Beak and feather dystrophy in wild sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita).

Three flocks of wild sulphur-crested cockatoos in southeastern Australia had a 10-20% prevalence of feather and beak deformities. In affected birds, the crest, tail, contour and down feathers were lost or reduced in length owing to a "pinching off" 0.5-1 cm above the skin. The underlying skin was discolored brown. Flight feathers appeared normal and could sustain flight. In mildly affected birds, only the crest and down feathers were involved. Histological examination of affected feathers showed necrosis of developing cells in their epidermal collars. The epidermis was moderately hyperplastic

Antemortem diagnostic tests for the detection of Aspergillus infection in birds: A systematic review.

Aspergillosis remains a common and life-threatening disease in captive and wild birds all over the world. The diagnosis is currently based on clinical signs or lesions, diagnostic imaging, and a variety of biological tests. This systematic review aimed to compare the accuracy of antemortem diagnostic tests for Aspergillus infection in birds. According to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and CAB until January 2024. The methodological quality was assessed with QUADAS 2 risk of bia

Identification of Campylobacter jejuni and Chlamydia psittaci from cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) using metagenomics.

BACKGROUND: In July 2015, the carcasses of 11 cockatiels were submitted for disease diagnosis to the Avian Disease Division of the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency of Korea. The cockatiels, which appeared dehydrated and underweight, had exhibited severe diarrhea and 22 % mortality over 2 weeks. Traditional diagnosis did not reveal the causes of these symptoms. METHODS: We conducted metagenomics analysis on intestines and livers from the dead cockatiels using Illumina high-throughput sequencing. To obtain more accurate and longer contigs, which are required for further genetic characterizati

Polyomavirus Infection in Two Young Parrots: Assessment of Viral Distribution in Organs and Affected Tissues.

Avian polyomavirus (APyV) is responsible for diseases in birds belonging to several avian orders, including Psittaciformes, Anseriformes, and other susceptible taxa. APyVs appear to be able to replicate in various organs of susceptible bird species. This study aimed to investigate (i) the distribution of APyV in the organs of two parrot chicks belonging to different species, Moluccan eclectus (Eclectus roratus) and blue-winged macaw (Primolius maracana), which died due to APyV infection and (ii) the lesions associated with the infection. By negative-staining electron microscopy, well-defined v

Molecular detection and genetic characterization of parrot bornavirus in captive psittacine birds in Thailand.

Parrot bornavirus (PaBV), the etiological agent of proventricular dilatation disease (PDD), poses a significant threat to captive psittacine birds worldwide. This study investigated the prevalence, genotype distribution, and phylogenetic characteristics of PaBV in captive psittacine birds in Thailand. A total of 231 birds from three families (Psittaculidae, Psittacidae, and Cacatuidae) were sampled across five regions in Thailand. Nested PCR targeting the nucleoprotein gene detected PaBV in 13.85% (n=38) of samples, with 81.58% of positive cases being asymptomatic, suggesting a potential carri

Investigations on a cryopreservation protocol for long-term storage of psittacine spermatozoa using cockatiel semen as an example.

The aim of the present study was the establishment of an effective protocol for cryopreservation of psittacine semen. Therefore, pooled semen samples of 30 cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) were diluted with modified Lake diluent (1:4), partitioned into four equal parts. Three portions were mixed with three cryoprotectants (dimethylacetamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, glycerol) in 4%, 8% and 12% final concentration, respectively, whereas the 4rth part served as control. Altogether, 96 incremental diluted semen samples were obtained for investigation. Each cryoprotective agent (CPA) in each final co

Vitamin A toxicosis in a lorikeet flock.

Vitamin A toxicosis has recently been recognized as a concern for granivorous birds such as cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) and nectarivorous birds such as lorikeets. Such birds have little exposure to performed vitamin A in their wild diet, relying on carotene conversion to supply their vitamin A needs. Multiple clinical problems arose in a lorikeet flock when excessive vitamin A supplementation was used.

Adverse drug reaction to metoclopramide hydrochloride in a macaw with proventricular dilatation syndrome.

A 4-year-old female blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna) with a history of chronic vomiting was treated with metoclopramide hydrochloride. After the second treatment, ataxia, torticollis, and opisthotonos became evident. These signs resolved with the administration of diphenhydramine hydrochloride. Despite supportive care, the bird died several days later. Histologic lesions were suggestive of proventricular dilatation syndrome.

Sarcocystis falcatula of opossums: transmission by cockroaches with fatal pulmonary disease in psittacine birds.

Old World psittacines experienced an acute fatal illness in outdoor breeding collections in South Florida. Toxoplasma-like organisms were found histologically in pulmonary capillaries and elsewhere. Because the organisms underwent schizogony and could not be transmitted to mice, we looked for a cause other than Toxoplasma gondii. An opossum was trapped on the premises of 1 facility and was found to be shedding sporocysts similar to Sarcocystis falcatula in its feces. Cockroaches were prevalent and suspected as transport hosts. Cockroaches that had ingested opossum feces and subsequently were f

Cryptosporidiosis in four cockatoos with psittacine beak and feather disease.

Cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in 4 cockatoos with psittacine beak and feather disease. Three of the birds had cryptosporidiosis confined to the epithelium covering the bursa of Fabricius. One bird had generalized parasitism of the small intestine, large intestine, and bursal epithelium. All of the birds had intermittent to protracted diarrhea before death. Presumably, acquired immunodeficiency from psittacine beak and feather disease promoted establishment of cryptosporidiosis and other secondary diseases including septicemia, peritonitis, chlamydiosis, and mycotic ventriculitis.

