Alosetron is a potent and highly selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist which has been evaluated for the management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It blocked the fast 5HT3-mediated depolarisation of guinea-pig myenteric and submucosal neurons in vitro, with half-maximal inhibition at approximately 55 nmol/L. Alosetron attenuated the visceral nociceptive effect of rectal distension in conscious or anaesthetised dogs. This study compares pharmacokinetic parameters and colonic tissue concentrations of cyclosporine administered by olive-oil or water-retention enemas with conventional intravenous (i.v.) and oral dosing. Five medical students were enrolled in a prospective crossover study. All subjects received a single dose of cyclosporine on four separate occasions, once orally, once as an olive-oil enema, once as a water enema, and once i.v. Aquaporin 1 is a membrane water channel protein, which was studied here in spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) osmoregulatory tissues using a variety of techniques. The cloning of aquaporin 1 (AQP1) in the spiny dogfish identified a splice variant version of the mRNA/protein (AQP1SV1/AQP1SV1). OBJECTIVE: To report the long term results of abdominal rectopexy in patients with complete rectal prolapse.
DESIGN: Ongoing prospective randomised study.
SETTING: Department of Surgery, Westfälische Wilhelms-University, Münster.
SUBJECTS: 47 patients with complete rectal prolapse operated on between 1982 and 1989.
INTERVENTIONS: Abdominal rectopexy with absorbable mesh made of either polyglycolic acid (n = 17) or polyglactine 910 (n = 30).
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Postoperative complications and late results at a mean of 50.5 (range 2-102) months after operation.
