Psychosocial risk factors (work stress, low socioeconomic status, impaired social support, anger, anxiety and depression), certain personality traits (e.g. hostility) and post-traumatic stress disorders may negatively influence the incidence and course of multiple cardiovascular disease conditions. Systematic screening for these factors may help to adequately assess the psychosocial risk pattern of a given patient and may also contribute to the treatment of these patients. Recommendations for treatment are based on current guidelines. The physician-patient interaction should basically follow t

INTRODUCTION: Around 25% of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) do not respond to medication or psychotherapy, producing significant impairment and treatment challenges. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has been shown in multiple blinded trials to be a safe and durable emerging option for treatment-refractory OCD. Intraoperative device interrogation offers a theoretical anchor for starting outpatient DBS programming; however, no definitive post-operative programming algorithm for psychiatrists exists currently.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement after the death of someone close is universal, and clinicians may be uncertain if or what interventions may be beneficial.
PURPOSE: To synthesize effects of health care interventions for bereaved children and adults.
DATA SOURCES: Eight databases were searched from inception in September 2025, supplemented with screening reviews, guidelines, federal register entries, and expert input.
STUDY SELECTION: Dual independent reviewers selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing interventions for bereaved or soon-to-be bereaved persons with usual care, no interven

This article reviews the literature on the assessment of children under 6 years old for consideration of using psychopharmacology. Research suggests that childhood mental, behavioral, and developmental disorders begin early in life and, if untreated, may persist and affect multiple spheres of a child's functioning. Psychotherapeutic interventions should be considered first-line interventions for most mental health concerns in young children. Unfortunately, there are obstacles and limited access to psychotherapy for most families. Even when they do participate in evidence-based therapies, many

Functional somatic syndromes (FSS) are characterized by patterns of persistent bodily complaints for which adequate examination does not reveal sufficiently explanatory structural or other specified pathology. Here we reviewed the following diseases or pathologies: nervous cough, vocal cord dysfunction, multiple chemical sensitivity and sick building syndrome. All of these often accompany co-morbid psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety disorder and depression. Therefore, bio-psycho-social understanding and approach are required for diagnosis and treatment of patients with these diseases. Spec

Clinical and research findings are reviewed in relation to the distinction between endogenous and exogenous anxiety. The single most potent discriminating symptom between the two subtypes is the presence or absence of spontaneous (anxiety) symptom attacks. This concept avoids the diagnostic difficulties that can arise under current systems when patients present with symptoms that fulfill the criteria for multiple anxiety-related diagnosis. Patients in the endogenous category differ from those whose anxiety is reactive in age of onset, clinical course, and response to psychotherapy and medicati

With the development of empirically supported treatments over the decades, have youth psychotherapies grown stronger? To investigate, we examined changes over time in treatment effects for four frequently treated youth mental-health problems: anxiety, depression, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and conduct disorders. We used PubMed and PsycINFO to search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that were published between January 1960 and May 2017 involving youths between the ages of 4 and 18 years. We also searched reviews and meta-analyses of youth psychotherapy research, fol

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often comorbid with chronic migraine (CM) and chronic tension-type headache (CTTH). Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral psychotherapies, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and venlafaxine have demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of PTSD. Amitriptyline, topiramate, sodium valproate, and botulinum toxin A are efficacious for treatment of chronic daily headache (CDH). Treatment studies on individuals with CDH and comorbid PTSD, however, are limited. As such, multiple therapeutic agents or modes of interventions typically are necessary, such

Dyadic synchrony, the alignment in time of partners' behavioral, physiological, and emotional processes, has often been related to better psychotherapy outcome. However, conflicting findings on this association have recently emerged. Drawing on the theory of flexible multimodal synchrony, we examined five different synchrony modalities to explore the role of flexibility in synchrony (FS), the fluctuations in synchrony over time, in the synchrony-outcome association. We computed synchrony and FS in body movement, facial expression, heart rate, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, and electrodermal act

Objective: Although rupture repair is a core process in psychotherapy, its mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. In this theory-building case study, we used an explanatory sequential mixed-method design to examine dyadic processes underlying successful versus unsuccessful withdrawal rupture repair. Method: We observer-rated rupture and repair across N = 81 video-recorded sessions of a successful psychodynamic psychotherapy. We applied Exponentially Weighted Moving Average control charting to identify two treatment phases with above-average success in rupture repair, and one phase with b

