Bereavement may trigger a variety of psychological reactions, including prolonged grief disorder (PGD), depression, and loneliness. This study aimed to explore the co-occurrence patterns of these symptoms among Chinese bereaved university students. Using latent class analysis (LCA), four distinct classes were identified: a high symptom class (22.2%), a predominantly grief class (21.9%), a moderate symptom with prominent anhedonia class (23.3%), and a low symptom class (32.6%). Individuals with poorer physical condition, rural residence, unexpected loss, or lack of opportunity to say goodbye we

BACKGROUND: In 2022, the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and an update of the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM 5 TR) were released for implementation worldwide and now include the new Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). The newest definition of PGD is based on robust clinical research from the Global North yet until now has not been tested for global applicability.
METHODS: The current study assesses the new PGD ICD-11 criteria in a large international sample of 1393 bereaved adults. The majority of the sample was included from the USΑ. Additionally, we con

The revisions DSM-5 and ICD-11 are attempting to describe psychopathological reactions to bereavement. The delineation between depressive disorder and normal bereavement-related depressed state lacks sufficient data to guide diagnostic development. In contrast, there is strong evidence for a diagnosis of prolonged grief that is distinguished from depression and involves marked impairment.

Deaths of relatives and peers in potentially traumatizing circumstances may lead to symptoms of prolonged grief (PG, e.g.,yearning, preoccupation) and posttraumatic stress (PTS, e.g., re-experiencing, hypervigilance). There is limited knowledge about how symptoms of PG and PTS co-occur following such events. The current study aimed to identify patterns of DSM-5-TR defined PG symptomatology and PTS in a sample of 213 youngsters, involved in a school bus accident killing seven peers 2 months earlier. Using latent class analysis, three groups were identified evidencing moderate endorsement of mos

Recent grief research suggests that the influential cognitive stress theory should be updated with evidence from cognitive neuroscience. Combining human and animal neuroscience with attachment theory, we propose that semantic knowledge of the everlasting nature of the attachment figure and episodic, autobiographical memories of the death are in conflict, perhaps explaining the duration of grieving and generating predictions about complications in prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Our gone-but-also-everlasting model emphasizes that grieving may be a form of learning, requiring time and experienti

Objective Complicated grief reactions follow some pregnancy outcomes, like miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death, infant death, selective reduction, or termination of pregnancy. Stigma can delay treatment and worsen outcomes. Screening tools such as the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale detect complicated grief poorly, and specific tools for prolonged or complicated grief after a reproductive loss are cumbersome. In this study, a five-item questionnaire to detect complicated grief after reproductive loss of any type was designed and preliminary validated. Methods A questionnaire patterned

This study reports on the findings from a 6-year follow-up of a randomized trial of the Family Bereavement Program (FBP) on the outcomes for spousally bereaved parents. Spousally bereaved parents (N = 131) participated in the trial in which they were randomly assigned to receive the FBP (N = 72) or literature control (N = 59). Parents were assessed at four time points: pretest, posttest, and 11-month and 6-year follow-up. They reported on mental health problems, grief, and parenting at all four time periods. At the 6-year follow-up, parents reported on additional measures of persistent complex

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed more than 4.5 million lives so far throughout the world. These sudden, unnatural, and unexpected deaths have led to complicated grief reactions as families did not get time to prepare for death. I describe the experience of my family in India during the disastrous second wave of the pandemic. The experience of many such families of COVID-19 casualties is like a horror story that will continue to scare them each day of their life. These families have already suffered a serious and long-lasting harm and are at greater risk of suffering from prolonged grief disor

Between 44% and 87% of active duty service members and veterans who deployed following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks know someone who was killed or seriously injured in combat. Considering the high frequency and known impact of traumatic loss, it is important to understand if and how traumatic loss may impede posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment progress in military personnel. Additionally, experiencing a traumatic loss elevates the risk of developing prolonged grief disorder (PGD), which is associated with higher levels of PTSD symptoms, more functional impairment, and m

