A Case of Local Radiation Injury in the Creation of Lichtenburg Art.

Despite the fact that there may be no immediate outward signs of tissue destruction, the ultimate damage caused by radiation exposure is immediate and may be predicted based on the source, length of exposure, and type of tissue to which the radiation is exposed. Although predictable, difficulty in caring for these patients stems from the multiple sources of radiation to which people may be exposed, the various parts of the body exposed, the dose involved, the rarity of the condition, and a general lack of knowledge on the part of treating physicians. Due to these factors, there is significant

GSTP1 as a novel target in radiation induced lung injury.

The glutathione S-transferase P1(GSTP1) is an isoenzyme in the glutathione-S transferases (GSTs) enzyme system, which is the most abundant GSTs expressed in adult lungs. Recent research shows that GSTP1 is closely related to the regulation of cell oxidative stress, inhibition of cell apoptosis and promotion of cytotoxic metabolism. Interestingly, there is evidence that GSTP1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) 105Ile/Val related to the risk of radiation induced lung injury (RILI) development, which strongly suggests that GSTP1 is closely associated with the occurrence and development of RILI

Radiation-induced skin injury: pathogenesis, treatment, and management.

Radiation-induced skin injury (RSI) refers to a frequently occurring complication of radiation therapy. Nearly 90% of patients having received radiation therapy underwent moderate-to-severe skin reactions, severely reducing patients' quality of life and adversely affecting their disease treatment. No gold standard has been formulated for RSIs. In the present study, the mechanism of RSI and topical medications was discussed. Besides, this study can be referenced for clinicians to treat RSIs to guide subsequent clinical medicine.

Mitigation of radiation-induced hematopoietic system injury by melatonin.

BACKGROUND: Increased risks of exposure to accidental radiation events are a concern in today's world. Radiation terror, nuclear explosion, as well as accidental exposure to radioactive sources in some industries pose a threat to the life of exposed persons. Studies have been conducted using some low-toxic agents to mitigate radiation toxicity and increase survival probability for exposed people. In the current study, we aimed to show the mitigation of radiation-induced mortality and bone marrow toxicity using postirradiation treatment with melatonin. METHOD: Mice whole bodies were exposed to

Targeting of cellular redox metabolism for mitigation of radiation injury.

Accidental exposure to ionizing radiation is a serious concern to human life. Studies on the mitigation of side effects following exposure to accidental radiation events are ongoing. Recent studies have shown that radiation can activate several signaling pathways, leading to changes in the metabolism of free radicals including reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO). Cellular and molecular mechanisms show that radiation can cause disruption of normal reduction/oxidation (redox) system. Mitochondria malfunction following exposure to radiation and mutations in mitochondria DNA (mtDNA

[Research progress on macrophage in radiation induced lung injury].

Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI), including acute radiation pneumonitis and chronic radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis (RIPF), is a side effect of radiotherapy for lung cancer and esophageal cancer. Pulmonary macrophages, as a kind of natural immune cells maintaining lung homeostasis, play a key role in the whole pathological process of RILI. In the early stage of RILI, classically activated M1 macrophages secrete proinflammatory cytokines to induce inflammation and produce massive reactive oxygen species (ROS) through ROS-induced cascade to further impair lung tissue. In the later stage

[Dilemma and strategy in surgery of chronic radiation intestinal injury].

Chronic radiation intestinal injury denotes the repeated and prolonged damage of intestine caused by radiotherapy to pelvic malignancy, which usually occurs after three months of radiotherapy. Surgical intervention is indicated when the progressive intestinal injury leads to the development of massive intestinal hemorrhage, obstruction, perforation, fistula and other late complications. However, there is no consensus on the surgical procedures. We illustrate the dilemma in surgical treatment from the points of pathological mechanism and the frequent sites of radiation intestinal injury. Meanwh

Understanding Ultraviolet Radiation Dorsal Foot Injury at the Beach.

