical for sustaining organizational learning and adaptability. Drawing on the conservation of resources theory and the Job Demands Resources model, this study examines how authoritarian leadership influences employees' knowledge hiding behavior through hindrance stressors and job insecurity among employees in small and medium sized enterprises in China. More importantly, this study conceptualizes knowledge hiding as a four dimensional construct encompas

Chemical Reactions, Drowning Swimmers, Owner's Manuals: The Power of Metaphors in Couple Therapy.

Over many years of working with couples, I have found that certain metaphors-drawn from images, films, stories, jokes, song lyrics, research findings, or events in my life-can be especially effective and memorable in clarifying and normalizing the diverse experiences of distressed couples. By likening events in therapy to more familiar situations, I have been able to strengthen the therapeutic alliance in a setting that otherwise might seem foreign, distressing, and even threatening. More broadly, metaphors have enriched my therapeutic repertoire, enabling me to help couples experience each ot

The adaptability of career decision-making profiles.

The Career Decision-Making Profiles questionnaire (CDMP; Gati, Landman, Davidovitch, Asulin-Peretz, & Gadassi, 2010) uses a new model for characterizing the way individuals make decisions based on the simultaneous use of 11 dimensions. The present study investigated which pole of each dimension is more adaptive. Using the data of 383 young adults who were about to make a career choice, we assessed the individuals' decision status and the associations of the dimensions Emotional and Personality-related Career decision-making Difficulties (EPCD; Saka, Gati, & Kelly, 2008) and personality factors

Hemorrhoids: associated pathologic conditions in a family practice population.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhoidal disease is an affliction that in referral populations coexists with other significant anorectal diseases. Published texts recommend aggressive procedures to diagnose associated pathologic conditions and as an aid for planning the extirpation of these diseases. Procrastination in management is said to be characteristic of both patient and primary care physician. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether patients with hemorrhoids in the general population are truly at high risk for significant anorectal disease. METHODS: Charts of 173 patients with hemorrhoids

Infected prosthetic grafts.

An experience with 20 infected prosthetic grafts in a series of 652 prosthetic arterial reconstructions has been reviewed. There was 13 aortofemoral, one straight aortic, three femoropopliteal, one carotid subclavian, one axilloaxillary, and an axillocarotid graft. The most common site of infection was the groin. All patients had received preoperative and postoperative broad-spectrum antibiotic coverage, perhaps contributing to a high incidence of Gram-negative bacterial cultures. Early procrastination contributed to morbidity and mortality. Attempts at local wound management with drainage and

The Cognitive Cost of Repetitive Thinking: A Study on the Effects of Shifting and Updating on Rumination of Emotional Experiences.

The present study aimed to investigate the consequence of resource competition between post-emotional processing and concurrent cognitive tasks. Previous studies have shown that such a resource competition engenders both short-term (e.g., defeats in the execution of the working memory task) and long-term effects (e.g., procrastination or rumination following an emotional experience). We expected these effects to vary as a function of the different WM components involved (shifting, Study 1; updating, Study 2). In two studies, participants (Study 1: N = 48; Study 2: N = 42) were administered one

Ecological validity of trait emotion regulation strategy measures.

Research on emotion regulation (ER) strategies has often relied on trait self-report measures, where individuals retrospectively report their tendency to engage in a specific strategy. Although this method is convenient and useful in many clinical and research settings, it is subject to a number of response and memory biases and may not accurately reflect ER as it is naturalistically employed in daily life. We examined the ecological validity of 10 self-report measures of ER strategies (i.e., acceptance, behavioral avoidance, experiential avoidance, expressive suppression, procrastination, rea

Reported maladaptive decision-making in unipolar and bipolar depression and its change with treatment.

Mood disorder patients frequently experience difficulty making decisions and may make sub-optimal decisions with adverse life consequences. However, patients' styles for decision-making when ill and after treatment have received little study to date. We assessed healthy controls (HC, n = 69) and patients with major depressive disorder (MDD, n = 61) or bipolar disorder (BP, n = 26) in a current major depressive episode using the Melbourne Decision-making Questionnaire. A subset of participants was re-evaluated after completing six weeks of pharmacotherapy. HC demonstrated significantly greater
