BACKGROUND: Evidence from motor and visual studies suggests that the ability to generalize learning gains to untrained conditions decreases as the training progresses. This decrease in generalization was suggested to reflect a shift from higher to lower levels of neuronal representations of the task following prolonged training. In the auditory modality, however, the few studies that tested the influence of prolonging training on generalization ability showed no decrease and sometimes even an increase in generalization.
OBJECTIVE: To test the impact of extending training in a basic psychoacou

A dominant view holds that the outer and middle ear are the determining factors for the frequency dependence of mammalian hearing sensitivity, but this view has been challenged. In the ensuing debate, there has been a missing element regarding in what sense and to what degree the biophysics of the inner ear might contribute to this frequency dependence. Here, we show that a simple model of the inner ear based on fundamental physical principles, reproduces, alone, the experimentally observed frequency dependence of the hearing threshold. This provides direct cochlea modeling support of the poss

BACKGROUND: Sounds and acoustic stimuli can have an effect on human beings. In medical care, sounds are often used as parts of therapies, e. g., in different types of music therapies. Also, human speech greatly affects the mental status. Although calming sounds and music are widely established in the medical field, clear evidence for the effect of sounds in palliative care is scare, and data about effects of the human voice in general are still missing. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different voice stimuli on palliative patients.
METHODS: Two different voice stimu

In complex auditory scenes, perceiving a given target signal is often complicated by the presence of competing maskers. In addition to energetic masking (EM), which arises because of peripheral interferences between target and maskers at the cochlear level, informational masking (IM), which takes place at a more central level, is also responsible for the difficulties encountered in typical ecological auditory environments. While recent research has led to mixed results regarding a potential speech-perception-in-noise deficit in dyslexic children, most of them actually investigated EM situation

Tuning curves and amplitude-intensity functions on wave I and wave V of the auditory-evoked brain stem response and psychophysical tuning curves were obtained from human subjects (N = 5) with noise-induced temporary threshold shift (TTS). All tuning curves were measured with the same stimuli. Maskers were pure tones presented simultaneously with the signal which was a 3.6-kHz tone pip. TTS was produced by a narrow-band noise centered at 2.6 kHz and presented at 86 dB SPL for 8 h. The maximum mean TTS was 28 dB and occurred at 3.5 kHz. Although intersubject variability of TTS was small, individ

Somatic tinnitus is the ability to modulate the psychoacoustic features of tinnitus by somatic manoeuvres. The condition is still not fully understood and further identification of this subtype is essential, particularly for the purpose of establishing protocols for both its diagnosis and treatment. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of somatic tinnitus within a large UK cohort using a largely unselected sample. We believe this to be relatively unique in comparison to current literature on the topic. This was investigated by using a total of 608 participant assessments from a

In a large subgroup of dyslexic individuals (D-LDs), reading difficulties are part of a broader learning and language disability. Recent studies indicate that D-LDs perform poorly in many psychoacoustic tasks compared with individuals with normal reading ability. We found that D-LDs perform as well as normal readers in speech perception in noise and in a difficult tone comparison task. However, their performance did not improve when these same tasks were performed with a smaller stimulus set. In contrast to normal readers, they did not benefit from stimulus-specific repetitions, suggesting tha

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of contralateral acoustic stimuli on speech identification scores and to correlate this effect to contralateral suppression of evoked otoacoustic emission.
DESIGN: Ten normal-hearing children with good academic performance participated in the study. Speech identification scores were measured in quiet and with different ipsilateral signal to noise ratios in two conditions, with and without contralateral acoustic stimuli. Transient evoked otoacoustic emissions were recorded for 70 dB SPL clicks with and without contralateral acoustic stimuli.
RESULTS: Finding

After a right temporoparietal stroke, a left-handed man lost the ability to understand speech and environmental sounds but developed greater appreciation for music. The patient had preserved reading and writing but poor verbal comprehension. Slower speech, single syllable words, and minimal written cues greatly facilitated his verbal comprehension. On identifying environmental sounds, he made predominant acoustic errors. Although he failed to name melodies, he could match, describe, and sing them. The patient had normal hearing except for presbyacusis, right-ear dominance for phonemes, and nor

