Clinical vision and molecular loss: Integrating visual psychophysics with molecular genetics reveals key details of normal and abnormal visual processing.

Over the past two decades we have developed techniques and models to investigate the ways in which known molecular defects affect visual performance. Because molecular defects in retinal signalling invariably alter the speed of visual processing, our strategy has been to measure the resulting changes in flicker sensitivity. Flicker measurements provide not only straightforward clinical assessments of visual performance but also reveal fundamental details about the functioning of both abnormal and normal visual systems. Here, we bring together our past measurements of patients with pathogenic v

The development of meridional anisotropies in neurotypical children with and without astigmatism: Electrophysiological and psychophysical findings.

It is important to understand the development of meridional anisotropies in neurotypical children since those with poor visual development, such as amblyopia, can have different patterns of meridional anisotropies. While the oblique effect is usually observed in adults, neurotypical children who have normal 20/20 visual acuity tend to demonstrate a horizontal effect electrophysiologically. In this longitudinal study, orientation-specific visual evoked potentials (osVEPs) and psychophysical grating acuity were used to investigate the changes in the meridional anisotropies in children aged 3.8 t

Psychophysical assessment of pain in adults with moderate and severe haemophilia: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Joint pain is the hallmark of haemophilia; therefore it seems clinically rather a musculoskeletal than a bleeding disorder. Although joint pain in people with haemophilia (PwH) is a complex and multidimensional problem, pain assessment remains primarily focused on the structural evaluation of their joints. Whereas, only few data are available on the potential implication of psychophysical and psychological factors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to perform a psychophysical pain assessment including quantitative sensory testing (QST) and an evaluation of psychological factors in a lar

Postural Control and Psychophysical State Following of Flight Simulator Session in Novice Pilots.

Flight simulators can cause side effects usually called simulator sickness. Scientific research proves that postural instability can be an indicator of the occurrence of simulator sickness symptoms. This study aims to assess changes of postural control and psychophysical state in novice pilots following 2-h exposure to simulator conditions. The postural sway was quantified based on variables describing the displacement of the Center of Pressure (COP) generated in a quiet stance with eyes open (EO) and closed (EC). The psychophysical state was assessed using the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire

Canonical Grading Scales of Corneal and Conjunctival Staining Based on Psychophysical and Physical Attributes.

PURPOSE: In this study, we apply psychophysical scaling principles based on physical (photometric) attributes of images to better understand the factors involved in clinician judgement of ocular surface staining and, using that knowledge, to develop photographic scales for the assessment of staining for dry eye (DE) and related conditions. METHODS: Subjects with noninfectious ocular surface staining were enrolled at five clinical sites. Following instillation of fluorescein, photographs of corneal staining were taken every 30 seconds for at least 5 minutes. The same procedure was followed for

Psychophysical testing in chronic migraine and chronic tension type headache: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical presentation is the key to the diagnosis of patients with migraine and tension-type headache, but features may overlap when both become chronic. Psychophysical parameters may distinguish both conditions. We aimed to compare psychophysical aspects of patients with chronic migraine, chronic tension-type headache and headache-free controls, and to determine whether these can predict headache frequency. METHODS: An examiner blinded to the diagnosis assessed 100 participants (chronic migraine (n = 38), chronic tension-type headache (n = 31) and controls (n = 31)). Assessed var

Psychophysical predictors of experimental muscle pain intensity following fatiguing calf exercise.

Musculoskeletal pain affects approximately 20% of the population worldwide and represents one of the leading causes of global disability. As yet, precise mechanisms underlying the development of musculoskeletal pain and transition to chronicity remain unclear, though individual factors such as sleep quality, physical activity, affective state, pain catastrophizing and psychophysical pain sensitivity have all been suggested to be involved. This study aimed to investigate whether factors at baseline could predict musculoskeletal pain intensity to an experimental delayed onset of muscle soreness

Prevalence and reversibility of smell dysfunction measured psychophysically in a cohort of COVID-19 patients.

