Nurses' Perspectives on Smoking Policies, Safety and Cessation Support in Psychiatric Wards: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

A high prevalence of smoking and low rates of smoking cessation interventions can be observed in psychiatric wards. A questionnaire-based, cross-sectional study was performed in five hospitals among 107 psychiatric ward nurses. The aim was to investigate nurses' views on patients' smoking practices and their influence on the safety of both the patients and medical personnel. In addition, we asked about the availability of smoking cessation support. Most of the respondents noticed the negative impacts of smoking on patients and medical personnel. Nearly a third of our respondents (29.0%) recall

Making a case for systematic integration of theory-based tobacco education into graduate psychiatric/mental health nursing curriculum.

Tobacco use and dependence is a serious public health issue that disproportionately affects the mentally ill client population. Mental health professionals, including psychiatric/mental health advanced practice nurses (PMHAPNs), are disinclined to integrate tobacco cessation interventions into their practice, due in part, to a general lack of tobacco-related knowledge (C. Essenmacher, C. Karvonen-Gutierrez, J. Lynch-Sauer, & S. A., Duffy, 2008; A. J. Molina, T. Fernandez, D. Fernandez, M. Delgado, S. de Abajo, & V. Martin, 2012; L. Sarna, L. L. Danao, S. Chan, S. Reflections by licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants on the violent behaviours of individuals receiving mental health care in an adult acute psychiatric ward: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Violence in adult acute psychiatric wards remains a significant occupational hazard for nursing staff, particularly Enrolled Nurses (equivalent to Licensed Practical Nurses) and nursing assistants who often provide direct patient care without specialized psychiatric training. Exposure to patient-perpetrated violence has serious emotional and professional consequences. This study explored and described the reflections of Licensed Practical Nurses and Nursing Assistants on the violent behaviours of individuals receiving mental health care in adult acute psychiatric wards. METHODS: A

Intramuscular pharmacological treatment and mechanical restraint duration in acute psychiatric settings: Implications for nursing practice - A retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical restraint is used in psychiatric settings despite international efforts to minimize restrictive practices. Intramuscular medication is routinely administered during the restraint episode as rapid tranquillization with the aim of achieving behavioral control and earlier removal, but evidence regarding its effect on restraint duration in psychiatric inpatient settings is lacking. AIM: To examine whether intramuscular pharmacological interventions are associated with restraint duration in acute psychiatric wards using standardized dosing. METHODS: Retrospective observatio

Workplace Violence as an Occupational Hazard in Psychiatric Nursing: Burnout, Quality of Life, and Turnover Intentions in Saudi Arabia.

Background/Objectives: Workplace violence (WPV) is a major occupational health hazard and psychosocial safety concern in psychiatric nursing, yet evidence integrating exposure, worker well-being, and workforce stability within a single theory-informed model remains limited in Saudi Arabia. This study examined associations between WPV and proximal occupational outcomes (burnout, job satisfaction, and absenteeism) and distal outcomes (quality of life [QoL] and turnover intentions) among psychiatric nurses and tested burnout as a statistical mediator of the WPV-turnover intentions association. The Relationship Between Demographic Variables and the Level of Job Satisfaction of Nurses Working in Psychiatric Teaching Hospitals in Baghdad.

BACKGROUND: The unpredictable behavior of mentally ill patients is likely to impact nurses, who are faced with managing and caring for disruptive behavior. There hasn't been much research on nurses' job satisfaction when caring for mentally ill patients, so the current study aims to determine whether demographic factors impact how satisfied nurses are with their jobs at mental hospitals in Baghdad, Iraq. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive correlational approach was used for the study's design. A modified version of the Mueller and McCloskey Satisfaction Scale (MMSS)1990 was sent to 230 regi

Preparing psychiatric nurses for mHealth adoption in mental healthcare: A qualitative study of stakeholders' pre-implementation reflections.

This study explored stakeholders' sense-making during the pre-implementation phase of a nationally scalable mHealth intervention in mental healthcare, using the SAFE app as a case example. A qualitative design was employed, which combined individual interviews and focus groups with key stakeholders involved in mental healthcare and digital health initiatives. The data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Four interrelated themes were generated. Navigating the Digital Jungle captured concerns about the proliferation of mental health apps and the lack of clea

Preliminary Evaluation of a Nurse-Led Mindfulness Program With Psychoeducation on Rumination in Psychiatric Daycare Clients With Depressive Symptoms.

PURPOSE: Mindfulness-based interventions may reduce depression and rumination; however, rumination can hinder engagement and increase dropout. The current study evaluated the preliminary efficacy of a nurse-led, mindfulness-based program incorporating psychoeducation on rumination, compared to usual psychiatric daycare alone. METHOD: A prospective, multicenter, non-randomized controlled trial was conducted with adults presenting depressive symptoms in daycare settings (intervention: n = 20; control: n = 17). Primary outcomes were rumination and dropout rates. RESULTS: No significant between-

Psychiatric nurse's perceptions of their interactions with people who hear voices: A qualitative systematic review and thematic analysis.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: There is no qualitative systematic review of nurses' perceptions of their interactions with people hearing voices. There are some studies exploring the interventions provided by community psychiatric nurses to people hearing voices; these give a sense of what interactions may contain. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO THE EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Nurses across both community and inpatient mental healthcare settings feel uncertain about how to interact with people hearing voices, sometimes feeling like they can do little to help. Their interactions are affected by the workplace

Empowering Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners to Expand Treatment Opportunities for Veterans With Opioid Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Few veterans with opioid use disorder receive effective treatment despite the Veterans Health Administration's efforts to expand treatment by offering buprenorphine, a medication to treat opioid use disorder (MOUD). An insufficient prescribing workforce contributes to the underutilization of buprenorphine; however, nurse practitioners (NPs) can now obtain a waiver to prescribe this medication. This quality improvement project aimed to expand the prescribing workforce by educating psychiatric mental health NPs (PMHNPs) working in an emergency setting at a Veterans Affairs Health Car
