Phosphorus (P) bioavailability in soils is constrained by binding to Fe(III) minerals. While pyrogenic carbon (PyC) influences microbial Fe(III) reduction, its role in Fe(III)-bound P dynamics during redox fluctuations remains unresolved. Here, we demonstrate that PyC enhances Fe-bound P release during redox cycling via coupled biotic and abiotic pathways. Experiments with crystalline (FePO4·2H2O) and amorphous (FePO4·4H2O) ferric iron-phosphate minerals demonstrated that microbial Fe(III) reduction by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 under anoxic conditions released dissolved P, exceeding reimmobil

Bacterial superantigens are potent immune activators that trigger T cell proliferation and intensive release of cytokines, leading to toxic shock syndrome. Also, they impair host immune responses, increasing bacterial carriage and transmission. Several studies proposed that superantigens can induce regulatory T (Treg) cells, which may suppress immune responses against bacterial infection. However, the mechanism of Treg cell induction by superantigens is still elusive. We here demonstrated that streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin A (SPEA) promoted human CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ T cell induction in a dose-

It has been shown that prostaglandin (PG) E2 synthesized in the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) is involved in lipopolysaccharide-induced fever. But the neural mechanisms of how intra-LPBN PGE2 induces fever remain unclear. In this study, we investigated whether the LPBN-preoptic area (POA) pathway, the thermoafferent pathway for feed-forward thermoregulatory responses, mediates fever induced by intra-LPBN PGE2 in male rats. The core temperature (Tcore) was monitored using a temperature radiotelemetry transponder implanted in rat abdomen. We showed that microinjection of PGE2 (0.28 nmol) i

This paper presents the case of a patient who developed acute kidney injury and nephrotic syndrome following streptococcal cutaneous infection. He presented with microhematuria, severe proteinuria and systemic edema 5 days after infection. Blood examination showed elevated creatinine level, hypocomplementemia, and elevated anti-streptolysin O level. Renal biopsy revealed endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis with tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN). Immunofluorescence revealed C3-dominant glomerular staining, while electron microscopy showed hump-shaped subepithelial deposits. The pati

The effects of Leptospira interrogans on the heart and spleen of hamsters were studied histopathologically. Infected hamsters were sacrificed at 1 hour, 6 hours and on days 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 after inoculation with Leptospira interrogans serovar pyrogenes. The heart and spleen of each of the sacrificed animals were removed and processed for routine conventional light microscopy. Infected hearts showed degenerative change of the cardiac muscle cells composed of cellular swelling, condensation of chromatin granules, pyknotic nuclei and acidophilic cytoplasm. Congestion of the cardiac blood vess

The cytokine interleukin-1 (IL-1), which mediates many responses to infection and injury, induces anorexia and fever through direct actions in the central nervous system. The melanocortin neuropeptides, such as alpha melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), reportedly antagonize many actions of IL-1, including fever and anorexia. However, it is unknown whether endogenous melanocortins modulate anorexia induced by IL-1. The objective of the present study was to establish the effect of endogenous melanocortins on IL-1-induced anorexia and fever in the rat. Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) inj

Staphylococcus aureus may contain one or more genes that encode a variety of immunomodulatory pyrogenic toxins (PTs), including the staphylococcal enterotoxins and toxic shock syndrome toxin (TSST). The PTs interact with several cellular targets to produce disease, such as food poisoning and toxic shock syndrome. At present, nine serologically distinct enterotoxins and one immunoreactive form of TSST have been identified and characterized. As isolates of S. aureus are further assessed, it is anticipated that this number will increase. To facilitate screening, a multiplex PCR was designed to si

Experiments were done on 13 young lambs to determine if carotid denervation influences the cardiovascular and metabolic responses to i.v. administration of bacterial pyrogen [Salmonella abortus equi (SAE) 0.3 micrograms]. Each lamb was anesthetized with halothane and prepared for measurements of cardiac output, arterial and mixed venous oxygen saturations, and body core temperature. No sooner than 3 d after surgery, measurements were made during a control period and at 10-min intervals for 120 min after i.v. administration of SAE in seven carotid-intact lambs and six carotid-denervated lambs.