BACKGROUND: Considerable evidence suggests that smell dysfunction is common in coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). Unfortunately, extant data on prevalence and reversibility over time are highly variable, coming mainly from self-report surveys prone to multiple biases. Thus, validated psychophysical olfactory testing is sorely needed to establish such parameters. METHODS: One hundred severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)-positive patients were administered the 40-item University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT) in the hospital near the end of the acute

The subjective visual vertical in patients with pusher behaviour: a pilot study with a psychophysical approach.

Pusher behaviour (PB) reflects some misrepresentation of verticality. However, its neural mechanisms are still unclear. The aim of this pilot study is to assess the perception of the subjective visual vertical in patients with PB using an orientation discrimination task relying on a psychophysical forced-choice procedure. A sample of eight patients with post-stroke hemiplegia, three of whom with (PB+ group) and five without (PB- group) a clear PB, and 10 matched healthy subjects, was selected. All participants were assessed with an orientation discrimination task based on the objective Two-Alt

Understanding and diagnosing sexual dysfunction: recent progress through psychophysiological and psychophysical methods.

The psychophysiological method has been applied to the study of human sexual response for well over three decades. The value of this method in providing an objective, integrated approach to the understanding of sexual response, and more specifically sexual dysfunction, is presented. Selected results from recent studies using this methodology illustrate the complex relationships that emerge among cognitive, affective, and physiological components of the sexual response. In addition, data from a systematic study of the use of psychophysiological procedures as an aid in differential diagnosis are

Psychophysical and speech perception studies: a case report on a binaural cochlear implant subject.

Further improvements in speech perception for cochlear implant patients in quiet and in noise should be possible with speech processing strategies using binaural implants. For this reason, presented here is a series of initial psychophysical and speech perception studies on the authors' first binaural cochlear implant patient. For an approximate matching of the places of stimulation on the two sides, the patient usually reported a single percept when the two sides were simultaneously stimulated. Lateralization was strongly influenced by amplitude differences between the electrical stimuli on t

A psychophysical method for assessing visual and acoustic hyperaesthesia in patients with mild head injury.

Although it is well known that patients with mild head injury (MHI) are less able to endure intense light and sound stimuli than normal people, there are few psychophysical studies that have objectively measured this type of hyperaesthesia. In the present study, using a computerised rating scale technique, both the maximal and submaximal levels of reduced tolerance to light and sound were assessed for a wide range of stimuli. Three to six days after the trauma, 40 MHI patients were significantly less tolerant to stimuli of intensities over 71 dB and 500 lux levels than controls. These intensit

Psychophysical investigations of the temporal modulation sensitivity function in amblyopia: uniform field flicker.

The temporal modulation sensitivity function was studied in eight strabismic and/or anisometropic amblyopes and in two subjects with amblyopia resulting from monocular stimulus deprivation (cataract and ptosis). Half of the strabismic/anisometropic amblyopes showed a reduction in the sensitivity of the amblyopic eye. These differences were more marked at low and middle temporal frequencies. Two strabismic/anisometropic observers showed little difference in sensitivity between the two eyes, but in the remaining two observers the amblyopic eye was slightly more sensitive to low-frequency modulat

Experiment-Induced Nociception in Humans with Substance Use Disorders: A Review of Psychophysical Studies.

BACKGROUND: Pain perception in individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) is shaped by neuroadaptive changes in both peripheral and central nociceptive pathways. Accurate assessment of pain sensitivity in this population is essential for effective clinical management but remains challenging due to overlapping effects of drug use, tolerance, and withdrawal. OBJECTIVE: This review synthesizes findings on pain sensitivity in individuals with SUDs, focusing on experimentally induced nociception-specifically thresholds, tolerance, and perceived intensity of pain. STUDY DESIGN: A systematic n

Central sensitization inventory is associated with psychological functioning but not with psychophysical assessment of pain amplification.

BACKGROUND: The central sensitization inventory (CSI) is a questionnaire that has been widely used as a tool for assessing symptoms associated with sensitization. However, its ability to identify individuals with this phenomenon has recently been questioned. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation of CSI with psychosocial and psychophysical factors in patients with painful TMD diagnosed according to diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (DC/TMD) and asymptomatic controls, as well as to determine the influence of these variables on the CSI scores variations. METHODS:
