Differentiation of strains of Mycoplasma fermentans from various sources by pyrolysis mass spectrometry.

Mycoplasma fermentans has attracted much interest both as a cofactor for the progression of AIDS and as a pathogenic agent in non-AIDS related diseases. Previous studies with serological and genetic techniques suggest that M. fermentans represents a homogeneous group of organisms, with no significant differences identified among the strains examined. In this study, 25 cultures of M. fermentans, including isolates from human sources and tissue culture cells, were compared by pyrolysis mass spectrometry (PMS). It was possible to distinguish the 'type' strain PG-18 from an AIDS-associated M. ferm

Effect of tire pyrolysis oil and graphene oxide nanoparticles as an additive in the diesel engine.

The majority of industries throughout the world rely largely on fossil fuels as their primary energy source. However, these resources are finite and become scarcer by the day. Therefore, exploring alternative fuels and additives for diesel fuel is imperative to mitigate fuel consumption. A diesel engine powered with different blends of diesel fuel (DF), graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles, and tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) was used in this investigation. The goal was to undertake in-depth evaluations of performance and emission characteristics. The findings of these investigations were compared to th

Functional use of carbon dioxide for the sustainable valorization of orange peel in the pyrolysis process.

Although biomass is carbon-neutral, its use as a primary feedstock faces challenges arising from inconsistent supply chains. Therefore, it becomes crucial to explore alternatives with reliable availability. This study proposes a strategic approach for the thermochemical valorization of food processing waste, which is abundantly generated at single sites within large-scale processing plants. As a model biomass waste from the food industry, orange peel waste was particularly chosen considering its substantial consumption. To impart sustainability to the pyrolysis system, CO2, a key greenhouse ga

Quantification of nanoplastics uptake and transport in lettuce by pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Nanoplastics (NPs) can enter the edible parts of crop and threaten human health, which attract widespread attention. However, the precise quantification of NPs in crop is still a tremendous challenge. Herein, a method with Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) digestion, dichloromethane extraction combined with pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) quantification was present to quantify polystyrene (PS) NPs uptake in lettuce (Lactuca sativa). 25% of TMAH was optimized as extraction solvent and 590 °C was selected as pyrolysis temperature. Recoveries of 73.4-96.9% were obtain

Characteristics of dissolved organic matter composition in biochar: Effects of feedstocks and pyrolysis temperatures.

Biochar has widely used in soil pollution remediation due to its advantages of high efficiency and environmental sustainability. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) released by biochar plays a non-negligible role in the migration and transformation of pollutants in environment, and its composition was regarded as main impact factor. In this study, 28 biochar were investigated to detect the effect of pyrolysis temperature and feedstock on DOM content and components. Results showed that the content of DOM released from biochar at low pyrolysis temperatures (300-400 ℃) was higher than that from high p

Waste to drugs: identification of pyrolysis by-products as antifungal agents against Cryptococcus neoformans.

The fungi, Cryptococcus neoformans cause major infections such as cryptococcal meningitis and cryptococcosis. Therefore, we explored the use of Thioredoxin reductase (Trr1) from C. neoformans as a gene target for the development of novel antifungal agents. Trr1 plays an essential role in the survival in the oxidative environment of macrophages and is important for the virulence of C. neoformans. During the thermochemical conversion (pyrolysis) of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB), a cocktail of compounds is produced by the decomposition and degradation. In general, LCB-derived cocktail of compound

Influence of metal oxide catalyst on co-pyrolysis of biomass and COVID-19 waste.

The disposal of waste generated by the COVID-19 pandemic is still a challenge to the government in most countries. The present study shines its light on the catalytic effect of metal oxide on converting COVID-19 waste i.e. used face masks into valuable products through co-pyrolysis. The co-pyrolysis trial was carried out for a mixture of waste face mask (WFM) and Moringa oleifera (MO) biomass at a constant temperature of 450°C for 15 min of resident time. This investigation focuses on studying the catalytic effect of calcium oxide (CaO) on the by-products of the pyrolysis process. From the FT-

Pyrolysis of end-of-life polystyrene in a pilot-scale reactor: Maximizing styrene production.

Chemical recycling of polystyrene (PS) via pyrolysis is of great industrial, and academic interest, with styrene being the primary product of interest. To identify the optimal process conditions, the pyrolysis of end-of-life PS was studied in a pilot-scale unit consisting of an extruder, and a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The PS was pyrolyzed with continuous feeding at a pressure range from 0.02 to 1.0bara, and a temperature range from 450 to 600 °C, giving primarily styrene, other mono-aromatics, and oligomers. The comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC) coupled

Volatile and semivolatile emissions from the pyrolysis of almond shell loaded with heavy metals.

Heavy metal-loaded almond shell was subjected to pyrolysis to understand the effect of the presence of different heavy metals on its thermal degradation. Pyrolysis behavior of native and metal-loaded samples was studied by thermogravimetric analysis. Similar shapes of thermogravimetric curves indicate that the presence of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) did not change the main degradation pathways of almond shell. However, the temperature at which the decomposition in each stage takes place at a higher rate and char yield was considerably modified by the pre

Nitrogen conversion in relation to NH3 and HCN during microwave pyrolysis of sewage sludge.

The nitrogen conversions in relation to NH3 and HCN were investigated during microwave pyrolysis of sewage sludge. The nitrogen distributions and evolution of nitrogen functionalities in the char, tar, and gas fractions were conducted. The results suggested that the thermal cracking of protein in sludge produced three important intermediate compounds, including the amine-N, heterocyclic-N, and nitrile-N compounds. The deamination of amine-N compounds resulted from labile proteins cracking led to the formation of NH3 (about 7.5% of SS-N) between 300 and 500 °C. The cracking of nitrile-N and het

Direct Synthesis of Single-Crystalline LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 Cathodes From Lithium-Containing Precursors via Spray Pyrolysis.

Single-crystalline cathode materials have attracted considerable attention for addressing the cycling instability of Ni-rich layered cathode materials caused by anisotropic lattice strain during repeated cycling. However, conventional synthesis methods for single-crystalline cathodes generally require high temperatures and prolonged calcination times. Alternative approaches, such as multistep lithiation, molten-salt, and hydrothermal methods, still suffer from limitations such as complex processes, mandatory washing, and challenges in large-scale production. Therefore, in this study, a direct

Catalytic co-pyrolysis of polylactic acid and high-density polyethylene over hierarchical zeolite catalysts.

Catalytic fast co-pyrolysis of polylactic acid (PLA) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) was investigated using a tandem micro-reactor/gas chromatogram spectrometry (TMR-GC/MS) to selectively produce BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene). Non-catalytic co-pyrolysis revealed strong synergistic suppression of oxygenated products, which was most pronounced at a PLA/HDPE mass ratio of 0.75/0.25, originating from efficient hydrogen transfer between oxygen-rich PLA-derived intermediates and hydrogen-rich HDPE-derived species. To enhance deoxygenation and aromatization, hierarchical HZSM

Slow pyrolysis of mixed textile waste: towards sustainable recycled coal and added value chemicals.

In Europe, 12.6 million tons of textile waste are generated annually (European Commission - Press release, Circular economy for textiles, 2023), and most of them are incinerated or landfilled. The sustainable recycling of textile residues is a key challenge worldwide and thermochemical processes are promising solutions to transform textiles into added-value products. This study examines slow pyrolysis at pilot scale, by processing two textile waste samples with high (TXN) and low (TX) nitrogen content, to evaluate the impact of nitrogen on pyrolysis process and reaction products. The tests sho