Perinatal depression (PD) is one of the most common complications of pregnancy and childbirth affecting as many as one out of five women in high-income countries. The prevalence is even higher in low- and middle-income countries. Untreated PD can result in serious short- and long-term negative effects on both the mother and newborn including adverse perinatal outcomes and negatively impacting mother-infant bonding, breastfeeding, and child neurocognitive development. Therefore, evaluation of the current standard of treatment is necessary. Historically, PD has lacked effective evidenced-based t

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating disorder inflicting high degrees of symptomatic and socioeconomic burdens. The development of PTSD results from a cascade of events with contributions from multiple processes and the underlying pathophysiology is complex, involving neurotransmitters, neurocircuitry, and neuroanatomical pathways. Presently, only two medications are US FDA-approved for the treatment of PTSD, both selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). However, the complex underlying pathophysiology suggests a number of alternative pathways and mechanisms that may

This article presents a Therapeutic Assessment (TA) case study of a woman recovering from 4 years of intense medical treatment for stage IV cancer. The inclusion and utility of using the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP) in the TA is highlighted. The client's attachment classification as unresolved helped identify that her current experiences with dissociation and problems restructuring her life following cancer remission were related to severe childhood sexual abuse, which she had suppressed for decades. The AAP also provided information regarding the unconscious defensive proc

IMPORTANCE: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective treatment for depression but is infrequently used owing to stigma, uncertainty about indications, adverse effects, and perceived high cost.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the cost-effectiveness of ECT compared with pharmacotherapy/psychotherapy for treatment-resistant major depressive disorder in the United States.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A decision analytic model integrating data on clinical efficacy, costs, and quality-of-life effects of ECT compared with pharmacotherapy/psychotherapy was used to simulate depression treatme

OBJECTIVE: This study examined rupture-repair processes in child psychotherapy, focusing on therapist-reported repair strategies and their relation to child therapeutic alliance. The role of parental alliance and child's diagnostic profile in shaping rupture type and severity was also examined.
METHODS: Ninety-four child psychotherapists attended workshops on rupture and repair strategies adapted for children and reported on a single therapy session with children aged 3-13. Therapists completed measures of child and parent alliance, rupture type and intensity, and reported interventions based

Anxiety disorders are characterized by excessive fear and worry. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder (PD) are two of the most common anxiety disorders in the United States. GAD is defined as excessive worry and anxiety that occur on most days for at least 6 months that affect daily functioning. PD is defined by recurrent unexpected panic attacks. Patients with symptoms of GAD or PD should be assessed for conditions such as hyperthyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, and cardiac arrhythmia before confirmation of an anxiety disorder diagnosis. Recent evidence supported the notion that add-on group therapy should be provided to individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) who already undergo individual psychotherapy. The present 20 week-study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the adjunction of group interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-G) to individual interpersonal psychotherapy adapted for BPD - revised (IPT-BPD-R) in comparison with individual IPT-BPD-R alone in a group of BPD patients. In addition, demographical and clinical characteristics that can be considered predictors of response to add-on group therapy were inves

BACKGROUND: We investigated, if migration status, and additional sociodemographic and clinical factors, are associated with somatization and depressiveness at admission and with remission after inpatient psychotherapy.
METHODS: Multiple linear and binary logistic regression analyses were used to identify predictors for severity of somatoform and depressive symptoms at admission of inpatient psychotherapy (T0), and for remission after inpatient psychotherapy (T1). We tested the association between symptoms concerning somatization (PHQ-15: Patient-Health-Questionnaire Somatization Module) and d

The abuse of non dependence producing substances has been rarely reported. However, this can be a significant social problem and it may complicate psychiatric disorders like the anxiety states. We are reporting here, a case of the prolonged abuse of multiple gastrointestinal antibiotics like metronidazole, mebendazole and albendazole. The patient had fortunately not developed any overt toxicity from the overuse of these drugs. He was diagnosed with the generalized anxiety disorder with the anankastic personality disorder. He responded favourably to paroxetine and is being maintained on psychot

OBJECTIVE: Psychological distress has a high impact on quality of life in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease (PD), and Huntington's disease (HD). Studies have shown that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based therapies (MBTs) are successful in reducing psychological distress in patients with anxiety, depressive, and chronic somatic disorders. We aimed to investigate the effectiveness of these therapies in MS, PD, and HD patients.
METHODS: We performed a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase and the Cochrane Central Register of Co
