Cefotetan, a novel 7 alpha-methoxy cephalosporin, was shown to be comparable to other third-generation cephalosporins when tested in vitro against 1063 Gram-negative clinical isolates of 11 species. Ninety per cent of all isolates of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Proteus rettgeri, Providencia stuartii, Serratia marcescens and Citrobacter freundii were inhibited by concentrations of cefotetan between 0.07 and 3.2 mg/l. The prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production by 194 nosocomial isolates of Enterobacteriacea recovered from 1995 to 1999 was investigated. The ESBL production was determined by the double-disk synergy test and was confirmed by the E-test ESBL strip. METHODS: Eleven methanol extracts from seven Cameroonian medicinal plants were tested for their antibacterial activity using broth micro-dilution method against 36 MDR bacterial strains including Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Providencia stuartii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.

A total of 35,360 Enterobacterales isolates were consecutively collected from 75 US medical centers in 2018-2022. Among these isolates, 2612 (7.4%) were categorized as multidrug-resistant (MDR).