Because hypothalamus is a center for both the blood pressure and thermoregulation, we assumed that there is a close interrelationship between them. To prove this hypothesis, effects of intracerebroventricular (ICV) injections of a pyrogen, penicillin-G (Pc), on the blood pressure and rectal temperature (RT) were investigated. The ICV injections increased the mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR) and the abdominal sympathetic activity (SNA) dose-dependently in urethane-anesthetized rats. In conscious rats, Pc (100 U) elicited the two components of rises in MAP (+19 +/- 1 and +20 +/- 1 m

PREMISE: Volatile emissions from flowers and fruits play a key role in signalling to animals responsible for pollination and seed dispersal. Here, we investigated the pollination biology and chemical ecology of reproduction in Apodolirion buchananii, an African amaryllid that flowers in a leafless state soon after grassland vegetation is burnt in the dry late-winter season.
METHODS: Pollinators were identified through field collection and pollen loads were quantified. Floral traits including spectral reflectance and scent chemistry were documented. Bioassays using cup traps were used to test

Pyrogenic carbon (PC) can mediate electron transfer and thus catalyze biogeochemical processes to impact greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Here, we demonstrate that PC can contribute to mitigating GHG emissions by promoting the Fe(III)-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). It was found that the amendment PCs in microcosms dominated by Methanoperedenaceae performing Fe(III)-dependent AOM simultaneously promoted the rate of AOM and Fe(III) reduction with a consistent ratio close to the theoretical stoichiometry of 1:8. Further correlation analysis showed that the AOM rate was linearly co

Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides are ubiquitous in paddy soils and play a key role in Cd retention. Recent studies report that pyrogenic carbon (PC) may largely affect the microbial transformation processes of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides, yet the impact of PC on the fate of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxide-associated Cd during redox fluctuations remains unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of PC on Cd retention during microbial (Shewanella oneidensis MR-1) transformation of Cd(II)-bearing ferrihydrite under varying redox conditions. The results showed that in the absence of PC, microbial reduction of ferrihydr

The meningococcal C conjugate vaccine (MenCC) is an interesting model with which to test the efficacy of the Monocyte Activation Test (MAT) as an alternative method of pyrogen testing in the quality control of vaccines. The MenCC that has been produced by Bio-Manguinhos in Brazil is in the final development stage, and, as recommended in the guidelines for MenCC production, its pyrogen content must be determined by using the Limulus Amoebocyte Lysate (LAL) assay and the Rabbit Pyrogen Test (RPT). This represents an ideal opportunity to compare LAL and RPT data with data obtained by using a MAT

The addition of pyrogenic organic matter (PyOM), the aromatic carbon-rich product of the incomplete combustion of plant biomass or fossil fuels, to soil can influence the rate of microbial metabolism of native soil carbon. The interaction of soil heterotrophs with PyOM may be governed by the surficial chemical and physical properties of PyOM that evolve with environmental exposure. We present results of a 36-day laboratory incubation investigating the interaction of a common white-rot fungus, Trametes versicolor, with three forms of 13C-enriched (2.08 atom% 13C) PyOM derived from Pinus pondero

Streptococcus pyogenes that produces the bacterial superantigen streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin A (SpeA) is associated with outbreaks of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) in the United States and Europe. SpeA stimulates V beta 2.1, 12.2, 14.1, and 15.1-positive T cells, and the lymphokine production from the activated T cells is believed to result in the symptoms associated with STSS. The T-cell receptor (TCR)-SpeA interaction is crucial for superantigenic activity, and studies were undertaken to determine regions of both SpeA and the TCR involved in the formation of MHC/SpeA/TCR comp

Streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin (SPE) potentiates lethal shock induced by endotoxin. We have previously reported that macrophages derived from SPE-treated rabbits showed hyperreactivity to endotoxin, and that the effect of SPE on macrophages was mediated by a lymphokine(s). Here we show that culture supernatants of SPE-stimulated lymphocytes, when administered into rabbits three hours before or together with endotoxin, potentiate a variety of endotoxin-induced pathophysiological changes and even lethal shock. These results suggest that SPE-induced lymphokine(s) mediates the potentiating effec
