Criminal recidivism and mortality among patients discharged from a forensic medium secure hospital.

BACKGROUND: One of the goals in forensic psychiatric care is to reduce the risk of recidivism, but current knowledge about the general outcome of forensic psychiatric treatment is limited. AIMS: To analyse the rate of criminal recidivism and mortality after discharge in a sample of patients sentenced to forensic psychiatric treatment in a Swedish county. METHODS: All offenders in Örebro County, Sweden, sentenced to forensic psychiatric treatment and discharged during 1992-2007 were included: 80 males and eight females. Follow-up data was retrieved from the Swedish National Council for Crime

Crime-Specific Recidivism in Criminal Justice Clients with Substance Use-A Cohort Study.

Criminal recidivism is a major global concern. There is a well-known association between substance use disorders and offending. Yet, little is known about crime-specific recidivism. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between specific substance use and crime-specific recidivism. The study is based on 4207 Swedish prison clients with substance use assessed with Addiction Severity Index interviews between 2001 and 2006. Clients were followed for an average of 2.7 years. Risk factors for criminal recidivism were assessed with the Cox regression analysis. Sixty-eight percent

Examining Sanction Type and Drug Offender Recidivism: A Register-Based Study in Finland.

Nordic countries incarcerate offenders at much lower rates in comparison with incarceration rates in the United States, and reincarcerate fewer people per capita. Noncustodial alternatives to sanctions, including fines and community service, are used extensively in Finland to reduce negative effects of institutionalization and subsequent disadvantage caused by incarceration. The nature of drug-involved offenders within the Finnish system is reviewed in light of current research about the effectiveness of incarceration and deterrence-based approaches for drug offenders. Employing a 2014 sample

Dynamic risk factors reassessed regularly after release from incarceration predict imminent violent recidivism.

OBJECTIVE: In community-based corrections, reassessment of dynamic risk factors improves the prediction of recidivism relative to initial risk assessment at the time of release. However, there is less evidence for predictions of violent recidivism. We examined whether reassessment proximity or aggregation of reassessments improved the prediction of imminent violence in a sample of paroled individuals on community supervision. HYPOTHESES: We hypothesized that reassessment of dynamic risk would better predict violent recidivism than initial risk assessment at the time of release. Examination of

Characteristics of repeated recidivism in surgical cases of cholesteatoma requiring canal wall reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE: Few reports discuss the characteristics of repeated recidivism of cholesteatoma. We describe the clinical characteristics of patients with cholesteatoma who experienced at least two recidivism episodes after initial surgery for cholesteatoma requiring canal wall reconstruction. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 11 patients who underwent surgery for cholesteatoma with canal wall reconstruction at our department between April 2008 and March 2018 and subsequently experienced two relapses that necessitated revision surgery involving tympanomastoidectomy with canal reconstruct

Falling Again? Falls in Geriatric Adults-Risk Factors and Outcomes Associated With Recidivism.

BACKGROUND: The elderly population is at increased risk of fall-related readmissions (FRRs). This study is aimed to identify the factors predictive of repeat falls and to analyze the associated outcomes. METHODS: We studied the Nationwide Readmission Database for the year 2010 and identified the patients (≥65 years) who were admitted after falls, and from that subset, further analyzed patients with ≥1 FRRs. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze continuous and categorical variables. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify predictors of readmission in geriatric patients aft

Case management helps prevent criminal justice recidivism for people with serious mental illness.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss how case management can decrease recidivism for people with serious mental illness (SMI) because people with SMI are at high risk for incarceration and recidivism. Design/methodology/approach Examples of successful case management models for formerly incarcerated individuals with SMI found through a secondary analysis of qualitative data and an analysis of the literature are presented. Findings Currently, no international, national, or statewide guidelines exist to ensure that formerly incarcerated individuals with SMI receive case management upo

Development and Validation of the Juvenile Sexual Offense Recidivism Risk Assessment Tool-II.

This article describes the development and initial validation of the Juvenile Sexual Offense Recidivism Risk Assessment Tool-II (JSORRAT-II). Potential predictor variables were extracted from case file information for an exhaustive sample of 636 juveniles in Utah who sexually offended between 1990 and 1992. Simultaneous and hierarchical logistic regression analyses were used to identify the group of variables that was most predictive of subsequent juvenile sexual recidivism. A simple categorical scoring system was applied to these variables without meaningful loss of accuracy in the developmen

The Effects of Halfway Houses on Criminal Recidivism: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Halfway houses operate as a form of community supervision, offering a unique opportunity for individuals who have offended to receive housing, support, and other resources to aid in navigating the challenges of re-entry from closed custody. Despite being controversial in the eyes of the public, they have long been viewed by stakeholders as a worthwhile intervention. However, existing literature presents mixed findings on their utility. The current study provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of nine studies providing 17 effect sizes on the effects of halfway houses on recidivism. Findi

Comparing Recidivism of Sexual and Nonsexual Offenders: The Role of Humanist, Spiritual, and Religious Involvement.

