Psychological impact of additional findings detected by genome-wide Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT): TRIDENT-2 study.

In the Netherlands, genome-wide non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is offered to all pregnant women as part of the nationwide TRIDENT-2 study. Findings other than trisomy 21, 18, or 13, which are called "additional findings", are reported only on request of the pregnant woman. This study examined: (1) women's pre-test perceptions and reasons to opt for additional findings and (2) women's experiences with- and the psychological impact of being informed about an additional finding. A questionnaire, consisting of the anxiety measure State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), distress measure Impact

Psychological outcomes and surgical decisions after genetic testing in women newly diagnosed with breast cancer with and without a family history.

In patients with early breast cancer, personal and tumour characteristics other than family history are increasingly used to prompt genetic testing to guide women's cancer management (treatment-focused genetic testing, 'TFGT'). Women without a known strong family history of breast and/or ovarian may be more vulnerable to psychological sequelae arising from TFGT. We compared the impact of TFGT in women with (FH+) and without (FH-) a strong family history on psychological adjustment and surgical decisions. Women aged <50 years with high-risk features were offered TFGT before definitive breast ca

Ecological, psychological, and cognitive components of reading difficulties: testing the component model of reading in fourth graders across 38 countries.

The authors tested the component model of reading (CMR) among 186,725 fourth grade students from 38 countries (45 regions) on five continents by analyzing the 2006 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study data using measures of ecological (country, family, school, teacher), psychological, and cognitive components. More than 91% of the differences in student difficulty occurred at the country (61%) and classroom (30%) levels (ecological), with less than 9% at the student level (cognitive and psychological). All three components were negatively associated with reading difficulties: cogni

Does noncredible reporting moderate the relationship of executive functioning ratings to executive functioning tests, psychological symptoms, or functional impairment in adults seeking assessment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder?

Studies show poor agreement between executive functioning (EF) rating scales and objective EF tests. However, few studies have considered how this relationship may be impacted by noncredible reporting on symptom validity tests. This may be especially relevant in the context of assessment of adults for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), where there is heavy reliance on EF rating scales, high rates of noncredible presentation, and notable external incentives (e.g., stimulant medication and academic accommodations). We examined the impact of overreporting on EF rating scales, as wel

Psychological Readiness Is Weakly Related to Physical Function Tests at Return to Sport for Men and Not at All for Women Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction and Rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: To assess the relationships between physical function tests of the operative limb and psychological readiness to return to sport (RTS) after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (return to sport after injury [ACL-RSI]) by sex. The secondary purpose was to quantify sex-specific differences in physical function test outcomes. METHODS: Patient records were retrospectively identified as cases who performed RTS physical function testing (strength, horizontal hops, vertical jumps, single-leg leg press, and drop landing knee excursion, etc.), and completed a 6-question ACL-RSI su

The association between psychological burden related to COVID-19 and addictive social media use: Testing the mediational role of anxious affect.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on the normalcy of life. Similarly, social media use (SMU) has increased exponentially. This study examined the association between individuals' perception of the psychological burden related to the pandemic and addictive SMU. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted between February and May 2021 in two national contexts, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates. Data were gathered from a sample of 1322 participants drawn from a university population who completed measures of psychological burden related to COVID-19, anxious aff

Does psychological testing help to predict the response to acupuncture or massage/relaxation therapy in patients presenting to a general neurology clinic with headache?

Patients with chronic headache were offered treatment by acupuncture or massage with relaxation instead of a change in their prescribed medication. They were randomly allocated to either treatment. There was a significant improvement in pain ratings with both treatment types. Specifically a greater effect was seen in migraine patients treated by massage with relaxation when compared to acupuncture. No psychological factors were found to predict response to either treatment. At the end of the study, 13% of patients were significantly more worried that there may be a more serious cause underlyin

The moderating role of parental cognitive perceptions in the link between children's cancer predisposition genetic testing results and parent psychological adjustment.

