Effect of corticosteroid treatment on the recovery of pulmonary function in farmer's lung.

The effect of corticosteroid treatment on the course of farmer's lung (FL) was studied in 36 patients randomly allocated in a double-blind placebo-controlled study. All patients were in the acute stage of the disease and had had the first diagnosed attack of FL. Twenty patients were given prednisolone treatment for 8 wk. Sixteen patients received an 8-wk placebo treatment. One patient was withdrawn from the analysis when she terminated corticosteroid treatment because of side effects. After 1 month of treatment there was a significant difference (p = 0.03) in DLCO between the treatment groups.

Neuraminidase inhibition promotes the collective migration of neurons and recovery of brain function.

In the injured brain, new neurons produced from endogenous neural stem cells form chains and migrate to injured areas and contribute to the regeneration of lost neurons. However, this endogenous regenerative capacity of the brain has not yet been leveraged for the treatment of brain injury. Here, we show that in healthy brain chains of migrating new neurons maintain unexpectedly large non-adherent areas between neighboring cells, allowing for efficient migration. In instances of brain injury, neuraminidase reduces polysialic acid levels, which negatively regulates adhesion, leading to increase

Recovery of vascular function after exposure to a single bout of segmental vibration.

Work rotation schedules may be used to reduce the negative effects of vibration on vascular function. This study determined how long it takes vascular function to recover after a single exposure to vibration in rats (125 Hz, acceleration 5 g). The responsiveness of rat-tail arteries to the vasoconstricting factor UK14304, an α2C-adrenoreceptor agonist, and the vasodilating factor acetylcholine (ACh) were measured ex vivo 1, 2, 7, or 9 d after exposure to a single bout of vibration. Vasoconstriction induced by UK14304 returned to control levels after 1 d of recovery. However, re-dilation induce

Recovery of function in a myogenic mouse model of spinal bulbar muscular atrophy.

With this paper, we deliberately challenge the prevailing neurocentric theory of the etiology of spinal bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA). We offer data supporting an alternative view that androgen receptor (AR) acts in skeletal muscles to cause the symptoms of SBMA. While SBMA has been linked to a CAG repeat expansion in the AR gene and mutant AR is presumed to act in motoneurons to cause SBMA, we find that over-expression of wild type AR solely in skeletal muscle fibers results in the same androgen-dependent disease phenotype as when mutant AR is broadly expressed. Like other recent SBMA mouse

Prognostic value of FMRI in recovery of hand function in subcortical stroke patients.

The first objective of the study was to determine whether functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal was correlated with motor performance at different stages of poststroke recovery. The second objective was to assess the existence of prognostic factors for recovery in early functional MR images. Eight right-handed patients with pure motor deficit secondary to a first lacunar infarct localized on the pyramidal tract were included. This study concerned moderately impaired patients and recovery of handgrip strength and finger-tapping speed. The fMRI task was a calibrated flexion-extensi

[Effect of PSK on the recovery of macrophage function in tumor-bearing mice].

Chemotactic response of macrophage to PHA was depressed at early stages in allogeneic sarcoma 180-bearing ICR mice and syngeneic X5563-bearing C3H/He mice and their depressed response were restored to the normal levels by PSK. Macrophages-dependent resistance against Listeria monocytogenes at early phase of infection was depressed at the early stage after tumor inoculation. The depressed resistance was restored by PSK in X5563-bearing mice and by a combination of tumor resection and PSK in sarcoma 180-bearing mice.

Effect of MVF Combined with FES on Limb Function Recovery and Fine Function Rehabilitation of Hemiplegic Patients after ACI.

BACKGROUND: This study assesses the efficacy of mirror visual feedback (MVF) combined with functional electrical stimulation (FES) in rehabilitating limb function and fine motor skills in hemiplegic patients after acute cerebral infarction (ACI). Given the limited research in this area, this study aims to provide insights into innovative rehabilitation techniques. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted on 106 post-ACI hemiplegic patients, split into two groups of 53 each. One group received conventional training plus FES, while the other group underwent MVF combined with FES. Ke

Enhanced recovery in usual health care improves functional recovery after total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The success of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is determined by an effective surgical procedure as well as a well-organized clinical care pathway. Research has shown that day-of-surgery mobilization decreases length of stay (LOS) and complication rates. We developed, implemented, and evaluated a new clinical care pathway for patients undergoing TKA, that included early mobilization, using 'Lean Six Sigma (LSS)', with the aim of accelerating functional recovery and reducing LOS. METHODS: Data derived from physical therapy reports and LOS were compared between the old (n = 85) and the

Subsyndromal depressive symptoms after symptomatic recovery from mania are associated with delayed functional recovery.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether the presence of subsyndromal depressive symptoms predicted functional recovery after an acute manic episode. METHOD: Subjects with bipolar I disorder (according to the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV) who, at the time of symptomatic recovery from an acute manic or hypomanic episode, had a concomitant functional recovery (n = 52) were compared on demographic variables and mood symptoms to those who had symptomatically recovered but not functionally recovered (n = 33). Demographic and mood variables were examined in the nonfunctionally recovered g

Functional recovery in the elderly after major surgery: assessment of mobility recovery using wireless technology.

