Evidence on the treatment of distal radius fractures (DRF) in the elderly is lacking. Over the last decade new volar locking plates have increased in popularity as other means of treating DRF are pushed aside. No definitive evidence exists to support the use of volar locking plates especially among the elderly. There is some evidence that Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand-scores improve the first 3-6 months after treatment with volar locking plates only to become insignificant after 12 months. This article examines the evidence of the different modes of treatment.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Distal forearm fractures in children have excellent remodeling potential. The current literature states that 15° is the maximum acceptable angulation limit, though studies focusing on remodeling capacity above this value are lacking. PURPOSE: To discuss the evidence base behind treatment of pediatric distal radius fractures.
METHODS: We identified randomized controlled trials addressing the treatment of children with torus fractures, minimally displaced fractures, and displaced fractures of the distal radius.

Stretching exercises are an important part of recovery after sustaining a fracture of the distal radius. However, from the patient's perspective, painful stretching exercises can be counterintuitive after injury. Stretching exercises are straightforward and do not require a significant amount of coaching. It is ultimately the protectiveness, passivity, and sometimes a sense of futility that require coaching. The key for the provider is to empathize with the difficult and counterintuitive nature of the recovery process.

Our study was designed to establish whether the degree of osteoporosis of the distal forearm affects the outcome of distal radius fractures in elderly women. Common misconceptions about distal radius fractures result in undertreatment of many fractures, particularly in an active population. Loss of reduction of the fracture may cause a symptomatic malunion. Fourteen patients with an average age of 39 years (range, 21-65 years) underwent reconstructive procedures for radial malunions. Forty-three comminuted fractures of the proximal radius and ulna in 34 patients were treated with operative stabilization using AO/ASIF techniques. Eight cases of calcification following anterior dislocation of the head of the radius are described. It was demonstrated as early as 2 weeks after injury and in 7 cases appeared in the form of a shell on the volar aspect of the head. The other type exhibits a cuff of calcification related to the radial neck. Parallel cases are drawn from a literature review, and the distinction is made between calcification in the disrupted annular ligament/capsule or oblique cord and myositis ossificans. Regression in several cases may be a consequence of open reduction.

The author describes the clinical picture of dislocation of the radial bone head depending on the side of dislocation in 18 children aged from 3 to 14 years. Osteosynthesis of fractures of the head of the radius is regarded with disfavour by many ortophaedic surgeons, who prefer excision of the fractured head. However, osteosynthesis is capable of producing excellent results, as long as the correct indications are observed and it is carried out with minimal trauma, and by simple, small methods of synthesis. Simultaneous fractures of the distal radius and the scaphoid are uncommon. A study of seven male patients who had sustained this fracture combination revealed the most frequent cause of the injury was a fall from a height.
