The management and expression of pride: Age and gender effects across adolescence.

Understanding of the role that positive emotions play in adolescent social development requires studying the normative development of these emotions. This research examined pride expression and management across adolescence, focusing on gender and developmental differences. Participants were 206 Caucasian youth (52.9% girls) in grades 5 (Mage = 11.10 years), 8 (Mage = 14.45), 11 (Mage = 17.26), and university (Mage = 19.61). Youth responded to two vignettes assessing reactions to pride-eliciting situations. Compared to boys, girls reported more intense pride experience and a higher likelihood

Early trauma and psychotic experiences in autism: a neurodevelopmental framework integrating allostatic overload, symbolisation, and stress reactivity.

Adverse childhood experiences are common worldwide and are associated with enduring mental and physical health consequences. Autism, a complex and heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition shaped by both genetic and environmental influences, has a global prevalence of approximately 1% and is associated with increased exposure to adversity, including bullying, social exclusion, and interpersonal misattunement. Such exposures may partially mediate associations between autistic traits and later psychotic experiences independently of genetic liability. Developmental trauma is increasingly recogni

Neuroendocrine basis of affective behavior: what we can learn from differences in sex development (DSD).

Steroid hormones influence affective behavior and its underlying neural networks. However, distinguishing between organizational and activational hormonal effects, along with effects of socialization, remains challenging, limiting the understanding of the mechanisms underlying affective neurobehavioral differences. Individuals with differences in sex development (DSD), such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS), offer a unique opportunity to examine how alterations in prenatal steroid hormone exposure have a role in shaping brain developmen

A Network Approach to Developmental Differences and Disorders.

Child and adolescent development is influenced by complex interplay between a range of diverse factors. The network approach is gaining popularity as a way of modelling such complex processes. Here we used the network approach to investigate whether developmental differences and disorders can be conceptualised as arising from interactions between characteristics and symptoms. We used data from four population-based birth cohorts in England (n = 47,315), those born in the 1970s, 1990s and 2000s, to investigate interrelations between areas of psychological functioning that underpin learning and

Understanding psychological flourishing across the lifespan: an integrative review of theory and evidence.

Psychological flourishing is increasingly recognised as a multidimensional construct within contemporary positive psychology. It extends beyond the mere absence of psychopathology to encompass the active presence of positive functioning across emotional, cognitive, social, and existential dimensions. Despite decades of theoretical development and empirical investigation, a coherent integrative account of how flourishing unfolds, varies, and can be cultivated across the entire human lifespan remains elusive. This integrative review synthesizes theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence perta

Progress in Nurturing Human Well-Being.

Substantial evidence in the behavioral and social sciences has accrued in support of numerous intervention programs and policies bearing on improving the lives of children and families. To this end, Clinical Child and Family Psychology Review features a special journal issue on "Evolving Toward a More Nurturing Society." The field has achieved numerous advances regarding how to create and promote nurturing environments that foster successful development and prevent psychological and behavioral problems in children and youth. Such advances cut across multiple strategies (e.g., programs and inte

Relational aggression and hostile attribution biases: testing multiple statistical methods and models.

The present study used both categorical and dimensional approaches to test the association between relational and physical aggression and hostile intent attributions for both relational and instrumental provocation situations using the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development longitudinal Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (M = 8.3 years-old, SD = 0.19, N = 840). A one standard deviation threshold was used to create categorical aggression status groups. In categorical analyses, children who were both relationally and physically aggressive were found to attribute mo

Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies of language.

Functional neuroimaging of language builds on almost 150 years of study in neurology, psychology, linguistics, anatomy, and physiology. In recent years, there has been an explosion of research using functional imaging technology, especially positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), to understand the relationship between brain mechanisms and language processing. These methods combine high-resolution anatomic images with measures of language-specific brain activity to reveal neural correlates of language processing. This article reviews some of what has

They made you perfect: A test of the Social Reaction Model of Perfectionism.

Perfectionism serves as a mediator in the relationship between difficult life experiences and psychological distress, but to date no research has examined the effect of recalled peer victimization on perfectionism and adult depressive symptomatology (DS). The present study assessed the Social Reaction Model of Perfectionism (SRMP; Flett, Hewitt, Oliver, & Macdonald (2002b). Perfectionism in children and their parents: A developmental analysis. In G. L. Flett and P. L. Hewitt (Eds.), Perfectionism: Theory, research, and treatment (pp. 89-132). Washington: American Psychological Association), wh

The reciprocal relationships between positive youth development and psychological distress in adolescents: the moderating role of gender and stress mindsets.

