Compensation for musculoskeletal disorders in Quebec: systemic discrimination against women workers?

Criteria for evaluating workers' compensation claims for occupational disease are strongly linked to medical expertise as supported by scientific study, yet decision-makers are not necessarily familiar with the meaning of these studies. While this is a problem for all claimants, who bear the burden of proving that work caused their injury, the adverse impact of misunderstanding of scientific data can have particular consequences for women, whose work more often appears to be benign. This article reports on a study of empirical data drawn from analysis of 314 workers' compensation appeal tribun

Management of potentially inappropriate life-sustaining therapies: a survey of Quebec intensivists.

PURPOSE: Potentially inappropriate treatments (PITs) are a common issue in the intensive care unit (ICU) with substantial economic and human impacts. Previous studies about PITs in Canada lacked representation of physicians practicing in the province of Quebec and were conducted before the 2023 updated reference document on consent to care from the Collège des Médecins du Québec and the Barreau du Québec. We sought to evaluate the approaches and perspectives of adult ICU physicians in Quebec regarding demands for potentially inappropriate life-sustaining therapies (LSTs) and cardiopulmonary re

Prevalence and risk factors of musculoskeletal disorders among paramedics in Quebec, Canada.

Paramedics face a challenging work environment with a high risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). This study examined the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and its associations with self-reported individual, physical, and psychosocial risk factors among 334 paramedics in Quebec. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires and analysed using multiple logistic regressions. Results showed that 69% of participants reported musculoskeletal pain in the past 12 months, most commonly in the back, shoulders, and neck. Tasks involving hand movements above shoulder level and working w

Medication trajectories among persons with multiple sclerosis in a Quebec birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Polypharmacy in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with reduced quality of life. There is limited evidence on the long-term use of any medication and its evolution among individuals living with MS in the province of Quebec, Canada. OBJECTIVE: To identify medication trajectories and describe characteristics of individuals within these trajectories. METHODS: In a birth cohort, people with MS were identified from a validated algorithm based on use of health services from 1997 onward. Those covered by public drug insurance during at least three years until 2014 we

Experience of COVID-19 universal screening in obstetrical units in Quebec, Canada.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, some jurisdictions used universal screening for SARS-CoV-2 infection at obstetrical units. This study evaluated the utility of this screening strategy. METHODS: We assessed the asymptomatic infection rate and test positivity rate at six obstetrical units in Quebec, Canada. RESULTS: 32,663 parturients were admitted to the six obstetrical units, of which 77.5% were tested for SARS-CoV-2 on admission. Among all six sites, 388 parturients (1.2% [95% CI 1.07% to 1.31%]) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. Of these, 74.2% were asymptomatic. Rates of positive a

[Informal caregivers for the elderly and their ethnocultural background in Quebec: the contribution of a quantitative analysis].

INTRODUCTION: The number of informal caregivers is expected to increase along with global aging, particularly in countries struggling with shortages of health care professionals, such as in Quebec (Canada). In a society built on immigration, it is more than relevant to question the prevalence of the role of informal caregivers among ethnocultural communities of immigrant origin. To the best of our knowledge, no study has quantitatively studied ethnic informal caregivers for these communities in Québec. Our exploratory research aims to fill this gap. PURPOSE OF RESEARCH: This research aim

Changes in industrial air pollution and the onset of childhood asthma in Quebec, Canada.

Ambient air pollution has been associated with asthma onset and exacerbation in children. Whether improvement in air quality due to reduced industrial emissions has resulted in improved health outcomes such as asthma in some localities has usually been assessed indirectly with studies on between-subject comparisons of air pollution from all sources and health outcomes. In this study we directly assessed, within small areas in the province of Quebec (Canada), the influence of changes in local industrial fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrat

Mapping the abundance of endemic mosquito-borne diseases vectors in southern Quebec.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is increasing the dispersion of mosquitoes and the spread of viruses of which some mosquitoes are the main vectors. In Quebec, the surveillance and management of endemic mosquito-borne diseases, such as West Nile virus or Eastern equine encephalitis, could be improved by mapping the areas of risk supporting vector populations. However, there is currently no active tool tailored to Quebec that can predict mosquito population abundances, and we propose, with this work, to help fill this gap. METHODS: Four species of mosquitos were studied in this project for the perio