PURPOSE: Hospitalization and surgery in older patients often leads to a loss of strength, mobility, and functional capacity. We tested the hypothesis that wireless accelerometry could be used to measure mobility during hospital recovery after cardiac surgery. DESCRIPTION: We used an off-the-shelf fitness monitor to measure daily mobility in patients after surgery. Data were transmitted wirelessly, aggregated, and configured onto a provider-viewable dashboard. EVALUATION: Wireless monitoring of mobility after major surgery was easy and practical. There was a significant relationship between t

Bio-functionalized hydrogel patches of chitosan for the functional recovery of infarcted myocardial tissue.

The aim of this work was to assess the potential benefits of the enrichment of a chitosan hydrogel patch with secretome and its epicardial implantation in a murine model of chronic ischemia, focusing on the potential to restore the functional capacity of the heart. Thus, a hydrogel with a final polymer concentration of 3 % was prepared from chitosan with an acetylation degree of 24 % and then bio-functionalized with a secretome produced by mesenchymal stromal cells. The identification of proteins in the secretomes showed the presence of several proteins known to have beneficial effects on card

From Functional Mapping to Functional Recovery: The Emerging Role of Neuronavigated rTMS in Neurorehabilitation.

Background/Objectives: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been increasingly investigated as an adjunctive intervention in neurorehabilitation, particularly for motor recovery after stroke. However, conventional rTMS protocols remain limited by variability in target localization, inter-individual anatomical differences, lesion-related network reorganization, and limited reproducibility across treatment sessions. Neuronavigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (nrTMS) integrates structural neuroimaging with real-time coil tracking, enabling more precise and repro

The Role of Preinjury Cognitive Function in Future Traumatic Brain Injury and Functional Recovery.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive function (CF) is likely an important determinant of outcome after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and a predisposing factor for TBI. Previous research measures CF using estimates of pre-TBI CF. We studied the association between measured preinjury CF and functional outcome after injury and whether CF differed based on future TBI. METHODS: This retrospective, observational study assessed the role of preinjury CF in post-TBI functional outcome and the association with future TBI in Finnish male conscripts. We included patients with TBI treated at Helsinki Unive

Prognostic value of cognitive functioning for global functional recovery in first-episode schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: It has become widely accepted that cognitive deficits in schizophrenia are related to functional outcome. However, it remains to be seen whether these associations are relevant for predicting which cases will have a global functional recovery. In this study, we attempt to determine whether global functional recovery (integrating social and occupational outcomes) after first-episode schizophrenia (FES) can be predicted by cognitive variables. METHOD: A total of 131 FES patients with functional deficits (n=97) and functional recovery (n=34) as determined at 1-year follow-up were exa

Determinants of Early Renal Function Recovery After TIPS in Patients With Portal Hypertension.

Renal dysfunction frequently occurs in patients with portal hypertension and is linked to unfavorable clinical outcomes. Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) has the potential to enhance renal perfusion through portal decompression; however, factors predicting early improvement in renal function remain insufficiently defined. This retrospective, single-center study analyzed 188 consecutive patients with portal hypertension who underwent TIPS. Patients receiving renal replacement therapy or with baseline eGFR < 15 mL/min/1.73 m2 were excluded. The primary endpoint was early rena

The impact of age factors on postoperative limb function recovery in breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the timing and factors related to the complications such as lymphedema and the limiting of upper limb mobility can help in taking timely measures to prevent them and contribute to the functional recovery of patients after breast cancer surgery. We aimed to observe the relationship between age and postoperative complications of breast cancer and the improvement of limb function after early rehabilitation intervention in patients of different ages. METHODS: Sixty postoperative breast cancer patients were divided into three groups: young, middle-aged, and elderly. Rehab

Tactile stimulation promotes the recovery of motor function in rats with cerebral ischaemia.

OBJECTIVES: Tactile stimulation (TS) can promote neurogenesis and motor function recovery in rats with hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury, but the underlying mechanism is not clear. This study aimed to assess the effects of TS on neurological function in rats after cerebral ischaemia and explore the underlying mechanism. METHODS: Adult SD rats were randomly divided into a sham operation (SHAM) group, middle cerebral artery occlusion with tactile stimulation (TS-MCAO) group and middle cerebral artery occlusion with sedentary intervention (SED-MCAO) group.
