Morphometric variability in the Chagas' disease vector Rhodnius prolixus.

Morphometric variability was studied in six domestic Venezuelan populations of the blood-sucking bug Rhodnius prolixus Stal 1897 (Reduviidae, Triatominae) and in a sylvatic population identified as R. robustus Larrousse 1927. Evidence is here provided by both uni- and multifactorial analyses of extensive variation of morphological traits between the R. prolixus populations studied. Regardless the geographic or climatic environmental factor tested, none can be retained in a selective model accounting for the morphological variability observed. Moreover, the results failed to support any correla

[Akinetic pseudomutism (locked-in syndrome) in accidental Chagas' disease].

Chagas' disease is a major problem in Central and South America. The disease is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoon which may inhabit the blood and tissues of both man and animals. Although it may produce marked enlargement of several hollow viscera, myocardial involvement is the hallmark of chronic Chagas' disease. The clinical picture of chronic Chagas myocardites is one of insidious, progressive, prolonged congestive heart failure and cardiac enlargement. The almost invariable arrhythmias make syncope and sudden death common in patients both with p6 without congestive heart failure. El

Behavioural and electrophysiological responses of Triatoma dimidiata nymphs to conspecific faecal volatiles.

The behavioural and electrophysiological (electroantennography) responses of the first two instars of Triatoma dimidiata (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) Latreille to fresh and dry faecal headspace volatile extracts from fifth instar conspecific nymphs and synthetic compounds were analysed in this study. Recently emerged nymphs (3-5 days) aggregated around filter paper impregnated with dry faeces and around filter paper impregnated with extracts from both fresh and dry faeces. Older first instars (10-15 days) and second instars aggregated around filter paper impregnated with fresh and dry faeces, and t

Population structure of Andean Triatoma infestans: allozyme frequencies and their epidemiological relevance.

Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) from 22 Andean localities in Bolivia (n = 968) and Peru (n = 37) were analysed by multi-locus enzyme electrophoresis. Among 12 gene-enzyme systems analysed, GPD, 6GPD and PGM were polymorphic, ACON, G6PD, GPI, 1DH, LAP, MDH, ME, PEP-A and PEP-B were monomorphic. Allozyme frequencies were analysed in relation to geographical and climatic factors, and the presence or absence of Trypanosoma cruzi infection. At one locality (Vallegrande, Bolivia), the frequency of 6Pgd-1 was significantly higher in infected (41% of 85) than in uninfected (17% of 83) adult

Advancing the design of the kissing bug kill trap for surveillance of triatomines.

Standardized surveillance and control of kissing bugs (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae), the insect vectors of the Chagas disease parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, which causes Chagas disease, remains difficult. The Kissing Bug Kill Trap consists of solar powered LED lights mounted over a column of black funnels. It operates autonomously to capture, kill and preserve adult triatomines. We conducted experiments from 2022-2024 testing potential ways to improve trap performance, ease of deployment, and minimize cost. Thirteen prototypes evaluated in Texas, Guatemala, and Mexico captured 1,531 triat

Species-specific patterns of shelter exploitation in Chagas disease vectors of the genus Rhodnius.

Triatomines are insect vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi¸ the etiological agent of Chagas disease. Several species belonging to the genus Rhodnius (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) have been reported inhabiting domestic and peridomestic environments in different regions of Latin America. However, behavioral and sensory ecology aspects related to their use of shelters have been poorly studied. The objective of the present study was to characterize how bug density, illumination and thigmotactic information affect the use of shelters by three species belonging to the Rhodnius prolixus species complex. We evalua

Chagas vectors Panstrongylus chinai (Del Ponte, 1929) and Panstrongylus howardi (Neiva, 1911): chromatic forms or true species?

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease is a parasitic infection transmitted by "kissing bugs" (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) that has a huge economic impact in Latin American countries. The vector species with the upmost epidemiological importance in Ecuador are Rhodnius ecuadoriensis (Lent & Leon, 1958) and Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811). However, other species such as Panstrongylus howardi (Neiva, 1911) and Panstrongylus chinai (Del Ponte, 1929) act as secondary vectors due to their growing adaptation to domestic structures and their ability to transmit the parasite to humans. The latter two

Multifunctional lysozymes from the assassin bug Sycanus bifidus: Insecticidal proteins with anticoagulant and melanization inhibition properties.

BACKGROUND: Predatory hemipterans deploy complex venom cocktails to immobilize preys, yet the specific roles of many individual venom components remain poorly understood. RESULTS: Four lysozyme genes were identified from the genome of the predatory assassin bug Sycanus bifidus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), comprising one i-type (SbLyzi) and three c-type lysozyme genes (SbLyzc1-3). Transcriptomic and quantitative (q)PCR analyses revealed that these lysozymes were expressed at different levels in various venom glands. Of them, SbLyzc1-3 with signal peptides displayed significant transcriptions in th

Microsatellites reveal a high population structure in Triatoma infestans from Chuquisaca, Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: For Chagas disease, the most serious infectious disease in the Americas, effective disease control depends on elimination of vectors through spraying with insecticides. Molecular genetic research can help vector control programs by identifying and characterizing vector populations and then developing effective intervention strategies. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The population genetic structure of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), the main vector of Chagas disease in Bolivia, was investigated using a hierarchical sampling strategy. A total of 230 adults and nymphs from 23 loca

Machine-learning model led design to experimentally test species thermal limits: The case of kissing bugs (Triatominae).

Species Distribution Modelling (SDM) determines habitat suitability of a species across geographic areas using macro-climatic variables; however, micro-habitats can buffer or exacerbate the influence of macro-climatic variables, requiring links between physiology and species persistence. Experimental approaches linking species physiology to micro-climate are complex, time consuming and expensive. E.g., what combination of exposure time and temperature is important for a species thermal tolerance is difficult to judge a priori. We tackled this problem using an active learning approach that util

Field evidence of Trypanosoma cruzi infection, diverse host use and invasion of human dwellings by the Chagas disease vector in Florida, USA.

BACKGROUND: Triatomine bugs (Hemiptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae) are blood-sucking vectors of the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, which causes Chagas disease, a significant source of human morbidity and mortality in the Americas. Autochthonous transmission of Chagas disease in the United States is considered rare, despite evidence of Triatoma species harboring T. cruzi, invading homes, and biting occupants. In the southeastern United States, Triatoma sanguisuga is considered common, yet its distribution, host use, and T. cruzi infection are practically unknown in this region. METHODOLO

Proteolytic activity of Triatoma infestans saliva associated with PAR-2 activation and vasodilation.

BACKGROUND: Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) is a hematophagous insect and the main vector of Trypanosoma cruzi (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae). In the present study, the authors investigated whether a serine protease activity from the saliva of T. infestans has a role in vasomotor modulation, and in the insect-blood feeding by cleaving and activating protease-activated receptors (PARs). METHODS: T. infestans saliva was chromatographed as previously reported for purification of triapsin, a serine protease. The cleavage activity of triapsin on PAR peptides was investigated based o

Chagas disease vector blood meal sources identified by protein mass spectrometry.

Chagas disease is a complex vector borne parasitic disease involving blood feeding Triatominae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) insects, also known as kissing bugs, and the vertebrates they feed on. This disease has tremendous impacts on millions of people and is a global health problem. The etiological agent of Chagas disease, Trypanosoma cruzi (Kinetoplastea: Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae), is deposited on the mammalian host in the insect's feces during a blood meal, and enters the host's blood stream through mucous membranes or a break in the skin. Identifying the blood meal sources of triatomin
