Spinning on its axes: DSM and the social construction of psychiatric diagnosis.

Through a critical examination of the psychiatric profession's heavy reliance on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the authors explore the central role of diagnosis in the theory and practice of psychiatry. The set of beliefs that have guided the psychiatric profession since the creation of DSM-III are viewed as being tied to the new extension of the biopsychiatric medical model. From a sociological perspective, the authors address the issue of psychiatric nosology with reference to practice styles and professional dominance, and consider the impact of DSM's intrinsic

Reciprocal Relations Between Maternal Depression and Child Behavior Problems in Families Served by Head Start.

This study used longitudinal cross-lagged modeling to examine reciprocal relations between maternal depression and child behavior problems. Data were drawn from 3,119 children (40% Hispanic, 30% African American, 20% White, and 10% other) from the Family and Child Experiences Survey of 2009 (a nationally representative sample of children served by Head Start). Results documented reciprocal relations between maternal depression and child behavior problems across early childhood (i.e., child age 3-5). Furthermore, the effect of child behavior problems on maternal depression was moderated by chil

Stress, the sympathetic nervous system and hypertension.

Stress may be an important contributor to the pathogenesis of idiopathic (essential) hypertension. The probable pathway involves activation of the sympathetic nervous system and thereby an increase in peripheral resistance. This paper reviews the hemodynamics of early hypertension and attempts to relate them to stress-mediated overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. Attention is also given the relations between obesity, race, sex and geography to hypertension.

Racial impact of diurnal variations in blood pressure on cardiovascular events in chronic kidney disease.

Ambulatory blood pressure parameters, nocturnal dipping and morning surge, are associated with cardiovascular outcomes in several populations. While significant variation exists between racial groups in ambulatory blood pressure measurements and the incidence of cardiovascular disease, the effect of race on the associations of dipping and morning surge with cardiovascular outcomes is unknown. In a prospective analysis of 197 African American and 197 Japanese individuals with non-diabetic chronic kidney disease matched by age and renal function, we analyzed the associations of dipping and morni

Body Mass Index and Decline in Cognitive Function in Older Black and White Persons.

BACKGROUND: While body mass index (BMI) is higher in black compared to white persons, little is known about BMI and change in cognition in cohorts with a large proportion of blacks. We examine relations of BMI with decline in global cognition and five cognitive domains, in older blacks and whites, and determine whether relations differ by race. METHODS: Participants were 2,134 persons without baseline dementia (33% black; 75% women; mean age =77.9 [range 53-100] and education = 14.7 years, Mini-Mental State Examination = 28.0), enrolled in one of two longitudinal, community-based cohort studi

Dugald Stewart and Racial Theory in the Late Scottish Enlightenment.

This article recovers the racial theory that Dugald Stewart taught as Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh from 1785 until 1810. In the third, political, segment of his lecture course Stewart presented various racial theories and offered his own opinion that non-European races were not naturally inferior to Europeans. Slavery, he concluded, was therefore unnatural in all its forms. However, though he believed all races were equally perfectible, Stewart nevertheless presented a picture of the world's peoples arranged along a civilizational scale with "civilised" white Eu

[Psychoanalysis of historically foreign phenomena--exemplified by Sinti and Roma].

The xenophobia directed at Gypsies has received little attention from the psychoanalytic vantage. The author approaches the subject by drawing upon Freud's work on the uncanny and Fenichel's on anti-semitism in order to analyse the transformation of fear of the foreign into hatred of the foreign. With reference to the difference in significance between anti-semitism and hostility towards Gypsies as operative factors in the process of western civilization, the author argues that, like anti-semitism, antagonism towards Gypsies is based in the projection of unacceptable aspects of the self onto o

Sharing the Power of White Privilege to Catalyze Positive Change in Academic Medicine.

White privilege can be often overlooked and poorly understood in academic medicine, by those who wield it, and by those who suffer from its deleterious effects. Dr. Peggy McIntosh, a leader in research on equity and diversity in education, described white privilege as a set of unearned benefits that white people have based on being born white in a culture that favors the white race. White people have privilege because it was given to them by other white people, and it was taken by claiming superiority over people of color, starting before the European colonizations of Africa, Asia, and the Ame

Neural processing of race by individuals with Williams syndrome: do they show the other-race effect? (And why it matters).

Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic condition with a distinctive social phenotype characterized by excessive sociability accompanied by a relative proficiency in face recognition, despite severe deficits in the visuospatial domain of cognition. This consistent phenotypic characteristic and the relative homogeneity of the WS genotype make WS a compelling human model for examining genotype-phenotype relations, especially with respect to social behavior. Following up on a recent report suggesting that individuals with WS do not show race bias and racial stereotyping, this study was designed to in

Determinants of social status among homeless adults.