BACKGROUND: Efforts made to protect the dorsal aspect of the foot are currently unknown. We sought to determine whether beachgoers protect the dorsal aspect of their feet as frequently as other anatomic sites. METHODS: A convenience sample of Galveston, Texas, beachgoers completed anonymous surveys to assess whether the dorsal foot was at risk for ultraviolet radiation (UV-R) injury. Additional information collected included demographics and general knowledge about skin cancer to determine if these variables were significantly correlated with dorsal foot protection from UV-R injury. RESULTS:

[Standardized treatment of chronic radiation-induced bowel injury].

Radiation-induced bowel injury is a common complication of radiation therapy for pelvic malignancy. Given the huge number of patients diagnosed with pelvic malignancy, the number of patients diagnosed with radiation-induced bowel injury increased year by year, which put a great burden on the clinical diagnosis and treatment of radiation-induced bowel injury. In particular, chronic radiation-induced bowel injury, which is manifested in the process of prolonged, repeated and progressive aggravation, seriously affects the physical and mental health of patients and makes clinical diagnosis and tre

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for late radiation tissue injury.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a significant global health problem. Radiotherapy is a treatment for many cancers and about 50% of people having radiotherapy will be long-term survivors. Some will experience late radiation tissue injury (LRTI) developing months or years later. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been suggested as a treatment for LRTI based upon the ability to improve the blood supply to these tissues. It is postulated that HBOT may result in both healing of tissues and the prevention of problems following surgery. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of HBOT for treating or pr

Mitigation of lung injury after accidental exposure to radiation.

There is a serious need to develop effective mitigators against accidental radiation exposures. In radiation accidents, many people may receive nonuniform whole-body or partial-body irradiation. The lung is one of the more radiosensitive organs, demonstrating pneumonitis and fibrosis that are believed to develop at least partially because of radiation-induced chronic inflammation. Here we addressed the crucial questions of how damage to the lung can be mitigated and whether the response is affected by irradiation to the rest of the body. We examined the widely used dietary supplement genistein

Cytokine expression in radiation-induced delayed cerebral injury.

Radiation-induced delayed brain injury is a well-documented complication of both standard external beam radiation (teletherapy) and interstitial brachytherapy; however, the cause of this damage has not been determined. Cytokines and growth factors are important regulatory proteins controlling the growth and differentiation of normal and malignant glial cells, which have been implicated in the tissue response to radiation injury. Six snap-frozen brain biopsies showing radiation injury were obtained from four patients harboring malignant gliomas who underwent either postoperative external beam a

Transposition of the greater omentum in the prevention and treatment of radiation injury.

The greater omentum provides a tissue flap that can readily be transposed for surgical reconstruction both inside and outside the abdominal cavity. To prevent radiation enteritis, an omental sling or envelope can be constructed at the end of an abdominal operation to displace small bowel from the pelvis prior to radiotherapy. The immunological and angiogenic properties of the omentum are particularly useful when reconstruction is required in a region of late radiation injury. Indications for omental transposition in this context include reinforcement of anastomoses, pelvic fistula repair, ches

Radiation-induced ocular injury in the dog: a histological study.

Radiation-induced ocular injury secondary to treatment of nasal cancer occurs in humans and animals. Dogs with nasal carcinomas were randomized to receive 36 to 67.5 Gy in fractionated doses given in 4 weeks using a 6 MV linear accelerator. Ophthalmic examinations were performed according to a predetermined protocol and eyes were removed for histologic examination when dogs were euthanatized. The eye in the radiation field exhibited greater injury than the contralateral eye with nasal areas of the globe having more severe lesions than temporal areas. Lesions occurred in all dogs and at all dos

Treatment of radiation-induced tissue injury by hyperbaric oxygen.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy appears to be a beneficial adjunctive treatment modality in the management of radionecrosis of bone and soft tissue in the head and neck. The mechanism of such wound healing enhancement appears to be related to oxygen stimulation of fibroblastic activity and neovasculation. In this pilot study, involving 13 cases of refractory mandibular radionecrosis treated with hyperbaric oxygen, complete healing of soft tissue disease with covering of exposed bone has been noted in seven cases 11 to 27 months posttreatment; transient healing was seen in three cases; moderate to ma