OBJECTIVE: Children with cancer increasingly undergo germline genetic testing to identify genetic predispositions and inform clinical care options. Parents of children with pathogenic/likely pathogenic (P/LP) germline results have reported more distress than parents of children with negative results. Little is known about modifiable risk and resilience factors for intervention, such as cognitive perceptions. This study examined the moderating effects of parents' cognitive perceptions on adjustment to their child's germline genetic test results. METHODS: Parents (N = 191) completed surveys rep

The impact of cancer expectations on psychological responses following a cancer signal detected result in asymptomatic multi-cancer detection (MCED) testing.

BACKGROUND: Multi-cancer detection (MCED) blood tests have the potential to screen for early-stage cancers. Understanding how people experience an MCED cancer signal result is vital prior to any future implementation. We explored experiences in a trial context. METHODS: A subset of 41 participants in the NHS-Galleri trial (NCT05611632), with a cancer signal detected result, were interviewed. We selected: 20 participants with cancer found (self-reported) and 21 without cancer (following tests). Transcripts were analysed thematically. RESULTS: Expectations of cancer played a pivotal role in em

Psychological distress in applicants for predictive DNA testing for autosomal dominant, heritable, late onset disorders. The Rotterdam/Leiden Genetics Workgroup.

In a comparative study on the effects of predictive DNA testing for late onset disorders, pre-test psychological distress was assessed in people at risk for Huntington's disease (HD, n = 41), cerebral haemorrhage (HCHWA-D, n = 9), breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC, n = 24), and polyposis coli (FAP, n = 45). Partners, if available, also participated in the study. Distress was measured with the subscales Intrusion and Avoidance of the Impact of Event Scale. People at risk for the neurodegenerative disorders reported more avoidance than those at risk for the cancer syndromes. People at risk for FAP

Physiological and psychological responses to acute stress: A meta-analysis of the 171 studies of Trier Social Stress Test including 8452 healthy adults.

Responses to psychosocial stress influence health outcomes and are therefore crucial for understanding disease risk. Although previous research has documented physiological and psychological stress responses, comparisons of effect sizes across these responses and their interrelationships remain underexplored. In this meta-analysis, we systematically examined 171 studies employing the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) involving 8452 healthy adults. Three-level meta-analysis (TLMA) with moderator analyses showed physiological responses (effect sizes ES = 1.25, 95 CI [1.13, 1.38], Hedges' g) to be

A Positive Psychology Intervention for Caregivers of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Survivors (PATH-C): Initial Testing and Single-Arm Pilot Trial.

Caregivers of patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) play a crucial role in supporting their loved ones through physical, emotional, and practical challenges. This role has been associated with high levels of psychological distress and low levels of positive psychological well-being (PPWB). Positive psychology interventions for caregivers in other disease groups (eg, breast cancer) have been associated with improved outcomes. However, positive psychology interventions that specifically address HSCT caregivers' psychological n

Projected Retained Ability Score (PRAS): A New Methodology for Quantifying Absolute Change in Norm-Based Psychological Test Scores Over Time.

A limitation of norm-based ability test scores is that they can only be used to evaluate relative change (compared with change in the norm sample), as opposed to absolute (raw) change in performance from Time 1 to Time 2. To address this limitation, a novel method (Projected Retained Ability Score [PRAS]) was developed to characterize absolute change in norm-based ability test scores. The PRAS method was applied to Differential Ability Scales®-Second Edition (DAS-II) General Conceptual Ability (GCA) scores in three cases of children with the neurodegenerative condition mucopolysaccharidosis ty

A Structural Equation Model of Impulsivity, Psychological Resilience, and Internet Gaming Disorder: Testing Direct and Indirect Pathways Among Saudi University Students.

BACKGROUND: Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) is a growing mental health concern among university students, often linked to impulsivity and low resilience. However, traditional regression-based research often fails to evaluate latent measurement structures or simultaneously test indirect pathways within a single analytic framework. This study applied structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the direct and indirect associations between impulsivity, resilience, and IGD symptom severity among Saudi university students, evaluating resilience as a potential mediator and testing measurement equiva