Background: Posttraumatic responses (PTR, i.e. posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], complex PTSD, prolonged grief, depression, and anxiety) have not been examined following late-life captivity. Most of the captivity literature focuses on young prisoners of war and, to a lesser extent, on younger civilians. Objective: To assess PTR levels in older ex-captives and potential risk factors for elevated PTR following late-life captivity. Methods: We assessed 26 Jewish Israeli older adults (mean age = 82.11±7.23, from Kibbutzim [rural close-knit agricultural communities] in the Gaza envelope) who were

BACKGROUND: Loss of companion animals can result in various psychological reactions, including complicated grief, depression, anxiety, and insomnia. However, research on the prevalence of patients requiring clinical intervention is limited. Moreover, research examining the relationship between childhood trauma and psychological symptoms after pet loss is lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the rates of clinically significant psychological distress after pet loss and the impact of childhood trauma on adults who have experienced pet loss.
METHODS: An online survey was conducted

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a first-line, empirically supported intervention for anxiety disorders. CBT refers to a family of techniques that are designed to target maladaptive thoughts and behaviors that maintain anxiety over time. Several individual CBT protocols have been developed for individual presentations of anxiety. The article describes common and unique components of CBT interventions for the treatment of patients with anxiety and related disorders (i.e., panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic str

AIM: This study aimed to examine the impact of grief and depression on reduced productivity in and outside work among bereaved family members of individuals with cancer.
METHODS: We used the data from the J-HOPE-4 study, a nationwide cross-sectional survey involving the bereaved families of individuals with cancer in inpatient hospices and palliative care units across Japan. We evaluated the participants' level of grief on the Brief Grief Questionnaire, their level of depression on the Patient Health Questionnaire, and their level of productivity loss on the Work Productivity and Activity Imp

Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) is a persistent form of grief associated with substantial functional impairment. The PG-13-Revised (PG-13-R), aligned with DSM-5-TR criteria, has not been validated in French. This study evaluated its psychometric properties in bereaved adults (N = 1,066; ≥12 months post-loss; 30-day retest n = 270). Following translation, the PG-13-R demonstrated a unidimensional structure, excellent internal consistency (ω=.92), strong test-retest reliability (ρ=.815, p<.001), and expected associations with symptoms of pathological grief (TGI-SR), post-traumatic stress (PCL-5),

The death of a loved one is associated with an increased risk of developing severe mental health complications such as prolonged grief disorder (PGD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Research supports the efficacy of cognitive-behavioural therapies (CBT), delivered online or face-to-face, in treating post-loss mental health problems. However, evidence-based treatments for bereaved adults remain scarce within the Swedish healthcare system. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of grief-focused internet-delivered CBT (ICBT) for PGD in

BACKGROUND: Approximately 10% of the individuals experiencing the death of a loved one develop prolonged grief disorder (PGD) after bereavement. Family members of haematological cancer patients might be particularly burdened since their loss experience is preceded by a very strenuous time of disease and aggressive treatment. However, support needs of relatives of cancer patients often remain unmet, also after the death of the patient. Therapeutic possibilities are enhanced by providing easily available and accessible Internet-based therapies. This study will adapt and evaluate an Internet-base

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the long-term impact of the killing of a parent in childhood or adolescence during war on distress and disability in young adulthood. This study assessed current prevalence rates of mental disorders and levels of dysfunction among young adults who had lost their father due to war-related violence in childhood or adolescence.
METHODS: 179 bereaved young adults and 175 non-bereaved young adults were interviewed a decade after experiencing the war in Kosovo. Prevalence rates of Major Depressive Episode (MDE), anxiety, and substance use disorders, and current sui

BackgroundThe death of a spouse due to cancer is highly distressing. While most adapt, a significant minority may develop Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) or experience Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG). Palliative sedation, particularly Continuous Deep Sedation Until Death (CDSUD), is used to alleviate refractory suffering, yet its psychological impact on bereaved spouses remains unclear.AimsThis study examined whether exposure to CDSUD and alignment between end-of-life care and patient preferences influenced grief and PTG in bereaved spouses.MethodsA cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data
