Radar-Based Fall Detection Using Micro-Doppler Signatures: A Comparative Analysis of YOLO Architectures.

Human lifespan is increasing in parallel with the development levels of societies. Consequently, the number of elderly individuals worldwide is also rising day by day. One of the most significant risks these individuals face is falling. In this study, fall and daily activity data were collected from different home environments using a continuous-wave (CW) radar. Micro-Doppler signatures were generated from 700 data samples obtained from 10 individuals. Furthermore, the dataset was expanded by doubling the number of spectrogram images through data augmentation. The YOLO architecture, generally

Physics-aware generative fusion via Complex-Flow Mamba enables robust 4D radar-vision perception.

4D imaging millimeter-wave radar is quickly redrawing the map for autonomous perception. However, a significant limitation persists: conventional deep learning models often fall into a 'point cloud fallacy.' They treat radar echoes as simple discrete points, which washes out the complex-domain phase coherence. This renders systems highly vulnerable to interrupted sampling repeater jamming (ISRJ) and degrades performance on sparse targets at long ranges. We propose Complex-Flow Mamba, a framework that dives below the feature level to work directly at the signal-physics layer. We started by buil

Hybrid robust beamforming for enhanced multiple moving object detection with phased array scanning radar.

The deficiencies of conventional radar systems can be addressed by utilizing a phased array scanning radar with robust beamforming capable of detecting and tracking multiple moving objects while rejecting interferences under noisier environments. This paper offers the idea of a 30 × 30 Uniform Rectangular Array (URA)-based radar system with the employment of a hybrid robust beamformer, a combination of Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) and Linearly Constrained Minimum Variance (LCMV) beamformer with diagonal loading. Initially, a simulation work with experimental validation of a

Validation of a micro-doppler radar for measuring gait modifications during multidirectional visual perturbations.

BACKGROUND: Changes in spatio-temporal gait parameters and their variability during balance-challenging tasks are markers of motor performance linked to fall risk. Radio frequency (RF) sensors hold great promise towards achieving continuous remote monitoring of these parameters. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: To establish the concurrent validity of RF-based gait metrics extracted using micro-Doppler (µD) signatures and to determine whether these metrics are sensitive to gait modifications created by multidirectional visual perturbations. METHODS: Fifteen participants walked overground in a virtual envi

Outdoor noncontact respiratory measurements of unrestricted rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) using millimeter-wave radar.

Respiration is an invaluable signal that facilitates the real-time observation of physiological dynamics. In recent years, the advancement of noncontact measurement technology has gained momentum in capturing physiological activities in natural settings. This technology is anticipated to be found not only in humans but also in nonhuman primates. Currently, the predominant noncontact approach for nonhuman animals involves measuring vital signs through subtle variations in skin color. However, this approach is limited when addressing areas of the body covered with hair or when working in outdoor

Smart Spread Spectrum Modulated Tags for Detection of Vulnerable Road Users with Automotive Radar.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of collisions between vehicles and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, road workers and more recently scooter riders, especially in urban streets. This work studies the feasibility of enhancing the detection of these users by means of CW radars because they have a low radar cross section. Since the speed of these users is usually low, they can be confused with clutter due to the presence of large objects. To this end, this paper proposes, for the first time, a method based on a spread spectrum radio communica

Image-Guided Radar Reflector Localization for Small Soft-Tissue Lesions in the Musculoskeletal System.

Preoperative localization of nonpalpable breast lesions using a radar reflector surgical guidance system has become commonplace, but the clinical utility of this emerging technology in the musculoskeletal system has not yet been well established. The system components include a console, a handpiece, an implanted radiofrequency reflector that works as a lesion marker, and an infrared light-emitting probe to guide the surgeon. The reflector can be deployed to localize small nonpalpable nodules within the subcutaneous fat as well as lesions within the deeper soft tissues. It can also be used for

A Radar-Based Smart Sensor for Unobtrusive Elderly Monitoring in Ambient Assisted Living Applications.

Continuous in-home monitoring of older adults living alone aims to improve their quality of life and independence, by detecting early signs of illness and functional decline or emergency conditions. To meet requirements for technology acceptance by seniors (unobtrusiveness, non-intrusiveness, and privacy-preservation), this study presents and discusses a new smart sensor system for the detection of abnormalities during daily activities, based on ultra-wideband radar providing rich, not privacy-sensitive, information useful for sensing both cardiorespiratory and body movements, regardless of am

Locust displacing winds in eastern Australia reassessed with observations from an insect monitoring radar.

Based on previous investigations, adult Australian plague locusts are believed to migrate on warm nights (with evening temperatures >25 °C), provided daytime flight is suppressed by surface winds greater than the locusts' flight speed, which has been shown to be 3.1 m s-1. Moreover, adult locusts are believed to undertake briefer 'dispersal' flights on nights with evening temperature >20 °C. To reassess the utility of these conditions for forecasting locust flight, contingency tests were conducted comparing the nights selected on these bases (predicted nights) for the months of November, Janua

Estimation of Cardiopulmonary Parameters From Ultra Wideband Radar Measurements Using the State Space Method.