Although previous studies have suggested a reciprocal relationship between Positive Youth Development (PYD) and adolescent psychological distress, the distinction between within-person dynamics and between-person differences remains unexamined. Given the gender differences in adolescents' PYD and psychological distress, we examined gender as a moderator to test for gender-specific developmental dynamics. Additionally, early adolescence is filled with developmental challenges; therefore, we examined stress mindsets as moderators to clarify how cognitive appraisals of these challenges shape thes

Exploring sexual and romantic functioning as early risk factors of schizophrenia: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia frequently encounter challenges related to sexuality and intimacy; however, the underlying causes of these difficulties remain unknown and unexplored. AIM: This narrative review aims to explore how the biological/hormonal and psychological/behavioral developmental trajectories in schizophrenia patients deviate from the normal course and to examine their connection to difficulties in sexual and romantic functioning. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar, with key terms related to schizophrenia and sexua

[Xenophobia and experienced abandonment--a depth-hermeneutic analysis of a single case].

A single case study is presented from a feasibility study on social, psychic and neurobiological causes of violence in adolescence focusing on right-wing extremist and xenophobic youth. Results from psychological assessments and a structured biografical reconstruction are analyzed. The case illustrates a typical developmental path of a right-wing, xenophobic and violent male adolescent who experienced early and repeated exclusion and social marginalization. Results from psychological testing demonstrated additional developmental risk factors, such as disorganized attachment representations and

Childhood maltreatment experiences and problematic sexual outcomes in adult males who have sexually offended: Further evidence of the potency of male caregiver psychological abuse.

BACKGROUND: Although research on the developmental antecedents of sexual offending has tended to focus on sexual abuse, recent research in juveniles and adults who have sexually offended suggests that psychological abuse perpetrated by a male caregiver may be a particularly important factor in the development of problematic sexual interests and behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to extend previous findings by investigating the association between psychological abuse by a male caregiver and problematic sexual outcomes in a sample of adult males who had sexually offended. PARTICIPANTS: Par

Prenatal exposure to air pollution and childhood internalizing problems: roles of shyness and anterior cingulate cortex activity.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to air pollution increases the risk for psychiatric disorders characterized by internalizing problems. In this study, we examined the roles of shyness and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) activity in the association between prenatal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and children's internalizing problems at 7-9 years old. METHODS: Participants include 53 children (31 girls, 22 boys). Personal air monitoring was conducted over 48 continuous hours during the third trimester of pregnancy to measure 8 PAHs. Mothers reported children's shyness (Emotiona

Preliminary findings on the association between attachment patterns and levels of growth hormone in a sample of children with non-organic failure to thrive.

INTRODUCTION: Deficiency of growth hormone (GH) in absence of pituitary injuries is one of the causes of short stature and of the non organic failure to thrive (NOFTT) condition. Advances in developmental psychology have highlighted the role of emotions and caregiving behaviors in the organization of child’s personality and psychobiology, with the mother-son attachment bond being considered a fundamental developmental experience. The objective of the present preliminary study was to assess whether there are significant correlations between attachment patterns and GH levels in a sample of subje

Cognitive and behavioural status of paediatric patients 1 year after cardiac or cardiopulmonary transplantation.

Cardiac and cardiopulmonary transplantation are being increasingly used as methods of treatment for children with end-stage heart or lung disease, but little is documented about their psychological adjustment to such procedures. In all, 45 children who had undergone heart or heart-lung transplantation were studied 1 year after operation and compared with 39 children who had undergone bone marrow transplantation, 49 children who had undergone conventional cardiac surgery and 46 normal healthy children. None of the 3 treatment groups differed significantly with respect to developmental, cognitiv

Millennials and the World of Work: Experiences in Paid Work During Adolescence.

PURPOSE: This article considers some important questions faced by youth as they enter and adapt to paid work. We focus on two key questions: (1) how many hours should teenagers work during the school year and (2) what available jobs are desirable? DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: To help answer these questions, we review studies that have examined the effects of early work experiences on academic achievement, positive youth development, and health-risk behaviors. We also draw upon nationally representative data from the Monitoring the Future (MTF) study to illustrate some new findings on youth emp

Lorazepam, fluoxetine and packing therapy in an adolescent with pervasive developmental disorder and catatonia.

Packing therapy is an adjunct symptomatic treatment used for autism and/or catatonia. Here, we report the case of a 15-year-old boy with pervasive developmental disorder who developed catatonia. At admission, catatonic symptoms were severe and the patient required a feeding tube. Lorazepam up to 15 mg/day moderately improved the catatonic symptoms. On day 36 we added fluoxetine and on day 62 we added packing therapy (twice per week, 10 sessions). After three packing sessions, the patient showed a significant clinical improvement (P<0.001). At discharge (day 96), he was able to return to his sp
