Adiponectin is an insulin-sensitizing adipokine with protective effects against a cluster of obesity-related metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. The adipokine exerts its insulin-sensitizing effects by alleviation of obesity-induced ectopic lipid accumulation, lipotoxicity and chronic inflammation, as well as by direct cross-talk with insulin signaling cascades. Adiponectin and insulin signaling pathways converge at the adaptor protein APPL1. On the one hand, APPL1 interacts with adiponectin receptors and mediates both metabolic and vascular actions of adiponectin through activation of AMP-

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) predisposes to obesity and adipose dysfunction. We previously demonstrated IUGR-induced increased visceral adipose deposition and dysregulated expression of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor- γ 2 (PPAR γ 2) in male adolescent rats, prior to the onset of obesity. In other studies, activation of PPAR γ increases subcutaneous adiponectin expression and normalizes visceral adipose deposition. We hypothesized that maternal supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a PPAR γ agonist, would normalize IUGR adipose deposition in association with inc

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder that can cause infertility. This experimental study was conducted to elucidate the role of adiponectin signaling in rats with PCOS treated with exenatide. Twenty-eight adult female Wistar rats were divided into four groups of seven. The normal group did not receive any drug. The PCOS+vehicle (Veh) group received estradiol valerate to induce PCOS, then was divided into PCOS +E50 and PCOS+E100 groups and treated with 50 or 100 mg/kg doses of exenatide, respectively. The mRNA expression of adiponectin and adiponectin re

Adipokines play essential roles in regulating a range of biological processes, but growing evidence indicates that they are also fundamental in immunological mechanisms and, primarily, inflammatory responses. Adipokines mediate their actions through specific receptors. However, although adipokine receptors are widely distributed in many cell and tissue types, limited data are available on their expression in mast cells (MCs) and, consequently, adipokine's significance in the modulation of MC activity within the tissues. In this study, we demonstrate that rat peritoneal MCs constitutively expre

BACKGROUND: In human pregnancy, a correct placentation depends on trophoblast proliferation, differentiation, migration and invasion. These processes are highly regulated by placental hormones, growth factors and cytokines. Recently, we have shown that adiponectin, an adipokine, has anti-proliferative effects on trophoblastic cells. Here, we complete this study by demonstrating that adiponectin modulates BeWo and human villous cytotrophoblast cell differentiation.
RESULTS: We showed that hCG secretion was up-regulated by adiponectin treatment in both BeWo cells and human cytotrophoblasts from

Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of heart failure (HF). This is commonly termed diabetic cardiomyopathy and is often characterised by increased cardiac fibrosis, pathological hypertrophy, increased oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum stress as well as diastolic dysfunction. Adiponectin is a cardioprotective adipokine that is downregulated in settings of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity. Furthermore, both adiponectin receptors (AdipoR1 and R2) are also downregulated in these settings which further results in impaired cardiac adiponectin signalling and reduced cardioprotection. In

Adiponectin is an adipocyte-specific factor, first described in 1995. Over the past two decades, numerous studies have elucidated the physiological functions of adiponectin in obesity, diabetes, inflammation, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease. Adiponectin, elicited through cognate receptors, suppresses glucose production in the liver and enhances fatty acid oxidation in skeletal muscle, which together contribute to a beneficial metabolic action in whole body energy homeostasis. Beyond its role in metabolism, adiponectin also protects cells from apoptosis and reduces inflammation in v

Obesity is a major health problem, contributing to the development of various diseases with aging. In humans, obesity has been associated with reduced testosterone production and subfertility. Adipose tissue is an important source of hormones having influences on both metabolism and reproduction. Among them, the production and secretion of adiponectin is inversely correlated to the severity of obesity. The purpose of this review of literature is to present the current state of knowledge on adiponectin research to determine whether this hormone affects reproduction in men. Surprisingly, evidenc

Adiponectin is an antidiabetic endogenous adipokine that plays a protective role against the unfavorable metabolic sequelae of obesity. Recent evidence suggests a sinister link between hypoadiponectinemia and development of insulin resistance/type 2 diabetes (T2D). Adiponectin's insulin-sensitizing property is mediated through the specific adiponectin receptors R1 and R2, which activate the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) α pathways. AdipoAI is a novel synthetic analogue of endogenous adiponectin with possibly similar pharmacological ef

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) 2A receptors contribute to the effects of 5-HT on platelet aggregation and vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, and are reportedly involved in decreases in plasma levels of adiponectin, an adipokine, in diabetic subjects. Here, we report that systemic administration of sarpogrelate, a 5-HT2A receptor antagonist, suppressed appetite and increased hypothalamic pro-opiomelanocortin and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript, corticotropin releasing hormone, 5-HT2C, and 5-HT1B receptor gene expression. INTRODUCTION: Adiponectin receptors are expressed in the hypothalamus, brainstem, and basal ganglia. Experimentally, adiponectin was immunopositive in the phosphorylated α-synuclein-positive Lewy bodies in the brain of individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD), and treatment with recombinant adiponectin suppressed the aggregation of α-synuclein. The close relationship between adiponectin and PD is suggested.
METHODS: We assessed whether adiponectin levels may increase in patients with PD and differ in individuals with other neurodegenerative diseases. Blood samples were stored at - 70 °C. Adi

Adiponectin levels are associated with anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and kisspeptin levels in non-ovarian tissues. The objective of the present study was to investigate the association between adiponectin and the genes important for ovarian follicular development and ovarian reserve, specifically AMH and kisspeptin, and their corresponding receptors. In the first experiment, the mRNA levels of anti-Müllerian hormone (amh) and its receptor (Amhr2), as well as those of kisspeptin (Kiss1) and its receptor (Kiss1r), were quantified by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis in the

Food intake is regulated by vagal afferent signals from the stomach. Adiponectin, secreted primarily from adipocytes, also has a role in regulating food intake. However, the involvement of vagal afferents in this effect remains to be established. We aimed to determine if adiponectin can modulate gastric vagal afferent (GVA) satiety signals and further whether this is altered in high fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity. Female C57BL/6J mice were fed either a standard laboratory diet (SLD) or a HFD for 12weeks. Plasma adiponectin levels were assayed, and the expression of adiponectin in the gastric m

Adiponectin can participate in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism, energy regulation, immune response, resistance to inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. Studies in rodents demonstrated that the small molecule compound adiponectin receptor agonist AdipoRon could activate the adiponectin receptor and played the same biological role as adiponectin. To explore the influence and regulation of AdipoRon on lipid metabolism disorder in Huoyan goose liver, in this study, goslings were fed a high-fat diet and then administered different dosages of AdipoRon. Subsequently, goose bod

Higher body mass index and adiposopathy have been associated with increased risk of hematologic malignancies such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, myeloproliferative disorders, Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and myelodysplastic syndromes. Adiponectin is a multimeric protein of the white adipose tissue presenting anti-inflammatory, insulin-sensitizing, anti-atherogenic, cardioprotective, and anti-neoplastic properties. Its anti-neoplastic actions are manifested via two mechanisms: (i) direct action on tumor cells by enhancing receptor-mediated signaling pathways and (ii) indirect action by