Some research has considered whether faith-informed programs help persons with a previous incarceration navigate a life away from crime. Few studies considered whether offense category moderates this relationship. Building upon studies that found a strong association between a prior sexual conviction and participation in religion in prison, we assess whether time spent in humanist, spiritual, and religious (HSR) programs in prison is associated with reconviction, separately for persons convicted of a sex offense and any other offense. Our results revealed that a higher level of participation i

A National Study of Veterans Treatment Court Participants: Who Benefits and Who Recidivates.

Although there are now over 400 veterans treatment courts (VTCs) in the country, there have been few studies on participant outcomes in functional domains. Using national data on 7931 veterans in the Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Justice Outreach program across 115 VA sites who entered a VTC from 2011 to 2015, we examined the housing, employment, income, and criminal justice outcomes of VTC participants; and identified veteran characteristics predictive of outcomes. VTC participants spent an average of nearly a year in the program and 14% experienced a new incarceration. From program admissio

Age, actuarial risk, and long-term recidivism in a national sample of sex offenders.

Age at release has become an increasing focus of study with regard to evaluating risk in the sex offender population and has been repeatedly shown to be an important component of the risk assessment equation. This study constitutes an extension of a study of sex offender outcomes prepared for the Evaluation Branch, Correctional Service of Canada. The entire cohort of 2,401 male federally incarcerated sexual offenders who reached their warrant expiry date (WED) within 1997/1998, 1998/1999, and 1999/2000 fiscal years were reviewed for the study. [Latzko surgery in recidivant vesicovaginal fistulae. Two case reports and literature review].

Recurrent vesicovaginal fistulae represent a clinical problem of the utmost importance due to the impact on the patients' quality of life. The current standard of treatment for this problem is surgical, with an abdominal approach, notwithstanding, may authors state that this repair should be done with the technique and approach that the surgeon feels most comfortable. We have successfully treated two patients with recurrent vesicovaginal fistulae using a vaginal approach, therefore we suggest it as a viable alternative in the treatment of this condition. We present two case reports an literatu

Recidivism in HIV-infected incarcerated adults: influence of the lack of a high school education.

Recidivism is a pervasive problem facing the incarcerated. Incarcerated persons who are human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected often have multiple risk factors associated with initial incarceration and recidivism, in particular, injection drug use. Yet, some jails provide case management for HIV-infected inmates to provide continuity of health care, which might have positive effects on reentry into the community. We sought to measure recidivism and factors related to recidivism in an HIV-infected cohort in an urban county jail with an active case management program. Fifty-two inmates surv

Exploring Recidivism in Cardiac Surgical ICU: Can this Understanding Translate to Enhanced Patient Outcomes?

OBJECTIVE: The need for reinstitution of intensive care unit (ICU) care ("recidivism") in post-cardiac surgery patients is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, resource use, and healthcare costs. Recidivism is propounded as a quality indicator of ICU care. There is a paucity of studies from India regarding cardiac surgical ICU readmissions, their outcomes, and risk factors. METHODS: Nested case-control study including 1,711 consecutive adult patients who underwent cardiac surgery over a two-year period at a tertiary care institute. The patients were grouped into recidival (R) and c

Improving Our Risk Communication: Standardized Risk Levels for Brief Assessment of Recidivism Risk-2002R.

A Five-Level Risk and Needs system has been proposed as a common language for standardizing the meaning of risk levels across risk/need tools used in corrections. Study 1 examined whether the Five-Levels could be applied to BARR-2002R (N = 2,390), an actuarial tool for general recidivism. Study 2 examined the construct validity of BARR-2002R risk levels in two samples of individuals with a history of sexual offending (N = 1,081). Study 1 found reasonable correspondence between BARR-2002R scores and four of the five standardized risk levels (no Level V). Study 2 found that the profiles of indiv

Evaluating hearing outcome, recidivism and complications in cholesteatoma surgery using the ChOLE classification system.

PURPOSE: To establish a standardized reporting system of cholesteatoma, the ChOLE classification has recently been introduced. We here aimed to systematically investigate the association between the ChOLE classification and (i) hearing, (ii) recidivism rate, and (iii) postoperative complications. These data may increase the utility of the ChOLE classification in clinical practice and research by stratifying patients according to expected outcomes or risks for complications. METHODS: In this prospective multicentric study, we included adult patients undergoing tympanomastoid surgery due to cho