Histopathology and the detection of avian bornavirus in the nervous system of birds diagnosed with proventricular dilatation disease.

Avian bornavirus (ABV) is currently considered a probable etiologic agent of proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) of psittacines. We tested 24 stored avian brain samples, processed for histopathology and retained following their submission for necropsy or histopathology to the Schubot Exotic Bird Center diagnostic laboratory in 1992. Thirteen of these samples were from birds diagnosed at that time as suffering from PDD. The remaining 11 samples were diagnosed as suffering from diseases other than PDD. Immunohistochemistry was performed using an antiserum directed against the ABV nucleoprote

[Behavior dissorders in psittacines. 1. Symptoms and causes].

Psittacines embody in an ideal fashion the child-like characteristics that humans adore. Animal lovers are unable to resist their expressive eyes, brightly coloured plumage, tameness and mimicry of human speech. The desire of pet-owners to have a tame, speaking bird with a very strong bond to its owner is achieved through hand-rearing, but this results in psychoreactive behavioural abnormalities in these highly social birds due to abnormal fixation. The signs and causes of these behavioural abnormalities, also called cage neuroses, are explained. The complex of feather-plucking, feather-ingest

[Anesthesia in domestic animals (small mammals, psittacines and reptiles)].

The presentation of small animals and exotic pets (birds, reptiles) in veterinary practice is increasing. Physiological and ethological variations demand specific precautions in restraining/ anesthetizing these patients. In Psittacines hypoglycemia, hypoxia and hypothermia are typical side-effects. Long-acting recovery control in birds and reptiles is necessary.

[Allergic alveolitis due to inhalation of avian proteins (author's transl)].

Allergic alveolitis is the immunologic response of the alveolar wall and the interstitial spaces of lung to inhalation of different organic, antigenic substances. This paper presents the case of a 12 1/2-year old girl with a pulmonary disease caused by inhalation of protein contained in the excrement dust from budgerigars. In the paat few years several reports already described this disease in breeders of pigeons and budgerigars. During some years our patient had recurrent episodes of a subacute illness with severe cough, dysponea, cyanosis of lips, tachycardia, and weakness. Auscultation show

No host too tough: New records of Plasmodium huffi in competent avian hosts, including Brazilian vultures and falcons.

Plasmodium huffi was first described in toucans of Brazil and was mistakenly believed to be a species exclusive to the order Piciformes. However, subsequent molecular and morphological studies conducted in red-legged seriemas, along with the diverse range of lineages identified in Anseriformes, Charadriiformes, Cathartiformes, Columbiformes, Galliformes, Pelecaniformes, Struthioniformes, Psittaciformes, and Passeriformes, have revealed that this parasite is, in fact, a generalist. Here, we provide new molecular and morphological data on P. huffi infecting previously unreported avian hosts in B

Retrospective Evaluation of Clinical Signs and Gross Pathologic Findings in Birds Infected With Mycobacterium genavense.

Mycobacterium genavense is regarded as the primary cause of mycobacteriosis in passerine and psittacine birds kept in captivity. Mycobacterium genavense is a potential zoonotic pathogen; therefore, early antemortem detection in birds is needed. In humans, infections with M genavense are found predominantly in immunocompromised people. To investigate clinical signs and pathologic lesions and to determine the prevalence of coinfections in birds infected with M genavense, we reviewed records of 83 birds in which DNA from M genavense had been detected via real-time polymerase chain reaction. Experimental diet-induced atherosclerosis in Quaker parrots (Myiopsitta monachus).

Spontaneous atherosclerosis is common in psittaciformes, and clinical signs associated with flow-limiting stenosis are encountered in pet birds. Nevertheless, a psittacine model of atherosclerosis has not been developed for research investigations. Sixteen captive-bred Quaker parrots (Myiopsitta monachus) were used in this study. While 4 control birds were fed a maintenance diet, 12 other birds were fed an atherogenic diet composed of 1% cholesterol controlling for a calorie-to-protein ratio for periods ranging from 2 to 8 months. The birds were euthanized at the end of their respective food t

Percloacal Ovocentesis in the Treatment of Avian Egg Binding: Review of 20 Cases.

Egg binding is one of the most commonly diagnosed reproductive disorders in avian medicine. Often, egg binding is caused by multiple factors, including inappropriate diet and husbandry, reproductive tract pathology, and/or systemic disease. Treatment of egg binding can include medical management or egg removal either percloacal or through surgical means. Percloacal ovocentesis is a commonly described technique in avian practice. The aim of this study was to consider the signalment, success of facilitating egg removal, associated complications, and outcome when percloacal ovocentesis was perfor

Molecular Prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. among Companion Birds Kept in Pet Shops in Japan.

Cryptosporidium is the most common protozoan that can infect a wide range of animals, including mammals and birds. Avian Cryptosporidium spp. can cause enteric and respiratory diseases which can be fatal in birds and some species are zoonotic. Companion birds have the potential as reservoir due to their close contact with humans. Pet shops are the major source of companion birds. However, few reports are available regarding Cryptosporidium spp. infection among companion birds kept in pet shops. The present study reports the prevalence and molecular characteristics of Cryptosporidium spp. among

Developmental origins of mosaic evolution in the avian cranium.

Mosaic evolution, which results from multiple influences shaping morphological traits and can lead to the presence of a mixture of ancestral and derived characteristics, has been frequently invoked in describing evolutionary patterns in birds. Mosaicism implies the hierarchical organization of organismal traits into semiautonomous subsets, or modules, which reflect differential genetic and developmental origins. Here, we analyze mosaic evolution in the avian skull using high-dimensional 3D surface morphometric data across a broad phylogenetic sample encompassing nearly all extant families. We
