Reusable modular architecture enables flexible cognitive operations in the mouse brain and artificial recurrent networks.

Complex behaviors are built by combining simpler cognitive components. Computational modeling has shown that artificial neural networks can perform a variety of tasks by flexibly combining functional modules, each specialized for a specific computation, to construct a complex task. However, it is unknown whether reusable modular networks are found in the brain. Here we show that mice performing a delayed match-to-sample with delayed report task reuse neuronal subspaces that were specialized for stimulus processing and memory maintenance. These subspaces were reused during the task to represent

Modeling natural neural networks of decision making with artificial neural networks.

One main focus in neuroscience is to understand the relationship between decision making and various brain regions. Researchers use machine learning approaches to model the neural circuits of cerebral cortices, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. This review focuses on artificial neural networks (ANNs), particularly recurrent neural networks (RNNs), to model cortical functions for decision making. We first introduce the basic architecture of RNNs and explain how researchers compare the activity and circuits between artificial and biological networks. We also summarize how RNNs model the prefrontal

[Research on Early Identification of Bipolar Disorder Based on Multi-layer Perceptron Neural Network].

Multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network belongs to multi-layer feedforward neural network, and has the ability and characteristics of high intelligence. It can realize the complex nonlinear mapping by its own learning through the network. Bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness with high recurrence rate, high self-harm rate and high suicide rate. Most of the onset of the bipolar disorder starts with depressive episode, which can be easily misdiagnosed as unipolar depression and lead to a delayed treatment so as to influence the prognosis. The early identifica- tion of bipolar disorder

Explainable artificial intelligence for searching frequency characteristics in Parkinson's disease tremor.

The distinction between Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET) tremors is subtle, posing challenges in differentiation. To accurately classify the PD and ET, BiLSTM-based recurrent neural networks are employed to classify between normal patients (N), PD patients, and ET patients using accelerometry data on their lower arm (L), hand (H), and upper arm (U) as inputs. The trained recurrent neural network (RNN) has reached 80% accuracy. The neural network is analyzed using layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP) to understand the internal workings of the neural network. A novel explaina

The default mode network and recurrent depression: a neurobiological model of cognitive risk factors.

A neurobiological account of cognitive vulnerability for recurrent depression is presented based on recent developments of resting state neural networks. We propose that alterations in the interplay between task positive (TP) and task negative (TN) elements of the Default Mode Network (DMN) act as a neurobiological risk factor for recurrent depression mediated by cognitive mechanisms. In the framework, depression is characterized by an imbalance between TN-TP components leading to an overpowering of TP by TN activity. The TN-TP imbalance is associated with a dysfunctional internally-focused co

The Performance of an Artificial Neural Network Model in Predicting the Early Distribution Kinetics of Propofol in Morbidly Obese and Lean Subjects.

BACKGROUND: Induction of anesthesia is a phase characterized by rapid changes in both drug concentration and drug effect. Conventional mammillary compartmental models are limited in their ability to accurately describe the early drug distribution kinetics. Recirculatory models have been used to account for intravascular mixing after drug administration. However, these models themselves may be prone to misspecification. Artificial neural networks offer an advantage in that they are flexible and not limited to a specific structure and, therefore, may be superior in modeling complex nonlinear sys

Recurrent connectivity supports higher-level visual and semantic object representations in the brain.

Visual object recognition has been traditionally conceptualised as a predominantly feedforward process through the ventral visual pathway. While feedforward artificial neural networks (ANNs) can achieve human-level classification on some image-labelling tasks, it's unclear whether computational models of vision alone can accurately capture the evolving spatiotemporal neural dynamics. Here, we probe these dynamics using a combination of representational similarity and connectivity analyses of fMRI and MEG data recorded during the recognition of familiar, unambiguous objects. Modelling the visua

Linear matrix genetic programming as a tool for data-driven black-box control-oriented modeling in conditions of limited access to training data.

In the paper, a new evolutionary technique called Linear Matrix Genetic Programming (LMGP) is proposed. It is a matrix extension of Linear Genetic Programming and its application is data-driven black-box control-oriented modeling in conditions of limited access to training data. In LMGP, the model is in the form of an evolutionarily-shaped program which is a sequence of matrix operations. Since the program has a hidden state, running it for a sequence of input data has a similar effect to using well-known recurrent neural networks such as Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) or Gated Recurrent Unit (

Signal flow and pathways in response to early Wallerian degeneration after rat sciatic nerve injury.

Wallerian degeneration (WD) remains a subject of critical research interest in modern neurobiology. WD is a process which a large number of genes are differentially regulated, especially the early response to activate nerve degeneration and regeneration, but the precise mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, we report the signal pathways, key regulate recurrent neural networks and signal flow in the early WD. The data indicated that there are several kinds of up- or down-regulated genes, relating to the regulation of response to stimulus, signal transmission via phosphorylation event, immun

Proximo-distal gradient of spinal recurrent inhibition: implications for motor pool fractionation and dexterity.

