Clinical Evaluation of Neck in Patients with Proprioceptive Cervicogenic Dizziness.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a functional connection between neck physical evaluations, dizziness discomfort and image findings among subjects diagnosed with proprioceptive cervical dizziness. METHODS: After exclusion of peripheral vestibular disorders, 20 subjects with proprioceptive cervical dizziness hypothesis were selected. A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used to quantify pain and vertigo. The active neck Range of Motion (ROM) and the Muscle Strength (MS) of the neck region were examined. The manipulation of vertebral bodies by the Maitland method and imaging scan were performed. RESULTS:

Effect of vision loss on plasticity of the head and neck proprioception.

AIM: To investigate whether head and neck proprioception and motor control could be compensatory enhanced by long-term vision loss or impairment. METHODS: Individuals who were blind, low vision or sighted were included in the study, which would undergo the head repositioning test (HRT). The constant error (CE), absolute error (AE), variable error (VE) and root mean square error (RMSE) of each subject were statistically analyzed. Data were analyzed using the SAS 9.4. Tukey-Kramer for one-way ANOVA was used for comparison of blind, low vision, and sighted subjects, as well as to compare subject

The Proprioceptive System Regulates Morphologic Restoration of Fractured Bones.

Successful fracture repair requires restoration of bone morphology and mechanical integrity. Recent evidence shows that fractured bones of neonatal mice undergo spontaneous realignment, dubbed "natural reduction." Here, we show that natural reduction is regulated by the proprioceptive system and improves with age. Comparison among mice of different ages revealed, surprisingly, that 3-month-old mice exhibited more rapid and effective natural reduction than newborns. Fractured bones of null mutants for transcription factor Runx3, lacking functional proprioceptors, failed to realign properly. Blo

The Change in Fingertip Contact Area as a Novel Proprioceptive Cue.

Humans, many animals, and certain robotic hands have deformable fingertip pads [1, 2]. Deformable pads have the advantage of conforming to the objects that are being touched, ensuring a stable grasp for a large range of forces and shapes. Pad deformations change with finger displacements during touch. Pushing a finger against an external surface typically provokes an increase of the gross contact area [3], potentially providing a relative motion cue, a situation comparable to looming in vision [4]. The rate of increase of the area of contact also depends on the compliance of the object [5]. Be

The cerebellum is not necessary for visually driven recalibration of hand proprioception.

Decades of research have implicated both cortical and subcortical areas, such as the cerebellum, as playing an important role in motor learning, and even more recently, in predicting the sensory consequences of movement. Still, it is unknown whether the cerebellum also plays a role in recalibrating sensory estimates of hand position following motor learning. To test this, we measured proprioceptive estimates of static hand position in 19 cerebellar patients with local ischemic lesions and 19 healthy controls, both before and after reach training with altered visual feedback of the hand. This a

Muscle weakness impairs the proprioceptive control of human standing.

The leg muscles have two distinct roles in human standing. They are a principle source of the sensory input used to detect body sway and they also produce the contractile force that corrects body sway. In this population study, we provide evidence for a link between these contractile and sensory functions of muscle. In subjects classified as having weak or strong leg muscles, we compared body sway with and without vision. Subjects (17) with weakness through prior-polio were compared with age-matched controls (34) and from 174 subjects aged 60-69, those classified weak (<15 Nm ankle dorsiflexio

Working conditions and dentists' attitude towards proprioceptive derivation.

Proprioceptive derivation (Pd), a new method of organising a dentist workstation as well as a working procedure, was introduced to Thailand. The aim of this study was to assess the working conditions and the attitude to Pd among experienced users. Questionnaires were distributed among 12 dentists. The results showed that all dentists chose to work in a sitting posture and mostly worked without breaks between patients. They spent less time on dental examination and crown and bridge therapy tasks. Solving problems in patients with physical limitations resulted in a low stress level. Seven dentis

Lacunar thalamic stroke with pure cerebellar and proprioceptive deficits.

Case reports of two patients with cerebellar ataxia and proprioceptive sensory loss are presented. MRI of the brain revealed lesions of the ventroposterior part of the thalamus. These patients illustrate clinically the anatomical independence of cerebellar and sensory pathways in the thalamus. We suggest that the ataxic deficit is caused by interruption of cerebellar outflow pathways in the thalamus and not secondary to sensory deafferentation.

Neuropsychiatric observations of proprioceptive sensitivity in motion sickness susceptibility.

The assessment of motion sickness susceptibility is still an unsolved problem, due in part to its unclear etiology. We studied 16 referred patients suffering from "idiopathic motion sickness" and 4 pilots suffering from motion airsickness. All clinical and neurological tests proved negative, including electroencephalograms, electronystagmograms, Doppler studies, and computerized tomography of the brain. Cervical spine X-rays and personality characteristics were assessed. Simultaneously, 35 asymptomatic pilots and pilot applicants were studied as controls. Both groups were exposed to cross-coup

Effect of adding proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation to conventional physiotherapy on scapular balance and shoulder proprioception in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis: a randomised controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) involves three-dimensional structural spinal changes, frequently accompanied by scapular dyskinesis (SD) and proprioceptive dysfunction. Although physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises effectively correct spinal alignment, their efficacy in addressing SD and associated sensorimotor deficits remains underexplored. This randomised controlled trial (RCT) will evaluate whether integrating upper limb proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) with conventional physical therapy yields synergistic improvements in scapular kinematics and

The proprioception illusion can simulate limb movement in persons with limb difference.

The proprioception illusion occurs when cutaneous vibrations are applied to a muscle tendon which triggers nerves to signal to the brain that the muscle is lengthening, and therefore the limb is moving. This phenomenon has been used in a wide range of studies. One potential use of the illusion is for sensory feedback for limb prostheses, but this has not been investigated using non-invasive methods. This is the first reported non-invasive test of the illusion with limb different participants. The responses of sixteen persons with upper arm differences (eight congenital and eight acquired) were

PALPABLE: enhanced bending stiffness and proprioception in soft actuators for laparoscopic palpation.

The assessment of tissue properties via direct palpation is essential for localizing abnormalities during surgery. However, Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) eliminates this tactile feedback, creating a critical sensory gap. To address this, the EU Horizon project PALPABLE is developing novel fiber-optic sensing modalities for stiffness assessment. Successful integration of this technology requires an articulation interface that balances high maneuverability with the structural stability necessary for deflection-free tissue palpation. We present a single-degree-of-freedom (DOF) soft silicone ac

Relearning Upper Limb Proprioception After Stroke Through Robotic Therapy: A Feasibility Analysis.

Background: Motor learning can occur through active reaching with the arm hidden from view, leading to improvements in somatosensory acuity and modulation of functional connectivity in sensorimotor and reward networks. In this proof-of-principle study, we assess if the same paradigm benefits stroke survivors using a compact end-effector robot with integrated gaming elements. Methods: Nine community-dwelling chronic hemiplegic stroke survivors with persistent somatosensory deficits participated in 15 training sessions, each lasting 1 h. Every session comprised a robotic-based joint approximatio
