Bleuler revisited: psychomotor slowing in schizophrenia as part of a catatonic symptom cluster.

In schizophrenia, psychomotor slowing and stereotypy are poorly delineated from cognitive deficits like diminished processing speed. Inpatients' performance outcomes on a line-copying task, a task assessing stereotypy and a processing-speed task are compared. Results suggested that psychomotor slowing and stereotypy are related and may represent a catatonic symptom cluster.

Oxazepam does not modulate the behavioral effects of d-amphetamine in humans.

Benzodiazepines, which are gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA(A)) receptor positive modulators, can block the behavioral effects of psychomotor stimulants. In the present study, the ability of oxazepam, which may have less abuse potential compared to some other benzodiazepines, to attenuate the discriminative-stimulus, subject-rated and psychomotor performance effects of d-amphetamine in humans was determined. Six healthy participants (2 female, 4 male) learned to discriminate 15 mg oral d-amphetamine. After acquiring the discrimination (i.e., > or = 80% correct responding on 4 consecutive days),

Growth variables and obstetrical risk factors in newborns are associated with psychomotor development at preschool age.

BACKGROUND: Low birthweight resulting from preterm birth or fetal growth restriction is associated with poor neurocognitive development and child psychopathology affecting school performance and educational success. Prediction of developmental performance may therefore serve as a basis for early intervention strategies to improve educational success and mental health of our children in a timely manner. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the predictive capacity of morphometric variables taken at birth and that of obstetrical risk factors to predict developmental performance at 4.3 (standar

Subjective sleep quality as a mediator in the relationship between pain severity and sustained attention performance in patients with fibromyalgia.

Pain severity and sleep are associated with cognitive performance in patients with fibromyalgia. This study examined whether sleep mediates the relationships of pain severity with psychomotor vigilance and attention in patients with fibromyalgia by analysing 80 patients with fibromyalgia. Cognitive performance, pain severity and sleep parameters were determined using the Psychomotor Vigilance Task, Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form and sleep diaries of seven consecutive nights, respectively. The patients' demographic data were analysed for potential confounding factors. After adjustment for thes

Acute pharmacological effects of temazepam, diphenhydramine, and valerian in healthy elderly subjects.

Elderly insomniacs are often treated pharmacologically with benzodiazepines, antihistamines, or natural products. A double-blind, randomized, crossover, placebo-controlled study was performed to assess the comparative pharmacodynamics of single doses of temazepam (15 and 30 mg), diphenhydramine (50 and 75 mg), and valerian (400 and 800 mg) in 14 healthy elderly volunteers (mean age, 71.6 years; range, 65-89). Assessments were made at 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 hours postdosing with use of validated measures of subjective sedation and mood (visual analogue scales, Tufts University Benzodiazep

Effect of chronic cocaine use on fine motor coordination tested during ophthalmic vitreoretinal simulated performance.

We conducted a case-control study using the Eyesi simulator to assess the surgical performance of 24 chronic cocaine users (CCUs) and 24 sex-/age-matched controls to numerically quantify ophthalmic microsurgical simulator performance and fine motor deficiencies. The inclusion criteria were no exposure to illicit drugs other than cocaine, marijuana, or alcohol within the previous month and no health conditions that could impact manual task performance. The outcomes included surgical scores (0-100, worst-best) and task completion time (minutes). Fisher's exact test, analysis of variance, Mann-Wh

Influence of team task outcomes on individuals' responses to their own errors.

In team sports, the consequences of an individual's action are often decoupled from the team task outcome because teammates can compensate for individual errors. Here, we asked whether in such cooperative contexts, an individual's learning response to their own error is modulated by team outcome, even when their actions do not directly determine that outcome. We developed a joystick-based cooperative motor task that mimics a final pass and shot in soccer, performed by pairs of human participants (passer and shooter). In error-clamp trials, where the movements of both players did not influence

Evaluating possible 'next day' impairment in insomnia patients administered an oral medicinal cannabis product by night: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

Cannabis and its major constituents, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), are being widely used to treat sleep disturbances. However, THC can cause acute cognitive and psychomotor impairment and there are concerns that driving and workplace safety might be compromised the day after evening use. Here, we examined possible 'next day' impairment following evening administration of a typical medicinal cannabis oil in adults with insomnia disorder, compared to matched placebo. This paper describes the secondary outcomes of a larger study investigating the effects of THC/CBD on insom

Psychomotor and non-motor correlates of cognition in spinocerebellar ataxias Types 1, 2, 3, and 6.