OBJECTIVES: To examine determinants of subjective social status (SSS) among 394 sheltered homeless adults. METHODS: Demographics, socioeconomic status, homelessness, and other life factors were examined as potential determinants of US and Community SSS using parametric tests. RESULTS: Higher income, African-American/other race, having health insurance, being employed, having longer duration of homelessness, having children, and being of non-veteran status were each significantly associated with higher SSS-US. African-American/ other race and having health insurance were significantly associa

Disgust sensitivity mediates the effects of race on contamination aversion.

African Americans report greater contamination aversion than European Americans. Few studies have attempted to identify potential causes for this elevated contamination aversion, though existing research and theory suggests this may be partly due to concomitant heightened disgust sensitivity. The present study examined the relations between race, disgust sensitivity, and contamination aversion among African and European Americans. A convenience sample of fourhundred and twenty-nine participants completed the Disgust Scale - Revised (DS-R) and the Padua Inventory - Revised (PI-R). African Ameri

Sun-Exposed Skin Color Is Associated with Changes in Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D in Racially/Ethnically Diverse Children.

BACKGROUND: UVB light from the sun increases serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration, but this relation may depend on skin pigmentation among different racial/ethnic groups. OBJECTIVE: We used quantitative measures of exposed (facultative) and unexposed (constitutive) skin color to examine relations between serum 25(OH)D concentration, tanning, race/ethnicity, and constitutive skin color over the summer, following winter vitamin D supplementation. METHODS: The subjects (n= 426, mean age 11.7 ± 1.4 y, 51% female) were racially/ethnically diverse schoolchildren (57% non-white/Caucasi

Intolerance and psychopathology: toward a general diagnosis for racism, sexism, and homophobia.

Racism, sexism, and homophobia do not fit into any current diagnostic category. The authors propose that those who engage in such behaviors display a form of psychopathology deserving of its own category. The common denominator seems to be intolerance. The authors explore the possibility of an intolerant personality disorder, outline likely symptoms, and suggest some possible treatment considerations.

Perfect subjects: race, tuberculosis, and the Qu'Appelle BCG Vaccine Trial.

This article examines how Native children of the Qu'Appelle reserves in southern Saskatchewan became the subjects of a trial of the BCG vaccine for tuberculosis in 1933. Race and theories of racial evolution were referred to in the construction of the Native people as "primitives" and the reserves as disease menaces to the surrounding communities. Dr. R.G. Ferguson, medical superintendent of the nearby Qu'Appelle Sanatorium conducted the trial in order to prove that BCG could provide resistance to tuberculosis even among the "less evolved races." While BCG afforded some protection against tube

Rewriting the history of Chinese families in nineteenth-century Australia.

The nineteenth-century Chinese population in Australia was made up mostly of men, drawing many commentators to the conclusion these men faced an absence of family life, resulting in prostitution, gambling, opium use and other so-called vices. Recent research has, however, expanded and complicated our knowledge of Chinese families in New South Wales and Victoria, particularly concerning the extent to which Chinese men and white Australian women formed intimate relationships. This article traces the origins of the misconceptions about Chinese families in nineteenth-century Australia, and conside

The antecedents and implications of interracial anxiety.

Drawing on previous theorizing from both the prejudice and social anxiety literatures, a model of the antecedents and implications of intergroup anxiety is offered. It is argued that a lack of positive previous experiences with outgroup members creates negative expectancies about interracial interactions, which result in intergroup anxiety. This anxiety is posited to result in heightened hostility toward outgroup members and a desire to avoid interacting with outgroup members. Study 1 examined White participants' responses to interacting with Black people using a range of self-report measures;

Threshold-effect of income on periodontitis and interactions with race/ethnicity and education.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to explore the shape of the relationship of income and education with periodontal health, and to assess the interactions between them and race/ethnicity. METHOD: Individual level data from the Brazilian National Oral Health Survey in 2010 (Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde Bucal-SB Brasil 2010) were obtained for 9,779 subjects. Relations between per capita income and education with periodontal health were smoothed using Locally Weighted Scatter-plot Smoother (Lowess) technique. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess independent effects of income,

Racial differences in early adolescent substance use: Child abuse types and family/peer substance use as predictors.

This study examined the associations among child abuse types, family/peer substance use, and adolescent substance use, as well as testing whether these associations vary by race. The sample was derived from the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (N = 562). Child sexual abuse, family substance use, and peer substance use were associated with a higher likelihood of adolescent substance use. Sexual abuse was more strongly associated with substance use in Black youth than in White youth. Conversely, greater peer substance use had a stronger association with substance use in White yout

Pseudofolliculitis barbae. Medical consequences of interracial friction in the US Army.

Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) is a minor disease affecting only, and almost all, blacks who shave. Because of a continued requirement by the US Army of clean shaven faces, significant interracial turmoil and animosity has been aroused. Unclear standards of care of the disease and haphazard policing of shaving habits led to a chaotic process with effective dermatologic care almost paralyzed by the hostile parties. Randomly approached lower-ranking enlistees and draftees are much more likely to complain about their disease, even if minor, and are more likely to refuse to shave and be unkempt e
