Protection of pig epidermis against radiation-induced damage by the infusion of BW12C.

BW12C, which was developed as an agent for the treatment of sickle cell anaemia, increases the binding of oxygen to haemoglobin and hence reduces the availability of oxygen to tissues. Due to these changes in oxygen availability BW12C could act as a protector against radiation-induced injury to normal tissues. In this study the potential value of BW12C, as a radioprotector, was studied in the irradiated epidermis of the pig. The infusion of BW12C caused an instant left shift of the oxygen dissociation curve, an effect that lasted for approximately 1.5 h. This left shift in the oxygen dissociat

Protection from acute exposure to ultraviolet radiation by ultraviolet-absorbing RGP contact lenses.

One eye in each of 12 female pigmented rabbits was irradiated with UVB while wearing an EqualensR I rigid gas-permeable contact lens. The other eye served as a control. The irradiance level was 625 microW cm-2 (285-315 nm total bandpass) with exposure times up to 2364 s. Eyes were evaluated 24 h and 48 h after exposure by biomicroscopy and pachometry, and later by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The contact lens was found to protect the central cornea from radiant exposures up to 60 times threshold. The exposed areas of cornea showed characteristic ultraviolet damage with an arc of demarca

Dual-functional guanosine-based hydrogel: high-efficiency protection in radiation-induced oral mucositis.

Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is the most common adverse effect experienced by cancer patients following radiotherapy; however, effective clinical treatments remain insufficiently recognized. In this study, a guanosine-polyvinyl alcohol (G-PVA) supramolecular hydrogel was developed using a one-pot synthesis method. The G-PVA hydrogel demonstrated remarkable wet adhesion properties measuring 74.16 kPa (±3.53 kPa), biocompatibility and shape adaptability, making it suitable for the dynamic conditions of the oral cavity. Under radiation exposure, the G-PVA hydrogel not only mitigated ox

Uncovering the efficacy of a natural homemade sunscreen in protection from ultraviolet radiation.

In Australia, skin cancer has the highest incidence of all cancer types, where Therapeutic Goods Association-approved, broad-spectrum sunscreens are recommended to prevent skin carcinogenesis. Commercial sunscreen ingredients, however, have been associated with negative impacts on human health, animal health and the environment. Together, the perceived harmful effects of commercial sunscreens have driven a trend towards home formulation of natural sunscreens, recipes for which are widely available online. Scientific evidence to support the efficacy of natural sunscreens, however, is lacking. W

Effectiveness of radiation protection systems in the cardiac catheterization laboratory: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: As numbers and complexity of percutaneous coronary interventions are constantly increasing, optimal radiation protection is required to ensure operator safety. Suspended radiation protection systems (SRPS) and protective scatter-radiation absorbing drapes (PAD) are novel methods to mitigate fluoroscopic scattered radiation exposure. The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness regarding radiation protection of a SRPS and a PAD in comparison with conventional protection. METHODS: A total of 229 cardiac catheterization procedures with SRPS (N = 73), PAD (N = 82) and sta

Involvement of eNAMPT/TLR4 signaling in murine radiation pneumonitis: protection by eNAMPT neutralization.

Therapeutic strategies to prevent or reduce the severity of radiation pneumonitis are a serious unmet need. We evaluated extracellular nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (eNAMPT), a damage-associated molecular pattern protein (DAMP) and Toll-Like Receptor 4 (TLR4) ligand, as a therapeutic target in murine radiation pneumonitis. Radiation-induced murine and human NAMPT expression was assessed in vitro, in tissues (IHC, biochemistry, imaging), and in plasma. Wild type C57Bl6 mice (WT) and Nampt+/- heterozygous mice were exposed to 20Gy whole thoracic lung irradiation (WTLI) with or without w

Metformin as a Radiation Modifier; Implications to Normal Tissue Protection and Tumor Sensitization.

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, ionizing radiation is used for several applications in medicine, industry, agriculture, and nuclear power generation. Besides the beneficial roles of ionizing radiation, there are some concerns about accidental exposure to radioactive sources. The threat posed by its use in terrorism is of global concern. Furthermore, there are several side effects to normal organs for patients who had undergone radiation treatment for cancer. Hence, the modulation of radiation response in normal tissues was one of the most important aims of radiobiology. Although, so far, several agents

New advances in protection against solar ultraviolet radiation in textiles for summer clothing.

