This commentary highlights a need for comprehensive measures of structural racism tailored to cancer health disparities, in particular Black-White disparities in multiple myeloma (MM). Recent political and social calls and advances in the ability to quantitate structural racism have led to rapidly growing research on the health consequences of structural racism. However, to date, most studies have used unidimensional measures of structural racism that do not capture cumulative influences or enable the identification of factors most responsible for driving disparities. Furthermore, measures may

Racism is a pervasive threat to health with differential impact based on race and ethnicity. Considering the continued perpetration and visibility of racism online and in the news, vicarious racism, or "secondhand" racism when hearing about or witnessing racism being committed against members of one's ethnic or racial group, is a particularly urgent threat in the context of such disparities and their subsequent health consequences. The current study examines if frequency of exposure to vicarious racism and the emotional impact of those experiences are linked to psychoactive substance use, and

BACKGROUND: Recent research has identified structural racism-systemic policies and practices that perpetuate racial inequalities-as a significant social determinant of population health. Studies utilizing data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study have shown an association between higher levels of state-level structural racism and increased tobacco use among youth in the United States. However, there has been limited exploration of the psychosocial mediators of this relationship, particularly in the context of youth aged 10-16 years.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to asses

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between structural racism and labor neuraxial analgesia use.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed 2017 U.S. natality data for non-Hispanic Black and White birthing people. The exposure was a multidimensional structural racism index measured in the county of the delivery hospital. It was calculated as the mean of three Black-White inequity ratios (ratios for lower education, unemployment, and incarceration in jails) and categorized into terciles, with the third tercile corresponding to high structural racism. The outcome was the labor neuraxial anal

BACKGROUND: Despite a publicly funded system, health care in Canada has been shown to be deeply inequitable, particularly toward Indigenous people. Based on research identifying key dimensions of equity-oriented health care as being cultural safety, harm reduction and trauma- and violence-informed care, an intervention to promote equity at the organizational level was tested in primary health care, refined and adapted, and tested in Emergency Departments (EDs).
METHODS: In partnership with clinical, community and Indigenous leaders in three diverse EDs in one Canadian province, we supported d

Structural racism drives inequities in opioid use disorder, overdose, and treatment access. However, less is known about how it shapes coalition-led implementation of opioid prevention and treatment strategies. Using structural racism as a lens, this study examines how community coalition members described the selection and implementation of opioid-related evidence-based practices intended to reach racial and ethnic minoritized communities. This qualitative study used interview data from 355 coalition members involved in the HEALing Communities Study, a community-engaged, wait-listed, cluster-

Introduction One strategy for combatting the effects of racism in healthcare is to provide education on racism's manifestations. However, implementing effective training is challenging because of its complexity and resource requirements. Our objective in this study was to determine whether a new racism in medicine workshop, intentionally designed through the use of adult learning theories to be easy to deliver, community-centered, and thoughtful, could improve participant confidence in understanding racism in medicine in a manner applicable across multiple specialties. Methods We conducted a s

OBJECTIVES: Addressing structural racism remains a critical challenge in population health and social sciences, as traditional quantitative approaches often fail to disrupt long-standing racialized health hierarchies. This study critically interrogates the process of a multidisciplinary scientific collaboration attempting to operationalize and measure life course structural racism while enacting an anti-racist praxis.
DESIGN: Utilizing a collaborative analytic autoethnography framework grounded in social cognitive theory and anti-racist praxis, our team - comprising biostatisticians, nurse sc

Background: Gendered racism has been previously associated with greater alcohol use among Asian American men (AAM), yet the mechanisms underlying this association are not fully understood. Objectives: This study thus investigated whether gendered racism is associated with hazardous alcohol use among AAM directly and indirectly via drinking to cope and resistance and empowerment against racism. 253 AAM (M = 36.75 years old) completed an online cross-sectional survey that contained the study questionnaires. Hierarchical regression analyses examined the association between gendered racism and haz

Understanding the relationship between structural racism and health is essential for identifying practice- and policy-based interventions to reduce health inequities. We developed neighborhood-based measures of structural racism and tested their associations with adverse pregnancy outcomes, health outcomes characterized by some of the most pronounced racial inequities. We leveraged electronic health records from 89,410 pregnant patients at six Chicago-area hospitals. Patients were linked with neighborhood exposure to 22 experiences reflective of structural racism based on home address, geocode

