To evaluate the results of congenital cataract extraction and postoperative visual function, we retrospectively reviewed the records of 95 patients who underwent pars plana (plicata) lensectomy or aspiration surgery. More than half of the cases with complaints of chromatopsia had recent-onset retinal pathology. Erythropsia due to bright (sun-)light is a relatively common finding in aphakia and pseudophakia. OBJECTIVE: Children with aphakia tend to have decreasing hyperopia as they grow older. No large study of the long-term refractive changes in children with pseudophakia has been published, although myopic shifts of greater than 10 diopters (D) have been reported. The NMR relaxation data of tissue are the basis of an appropriate adjustment of NMR imaging parameters. The relaxation data of ocular tissues are presented, and the relaxation behaviour of the eye is discussed. NMR imaging of eyes with intraocular silicone and pseudophakia are shown. Up to the present time, neuritis of the optic nerve is not detectable by NMR tomography whereas intraocular melanoma are clearly distinguishable.

A 69-year-old patient presented to us with traumatic mydriasis with irregular pupil measuring 7 mm, with superior loss of iris tissue and large inferior peripheral iridotomy and pseudophakia. A 73-year-old white man with pseudophakia experienced repeated bouts of transient visual loss associated with erythropsia and colour desaturation. A diagnosis of atheromatous carotid vascular disease was considered, prompting carotid angiography, during which time the patient experienced transient aphasia. Subsequent examination during an episode of visual loss showed that a spontaneous anterior chamber haemorrhage was the cause of the visual complaints.

Dark adaptation before and after exposure to bright light was investigated in a total of 129 aphakic and phakic eyes. Aphakic patients whose vision had been corrected with spectacles, contact lenses and intraocular implants were compared with phakic controls. Eyes with implants compared favorably with other optical correction systems; the rapidity of dark adaptation, however, was delayed in pseudophakia after exposure to bright light.

The literature has been investigated on the prevalence of preexisting and complicating glaucoma in intraocular lens surgery. Few exact data are available. The problem of the management of preexisting primary or postoperative secondary glaucoma in pseudophakia is discussed, in particular the inevitable restrictions the intraocular lens imposes on medical therapy and eventual glaucoma surgery. Preexisting glaucoma should therefore be a relative contraindication to intraocular lens surgery.

Basing on clinical material of the authors, binocular vision of patients after cataract surgery with implanted intraocular lenses has been studied. Total number of 91 patients, age 34-81, was divided into 3 groups: with unilateral and bilateral pseudophakia and control group. Poorly and strongly dissociating tests were applied. PURPOSE: To study the effects of repeated intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF drug bevacizumab on the vitreoretinal interface (VRI).
METHODS: Patients undergoing intravitreal injection of bevacizumab were enrolled. Eyes with media haze, uveitis, high myopia, history of cataract surgery or laser capsulotomy in last 6 months and complicated pseudophakia were excluded. Long-term experience with transscleral cyclophotocoagulation in 500 patients suggests that this operation is the cyclodestructive procedure of choice. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Modern pediatric cataract surgical techniques combined with a greater understanding of the natural history of aphakia and pseudophakia have changed the approach to the surgery of pediatric cataracts.
RECENT FINDINGS: Advanced surgical techniques, new pharmacologic options and long-term refractive planning have improved surgical success.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence and risk factors for early postoperative hypotony after 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy with nonexpansile endotamponade.
METHODS: A retrospective study of consecutive patients who underwent 25-G pars plana vitrectomy. Hypotony was defined as an intraocular pressure of 5 mmHg or less after surgery and ocular hypertension as an intraocular pressure greater than 21 mmHg.

Implanting an intraocular lens in an eye with controlled open angle glaucoma or angle closure glaucoma does not adversely affect the eye's status. Furthermore, it is extremely rare for primary glaucoma to develop in an eye postimplantation. Secondary glaucoma is certainly more common, although its incidence is not substantially greater than that in nonimplanted eyes. Special considerations with respect to medical therapy and surgical treatment of secondary glaucoma in pseudophakia are discussed.