There is growing evidence of cognitive deficits in spinocerebellar ataxias, with the Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome Scale (CCAS-S) an increasingly common measure of this dysfunction. There remain ongoing questions as to how Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome Scale performance relates to day-to-day cognitive function, non-motor and motor features of spinocerebellar ataxias and demographic factors. Via an online study, we evaluated Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome Scale performance amongst individuals with spinocerebellar ataxia Type 1 (n = 14), Type 2 (n = 16), Type 3 (n =

Cognitive performance in methadone maintenance patients: effects of time relative to dosing and maintenance dose level.

Given the long-term nature of methadone maintenance treatment, it is important to assess the extent of cognitive side effects. This study investigated cognitive and psychomotor performance in 51 methadone maintenance patients (MMP) as a function of time since last methadone dose and maintenance dose level. MMP maintained on doses ranging from 40 to 200 mg (mean = 97 mg) completed a battery of psychomotor and cognitive measures across 2 sessions, during peak and trough states, in a double-blind crossover design. Peak sessions were associated with worse performance on measures of sensory process

Neurobiological substrates of processing speed in childhood epilepsy.

This study investigated the association between processing speed and cortical morphometry in children with idiopathic epilepsies (n = 81) versus healthy controls (n = 57), age 8-18. Participants underwent 1.5 T MRI scanning and cognitive testing including assessment of psychomotor speed (Digit Symbol) at or near the time of epilepsy diagnosis. Vertex analyses of cortical volume, thickness, surface area, and local gyrification index (LGI), as well as volume-based analyses of subcortical structures and cerebellum, were used to determine the morphometric correlates of Digit Symbol performance. The interaction between alcohol and the residual effects of thiopental anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: During ambulatory surgery, barbiturates, such as thiopental, may impair psychomotor performance several hours after administration. It was hypothesized that if patients drink alcohol 4 h after thiopental injection, the increase in psychomotor impairment would be greater than that seen after alcohol ingestion alone. METHODS: Twelve healthy men volunteered to participate in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study with a Latin square design. On each testing day, the subjects received intravenous injections of either 5 mg/kg of 2.5% thiopental or an equal volume of saline

Speech as an objective measure of psychomotor dysfunction in major depressive disorder: validation from non-speech motor measures.

Psychomotor dysfunction, which can manifest as slowing (psychomotor retardation; PmR) and jerkiness or restlessness (psychomotor agitation; PmA) often occurs in individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD). As psychomotor dysfunction predicts a worse treatment response, accurately measuring and tracking PmR and PmA may improve outcomes. Traditionally, psychomotor dysfunction has been assessed using self-report or observer-based methods, which are often insensitive to subtle but potentially relevant movement abnormalities. Instrumental probes often require specialized equipment. Speech pres

Cognitive and motor functional activity in non-demented community-dwelling essential tremor cases.

BACKGROUND: Many investigators have observed mild cognitive deficits in essential tremor (ET), yet the functional significance of these deficits is unclear. Also, there are very few data in which functional activity in ET has been divided into cognitively based activities (remembering appointments) versus motor-based activities (writing cheques). OBJECTIVE: The authors (1) compared functional level in ET cases versus controls, assessing functional activities that are cognitively based and those that are dependent upon both motor and cognitive factors, and (2) determined whether lower mini men

Conservation of a lateralized visuomotor axis in hawkmoth proboscis probing.

Lateralization of behavior, including motor control and sensory processing, is widespread across bilaterians. In visually guided tasks it often manifests as an axis aligning eye, appendage, and a target within a shared reference frame, such as eye-hand coordination in humans or eye-beak coordination in birds. While studied intensively in a few vertebrate systems, whether similar control principles apply to invertebrates, and more generally, how sensory and motor lateralization are linked mechanistically, remains unclear. Using the proboscis inspection behavior of hummingbird hawkmoth Macroglos

Visual search strategies of performance monitoring used in action anticipation of basketball players.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous studies have found that expert players anticipate better than novices. If more accurate prediction represents performance monitoring of experts, what are the advantages of elite basketball players in identifying and processing available cues? There is still a lack of sufficient evidence. This study examined the visual search in basketball players and explored the performance monitoring of action anticipation, adopting an expert-novice paradigm and eye-movement technology. METHODS: Forty basketball players were recruited in this study: 20 in the expert group and 20 in th