Spinal recurrent inhibition (RI), mediated by Renshaw cells, exhibits a highly conserved proximal-to-distal gradient across mammals: it is robust in proximal motoneuron (MN) pools but absent in MNs innervating both extrinsic and intrinsic digit muscles. Although this organizational pattern has been recognised for more than six decades, its mechanistic basis has remained unexplained. The widely accepted view that the gradient reflects the evolutionary emergence of monosynaptic corticomotoneuronal (CM) projections is challenged by the cat, which lacks monosynaptic CM input to digit MNs yet exhib

Pharmacological evidence for propagation dynamics of TMS-evoked potentials in the human brain.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial magnetic stimulation-evoked potentials (TEPs) propagate from the stimulation site to distributed brain networks, with early propagation thought to occur predominantly through feedforward processes and later propagation through recurrent processes. We employed pharmacological manipulation to probe mechanisms that underlie feedforward and recurrent signal propagation in the human brain. METHODS: We manipulated TEP propagation using GABAAergic drugs in placebo-controlled randomized crossover experiments in healthy participants. Experiment 1 tested zolpidem and alprazolam

Prediction of knee loads during activities of daily living using custom instrumented insoles and machine learning.

Medial joint contact force, knee adduction moment, and knee flexion moment are key mechanical risk factors of knee osteoarthritis, yet calculating these knee loads traditionally requires time-intensive procedures with a gait laboratory. Integrating wearable technologies, such as instrumented insoles, with neural networks offers a promising avenue for rapid and accessible estimation of these variables in clinical environments. This study aimed to estimate knee loads during walking, running, sit-to-stand, and stand-to-sit activities using a recurrent neural network model trained on wearable sens

Charting epilepsy by searching for intelligence in network space with the help of evolving autonomous agents.

The problem of demarcating neural network space is formidable. A simple fully connected recurrent network of five units (binary activations, synaptic weight resolution of 10) has 3.2 *10(26) possible initial states. The problem increases drastically with scaling. Here we consider three complementary approaches to help direct the exploration to distinguish epileptic from healthy networks. [1] First, we perform a gross mapping of the space of five-unit continuous recurrent networks using randomized weights and initial activations. The majority of weight patterns (>70%) were found to result in ne

CEEMDAN-decomposed time series forecasting of reported hepatitis B cases using KOA-optimised deep learning: a nationwide study in mainland China (2004-2027).

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B remains a leading notifiable infection in mainland China, with a persistent burden shaped by chronic reservoirs, varied immunity, and shifting surveillance practices. Reliable short- to medium-term forecasts of reported hepatitis B cases are therefore valuable for planning diagnostics, care pathways, antiviral supply, and targeted prevention. METHODS: We compiled a national monthly series of hepatitis B notifications from January 2004 to December 2025 and applied Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) to isolate multiscale temporal

Neuronetwork Approach in the Early Diagnosis of Depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common mental illness, with around 280 million people suffering from depression worldwide. At present, the main way to quantify the severity of depression is through psychometric scales, which entail subjectivity on the part of both patient and clinician. In the last few years, deep (machine) learning is emerging as a more objective approach for measuring depression severity. We now investigate how neural networks might serve for the early diagnosis of depression. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We searched Medline (Pubmed) for articles published up to June 1, 2023. The sear

Physics-informed deep learning for infectious disease forecasting.

Accurate forecasting of contagious illnesses has become increasingly important to public health policymaking and better prediction could prevent the loss of millions of lives. To better prepare for future pandemics, it is essential to improve forecasting methods and capabilities. In this work, we implement physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), a popular tool in the area of scientific machine learning, to perform infectious disease forecasting. The used PINNs model incorporates dynamical systems representations of disease transmission into the loss function, thereby assimilating epidemiolog

Discrete synaptic states and context-modulated readouts support continual learning.

Biological neural systems learn new behaviors while retaining earlier ones, whereas sequentially trained artificial networks often overwrite parameters and forget previously learned behaviors. We introduce the Context-modulated Synaptic-states Recurrent Neural Network (CoSyn-RNN), a new continual-learning model inspired by heterogeneous synaptic states and neuro-modulatory control. CoSyn-RNN combines sparse recurrent allocation with a discrete protection rule: after each task, recurrent neurons whose synaptic weights cross a fixed threshold form a task-specific neuron group, and their associat

Contributions of cortical neuron firing patterns, synaptic connectivity, and plasticity to task performance.

Neuronal responses during behavior are diverse, ranging from highly reliable 'classical' responses to irregular 'non-classically responsive' firing. While a continuum of response properties is observed across neural systems, little is known about the synaptic origins and contributions of diverse responses to network function, perception, and behavior. To capture the heterogeneous responses measured from auditory cortex of rodents performing a frequency recognition task, we use a novel task-performing spiking recurrent neural network incorporating spike-timing-dependent plasticity. LEXF-ATT-XLM: A hybrid lexicon-enhanced attention model for hate speech detection in low-resource language Roman Urdu.

Hate speech detection in low-resource and informally written languages remains a significant challenge due to the lack of annotated corpora, orthographic variability, and complex code-mixing. Roman Urdu a non-standardized variant of Urdu written in the Latin script exemplifies these linguistic hurdles. In this paper, we propose LEXF-ATT-XLM, a novel hybrid deep learning architecture that synergizes contextual language modeling with explicit domain knowledge. Our model leverages XLM-RoBERTa for deep contextual embeddings, passed through a two-layer Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (BiGRU) and

DeepIR-Pred: identification of insulin receptors using metaheuristic optimization of biologically informed multi-view features with deep recurrent learning.

The insulin receptor (IR) proteins play a central role in cellular growth and metabolic regulation. Disruption of IRs is linked to several fatal neurodegenerative and cancer-like diseases. Wet-lab experiments are time-consuming, costly, and resource-intensive. Therefore, accurately predicting IR proteins using computational methods is critical for understanding the IR-associated biological mechanism and advancing therapeutic research. In this work, we propose a biologically informed deep learning method, DeepIR-Pred, which is the first rigorous model to accurately identify IR proteins. To ensu