Using psychoacoustic tests and questionnaires, the aim of this study was to clinically test Widex Senso (WS) versus analogue hearing aids on 200 first-time wearers. Half of the participants were selected at random for fitting with the behind-the-ear model (WS C8) or the in-the-canal model (WS CX). On a group basis, WS was found to provide more benefit than a palette of 29 analogue, modern hearing aid models from 10 manufacturers. Only 3 of 100 subjects changed from WS to another hearing aid. On average, the abbreviated profile of hearing aid benefit (APHAB) (Cox & Alexander, 1995) demonstrated

This paper considers the factors of presbyacusis and age-related psychological changes in older adults in terms of their effects on the use or potential use of hearing aids as a means of improving aural communication. Data are presented on the prevalence of hearing impairment and the extent of hearing aid use in aging listeners. Four major classes of presbyacusis are described (sensory, neural, metabolic, and cochlear conduvtive) and a hearing aid prognosis is made for each type of disorder. It is shown that aging produces deficits in pure-tone thresholds, the speech reception threshold, and s

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine electric-acoustic masking in cochlear implant users with ipsilateral residual hearing and different electrode insertion depths and to investigate the influence on speech reception. The effects of different fitting strategies-meet, overlap, and a newly developed masking adjusted fitting (UNMASKfit)-on speech reception are compared. If electric-acoustic masking has a detrimental effect on speech reception, the individualized UNMASKfit map might be able to reduce masking and thereby enhance speech reception.
DESIGN: Fifteen experienced MED-EL Fl

The auditory temporal deficit hypothesis predicts that children with specific reading disability (RD) will exhibit a deficit in the perception of auditory temporal cues in nonspeech stimuli. Tasks assessing perception of auditory temporal and nontemporal cues were administered to children with (a) RD without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (RD/no-ADHD, n = 40), (b) ADHD alone (ADHD/no-RD, n = 33), (c) RD and ADHD (RD/ADHD, n = 36), and (d) no impairment (NI, n = 41). The presence of RD was associated with a specific deficit in detection of a tone onset time asynchrony, but no reductio

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the bandwidth or loudness of a contralateral stimulus is the most important factor in evoking suppression of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs). TEOAEs were measured in both ears of 10 women in quiet and in the presence of one of three contralateral noise bands; narrow band (NB), wide band (WB) and equalized (EQ), all centered at 2000 Hz. The NB (100 Hz bandwidth) and WB (2200 Hz bandwidth) noises were presented at 60 dB SPL. The SPL of the EQ (100 Hz bandwidth) noise was adjusted such that it was equal in loudness to the WB noise

Frequency resolution ability was measured using a psychoacoustical tuning curve (PTC) or a notch-noise technique in two population samples. The first sample incorporated 1764 subjects with various degrees of sensorineural hearing impairment and ranging in age from 17-80 years. The second sample included 240 subjects aged between 50 and 75 years, carefully balanced in terms of impairment and age to avoid confounding between these two variables. In both samples, frequency resolution ability declined with increasing hearing threshold level (HTL), as measured by either method. In a subsample teste

A recent paper (Greenwood, 1990) reviewed cochlear coordinates in several species in relation to empirical frequency-position functions (Greenwood, 1961b, 1974b), one of which well fits the Békésy-Skarstein human cochlear map (Békésy, 1960; Kringlebotn et al, 1979). This increased the independence of the human function from the psychoacoustic data originally used to construct it and encouraged a second assessment of the relations of similar psychoacoustically significant bandwidths to distance and position on the cochlear map. The companion paper (Greenwood, 1991, this issue), found that, amon

Research work on the adverse effects of noise on annoyance in adults is well documented in Western Europe, but there is a knowledge gap concerning this type of research in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), South-East Europe (SEE), and Newly Independent States (NIS). The objective of this review was to present findings and to propose future research directions for the studies on the effects of environmental noise on annoyance in adults conducted in these countries. After systematic search in accessible databases, scientific journals, conference proceedings, international and national reports in

APEX, an acronym for computer Application for Psycho-Electrical eXperiments, is a user friendly tool used to conduct psychophysical experiments and to investigate new speech coding algorithms with cochlear implant users. Most common psychophysical experiments can be easily programmed and all stimuli can be easily created without any knowledge of computer programing. The pulsatile stimuli are composed off-line using custom-made MATLAB (Registered trademark of The Mathworks, Inc., http://www.mathworks.com) functions and are stored on hard disk or CD ROM. These functions convert either a speech s