Ultra wideband (UWB) Doppler radar has many biomedical applications, including remote diagnosis of cardiovascular disease, triage and real-time personnel tracking in rescue missions. It uses narrow pulses to probe the human body and detect tiny cardiopulmonary movements by spectral analysis of the backscattered electromagnetic (EM) field. With the help of super-resolution spectral algorithms, UWB radar is capable of increased accuracy for estimating vital signs such as heart and respiration rates in adverse signal-to-noise conditions. A major challenge for biomedical radar systems is detecting

Shedding light with harmonic radar: Unveiling the hidden impacts of streetlights on moth flight behavior.

One of the most dramatic changes occurring on our planet is the ever-increasing extensive use of artificial light at night, which drastically altered the environment to which nocturnal animals are adapted. Such light pollution has been identified as a driver in the dramatic insect decline of the past years. One nocturnal species group experiencing marked declines are moths, which play a key role in food webs and ecosystem services such as plant pollination. Moths can be easily monitored within the illuminated area of a streetlight, where they typically exhibit disoriented behavior. Yet, little

Emergence of Undetectable Malaria Parasites: A Threat under the Radar amid the COVID-19 Pandemic?

Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) play a critical role in malaria diagnosis and control. The emergence of Plasmodium falciparum parasites that can evade detection by RDTs threatens control and elimination efforts. These parasites lack or have altered genes encoding histidine-rich proteins (HRPs) 2 and 3, the antigens recognized by HRP2-based RDTs. Surveillance of such parasites is dependent on identifying false-negative RDT results among suspected malaria cases, a task made more challenging during the current pandemic because of the overlap of symptoms between malaria and COVID-19, particularly in

Lightweight Gait-Based Person Identification via Transmit-Channel Differential Encoding with MIMO Millimeter-Wave Radar.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar enables non-contact human identification by exploiting gait micro-Doppler signatures without capturing visual imagery. Nevertheless, practical deployment encounters several critical challenges: strong torso echoes that obscure faint limb-motion features, channel-dependent responses caused by unconstrained walking styles, and computational limitations on edge hardware. This paper proposes a lightweight gait-based human identification method for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems, which integrates adaptive Gamma correction, multi-transmit-channel d

Recognition of Soccer Player Actions Using a Synchronized Multi-Camera and mm-Wave Radar Platform.

This paper presents a multimodal sensing approach for fine-grained soccer action recognition using synchronized mm-wave FMCW radar and multiview RGB cameras. A TI IWR1443BOOST FMCW radar and three Sony IMX296 global-shutter cameras were used to record seven soccer-related actions in different movement directions in an outdoor environment. Range-Doppler radar processing is applied to extract global mel features and CFAR-localized block representations of mel and radar spectrogram features to capture both coarse and fine micro-Doppler characteristics. Camera features are derived from bounding bo

Pediatric Corpulence Assessment Using Ultra-Wideband Radar Imaging System: A Novel Approach in Tissue Characterization.

This article proposes an ex-vivo method to estimate the dielectric properties and thickness of adipose tissue in the human body. Based on the electrical properties of adipose tissue, obesity levels will be assessed. This approach consists of two steps: 1) data acquisition by an ultrawideband (UWB) time-domain radar and 2) genetic algorithm optimization of the intended goal function. This study considers a three-layered tissue model to mimic the surface of the human abdomen. The experimental phantom consists of a pork skin layer followed by pork fat, then ground pork to emulate the muscle tissu

A Novel FMCW Radar Scheme with Millimeter Motion Detection Capabilities Suitable for Cardio-Respiratory Monitoring.

A new modulation scheme for frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radars with millimeter-level target motion detection capability is presented. The proposed radar scheme is free from the synchronization constraint and exhibits low sensitivity to internal parasitic mutual coupling, thus significantly reducing its design complexity without worsening its performance in terms of accuracy and operating ranges. Alternatively to canonical FMCW radars, which exploit chirp signals with triangular or sawtooth-like frequency variation, a radar based on a sinusoidal frequency modulation, which does n

Nonuniform Doppler extraction-enhanced multichannel extensive cancellation algorithm for passive radar using Iridium satellite signals.

Passive radar (PR) relies on receiving signals reflected from targets by other existing noncooperative radiation sources, which are broadly divided into ground- and space-based categories, to achieve target detection and tracking. In the context of space-based PR, this paper proposes a PR using the Iridium satellite signal, which is a low-orbit satellite communication signal with global coverage. With an improved detection range and accredited ambiguity function, a PR using the Iridium satellite signal can address the issues of limited terrestrial coverage for ground-based PR and insufficient