Clothing is considered one of the most important tools for photoprotection against harmful solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR). The standard for sun-protective clothing is based on erythema despite other biological effects of UVR on the skin. We analyzed the potential protection against UVR in fabrics destined for summer clothing based on several action spectra. We examined 50 garments classified by type of fabric composition, structure of the fiber yarn and color. The ultraviolet protection factor was calculated based on fabric ultraviolet transmittance corrected for erythema according to the E

Protection against radiation-induced chromosome damage in mouse bone marrow by Ocimum sanctum.

The radioprotective effect of the leaf extract of Ocimum sanctum (Ocimum extract, OE) was investigated by taking chromosome aberrations as the end point. Adult Swiss mice were whole-body exposed to 1-6 Gy of gamma radiation with/without pretreatment with 10 mg/kg b.wt. of OE intraperitoneally for 5 consecutive days. Radiation was given 30 min after the last injection. Metaphase plates were prepared from femur marrow on days 1, 2, 7 and 14 post-treatment and the frequency of aberrant cells and individual aberrations were scored. OE alone did not have any significant effect on the chromosomes. M

Reduction in radiation-induced brain injury by use of pentobarbital or lidocaine protection.

To determine if barbiturates would protect brain at high doses of radiation, survival rates in rats that received whole-brain x-irradiation during pentobarbital- or lidocaine-induced anesthesia were compared with those of control animals that received no medication and of animals anesthetized with ketamine. The animals were shielded so that respiratory and digestive tissues would not be damaged by the radiation. Survival rates in rats that received whole-brain irradiation as a single 7500-rad dose under pentobarbital- or lidocaine-induced anesthesia was increased from between from 0% and 20% t

Health effects of ionizing radiation exposure in the brain: MELODI perspectives on potential implications of emerging evidence for radiation protection.

There is a growing body of epidemiological evidence for elevated risks of a variety of multifactorial diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Parkinson's disease and dementia) and cerebrovascular diseases (e.g., stroke) following radiation exposure of the brain. Implications of available scientific evidence for radiation protection need to be assessed, e.g., in terms of radiation effect classification (tissue reactions vs stochastic effects), dose and dose-rate effectiveness, target identification (at levels of cells, tissues and organs inside/outside the brain) for dose mon

[The classification of radiation protective agents as the reflection of the present state and development perspective, of current radiation pharmacology].

Pharmacological drugs which can reduce the radiation damage to the organism when applied in the nearest time before or after exposure to radiation can be referred to as radiation protective agents. The classification of radiation protective agents, which has been well established to date, is a reflection of the history of the formation and current state of radiation pharmacology: the most significant historical landmarks in the screening of radiation protective agents among different groups of pharmaceutical preparations and the formation of the theoretical knowledge about the mechanism for th

A narrative review of cancer risks in medical radiation workers across high- and low-dose practice eras: implications for radiation protection.

Medical radiation workers constitute the largest occupational group exposed to man-made ionising radiation, yet much of the evidence on cancer risk derives from early high-dose practice eras that differ substantially from contemporary conditions. This narrative review synthesises evidence from cohort studies of medical radiation workers across occupational exposure eras, with emphasis on epidemiologic approaches, observed cancer risk patterns, and sex-specific differences. Epidemiologic methods have evolved from proxy-based exposure indicators to quantitative dose-response modelling using exce

Evaluating Standard Shielding Versus Novel Enhanced Radiation Protection Devices in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced radiation protection devices (ERPDs) have the potential to reduce occupational risks in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. We aimed to investigate scatter radiation exposure to various cardiac catheterization laboratory members using 2 ERPDs. METHODS: We prospectively allocated cases to 3 different shielding conditions: standard shielding (group 1), EggNest Protect ERPD (group 2), and EggNest Complete ERPD (group 3). Real-time dosimetry was used to measure radiation exposure at 3 positions: primary operator (position 1), assistant (position 2), and circulating nurse