This essay investigates rhetorical dehumanization in the US related to systemic racism, sexism, and classism. While I revisit well-known cases of medical exploitation in the stories of Henrietta Lacks and the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, I examine them through a new lens by undertaking a rhetorical analysis of medical journal articles written on them, demonstrating how the genre of scientific writing, with its emphasis on objectivity and neutrality, mitigated concerns about the suffering and mortality of Black Americans and overlooked exploitation in the name of scientific advancement. I conclude

In recent years, Black people in the U.S. have had one of the highest increases in opioid overdose mortality rates, despite being less likely to be prescribed opioids for pain. This population is also less likely to receive medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Chronic pain is a central factor in understanding this crisis, as minoritized people are more likely to live with undertreated pain, a major risk factor for developing opioid use disorder (OUD). Current practices fail to effectively treat pain among persons with OUD, a missed opportunity that is worse in minoritized populations an

Research suggests that stress due to racism may underlie the disproportionately high rates of adverse pregnancy outcomes experienced by Black women in the US. Study objectives: (1) Identify forms of systemic racism affecting pregnancy outcomes and (2) increase understanding about the role of racism in adverse pregnancy outcomes for Black women. A systematic review was conducted to explore the relationship between systemic racism and pregnancy outcomes for Black women. Searches were performed using EBSCO Academic Search Complete, CINAHL Complete, and Consumer Health Complete first between Janua

Objective: Previous research has shown that experiences of racial discrimination and sexual objectification are associated with health risk behaviours among gay and bisexual men of colour. However, little is known about whether racial discrimination and sexual objectification are associated with alcohol use among this population. This community-based study examined the association between racial discrimination, sexual objectification and alcohol use in a sample of 369 gay and bisexual men of colour (Black/African/Caribbean, Latino/Latin American, South Asian, and East and Southeast Asian) in T

Racism is a significant psychosocial stressor that is hypothesized to have negative psychological and physical health consequences. The Reserve Capacity Model (Gallo & Matthews, 2003) suggests that low socioeconomic status may influence health through its effects on negative affect. We extend this model to study the effects of racism, examining the association of lifetime perceived racism to trait and daily negative affect. A multiethnic sample of 362 American-born Black and Latino adults completed the Perceived Ethnic Discrimination Questionnaire-Community Version (PEDQ-CV). Trait negative af

Experiencing racism and anti-immigrant discrimination has a negative impact on health, including healthcare utilization. A growing body of research has connected vicarious experiences of racism and anti-immigrant discrimination to health decline; however, there is a dearth of literature examining the impact of these vicarious experiences on healthcare utilization. Using data from the 2023 and 2024 California Health Interview Survey (n = 46,481), we examined the association between vicarious experiences of hate incidents in the last 12 months motivated by race or skin color and immigration stat

Despite increasing racial diversity in higher education in the United States (US), racially minoritized students (i.e., students from the Global Majority; GM) continue to experience stress related to discrimination and structural oppression. Evaluating and addressing racism in higher education across multiple levels (e.g., distal and proximal) is critical to student success. This study tested two complementary approaches to understand associations between departmental racism and GM students' mental health. First, Hatzenbuehler's Psychological Mediation Minority Stress Theory was tested by exam

OBJECTIVE: Maltreatment based on race, sex, or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or other sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQ+) status is a significant life stressor, potentially independent of whether it can be categorized as a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition, text revision (DSM-5-TR) trauma. Yet there is a relative lack of research systematically examining these events, their intersectionality, and links to posttraumatic stress (PTS). The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive measure of social discrimination and maltreatment (SDM)

PURPOSE: Black adolescents in the United States face disproportionate poor nutrition and obesity risk due to racism. Intersections of larger structural contexts that pose differential access to Black adolescents' health resources, such as state-level racism and neighborhood-level disadvantage, may govern these risks. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the associations between state-level racism, neighborhood disadvantage, and their intersection with nutrition and obesity for Black adolescents in a longitudinal study.
METHODS: Publicly available administrative data measurin
