Two patterns of results in polyneuropathies investigated with the H reflex. Correlation between proximal and distal conduction velocities.

The Hoffman (H) reflex of the soleus muscle has been used to study peripheral neurological disorders in 79 cases of chronic renal insufficiency prior to the initiation of haemodialysis, and in 94 cases of chronic alcoholism. In both groups, care was taken to ensure that the subjects examined could not be suspected of any other type of neuropathy. The results have been compared with those obtained in 42 normal subjects. The nerve conduction velocity in the reflex pathway was evaluated by an H index formula in which the conduction time (interval between M and H responses) is related to the lengt

Macaque monkey trigeminal blink reflex circuits targeting orbicularis oculi motoneurons.

The trigeminal blink reflex plays an important role in protecting the corneal surface from damage and preserving visual function in an unpredictable environment. The closing phase of the human reflex, produced by activation of the orbicularis oculi (ObOc) muscles, consists of an initial, small, ipsilateral R1 component, followed by a larger, bilateral R2 component. We investigated the circuitry that underlies this reflex in macaque (Macaca fascicularis and Macaca mulatta) monkeys by the use of single and dual tracer methods. Injection of retrograde tracer into the facial nucleus labeled neuron

Recruitment gain of spinal motor neuron pools in cat and human.

The output from a motor nucleus is determined by the synaptic input to the motor neurons and their intrinsic properties. Here, we explore whether the source of synaptic inputs to the motor neurons (cats) and the age or post-stroke conditions (humans) may change the recruitment gain of the motor neuron pool. In cats, the size of Ia EPSPs in triceps surae motor neurons (input) and monosynaptic reflexes (MSRs; output) was recorded in the soleus and medial gastrocnemius motor nerves following graded stimulation of dorsal roots. The MSR was plotted against the EPSP thereby obtaining a measure of th

Indian red scorpion venom depresses spinal synaptic transmission without involving NMDA receptors.

Stings of Indian red scorpion (Mesobuthus tamulus, MBT) produce neurological abnormalities such as convulsions and paralysis. These parameters indicate the activity at alpha-motoneuron. The present study was therefore, undertaken to evaluate the effect of MBT-venom on spinal reflexes and the involvement of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. The experiments were performed on isolated hemisected spinal cords from 4 to 6 days old rats. Stimulation of a dorsal root with supramaximal strength at 0.1Hz evoked monosynaptic (MSR) and polysynaptic reflex (PSR) potentials in the corresponding segmen

Riluzole decreases flexion withdrawal reflex but not voluntary ankle torque in human chronic spinal cord injury.

The objectives of this study were to probe the contribution of spinal neuron persistent sodium conductances to reflex hyperexcitability in human chronic spinal cord injury. The intrinsic excitability of spinal neurons provides a novel target for medical intervention. Studies in animal models have shown that persistent inward currents, such as persistent sodium currents, profoundly influence neuronal excitability, and recovery of persistent inward currents in spinal neurons of animals with spinal cord injury routinely coincides with the appearance of spastic reflexes. Pharmacologically, this ne

Effects of intrathecal clonidine injection on spinal reflexes and human locomotion in incomplete paraplegic subjects.

We studied the effect of the intrathecal (i.t.) injection of clonidine (30, 60 and 90 microg) on the polysynaptic spinal reflexes (PSR) elicited by electrical stimulation of flexor reflex afferents (FRA), monosynaptic reflex and gait of 11 subjects with spinal cord injuries. The effect of clonidine administration on gait velocity, stride amplitude and duration was measured in eight subjects who were able to walk. Five subjects were able to walk after intrathecal injection of clonidine and three were not able to stand up. Three subjects improved their gait velocity after clonidine administratio

Intracranial stimulation of the trigeminal nerve in man. II. Reflex responses.

The reflex responses evoked by direct electrical stimulation of the intracranial portion of the trigeminal nerve have been studied in 16 subjects undergoing percutaneous retrogasserian thermocoagulation for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia affecting the second or third division. In the obicularis oculi muscle, early and late responses similar to the R1 and R2 components of the blink reflex were recorded. The former could be evoked only by stimulation of the second division and its latency was consistent with intermediately fast afferents. A late reflex (50-70 ms) was occasionally recorded

Immobilization leads to reduced stretch reflexes but increased central reflex gain in the rat.

Plastic adaptations are known to take place in muscles, tendons, joints, and the nervous system in response to changes in muscle activity. However, few studies have addressed how these plastic adaptations are related. Thus this study focuses on changes in the mechanical properties of the ankle plantarflexor muscle-tendon unit, stretch reflex activity, and spinal neuronal pathways in relation to cast immobilization. The left rat hindlimb from toes to hip was immobilized with a plaster cast for 1, 2, 4, or 8 wk followed by acute electrophysiological recordings to investigate muscle stiffness and

A transcortical loop demonstrated by stimulation of low-threshold muscle afferents in the awake monkey.

1. The hypothesis that a transcortical loop can be activated by electrical stimulation of low-threshold muscle afferents was tested. The effect of these afferents on the excitability of motoneurones was measured with the monosynaptic spinal reflex (H-reflex).2. Four monkeys were trained to maintain a constant tonic activity in the soleus muscle so that the amplitude of evoked H-reflexes was constant. The intensity of conditioning stimuli was just subthreshold for direct or reflex electromyographic responses. The intensity of the test stimuli was adjusted to evoke an H-reflex of maximal amplitu

Vestibulo-spinal response modification as determined with the H-reflex during the Spacelab-1 flight.

Our laboratory at the Johnson Space Center has employed the H-reflex recorded from the soleus muscle as a method of monosynaptic reflex testing in conjunction with vertical linear acceleration to assess modification of utriculo-saccular function induced through prolonged exposure to microgravity. It was hypothesized that exposure to free fall would reduce the necessity for postural reflexes in the major leg muscles, and that postural modification would reflect a change, not in the peripheral vestibular organs, but more centrally. This postural adjustment would reflect a sensory motor rearrange

Immobilization induces changes in presynaptic control of group Ia afferents in healthy humans.

Neural plasticity occurs throughout adult life in response to maturation, use and disuse. Recent studies have documented that H-reflex amplitudes increase following a period of immobilization. To elucidate the mechanisms contributing to the increase in H-reflex size following immobilization we immobilized the left foot and ankle joint for 2 weeks in 12 able-bodied subjects. Disynaptic reciprocal inhibition of soleus (SOL) motoneurons and presynaptic control of SOL group Ia afferents was measured before and after the immobilization as well as following 2 weeks of recovery. Following immobilizat

Human jaw muscle motor behaviour. II. Reflex and receptor mechanisms.

The stretch reflex is much more complicated than the simple tendon jerk with a monosynaptic reflex pathway. Muscle stretch is not a necessary prerequisite to elicit the short latency EMG excitatory response. Long latency EMG responses are probably of greater functional importance. The silent period (SP) following the jaw jerk is prolonged in patients with symptoms of mandibular dysfunction. In the individual case, however, measurement of the SP may not be of diagnostic value. The Golgi tendon organs are highly sensitive tension receptors which play a much larger role in the proprioceptive regu

H-reflex latency in uremic neuropathy: correlation with NCV and clinical findings.

Sixty-two uremic patients on dialysis of varying durations were tested bilaterally for posterior tibial nerve H-reflex latency, at 3-month intervals. Bilateral nerve conduction velocities (NCVs) of the peroneal, tibial, and sural nerves were concomitantly determined in all subjects. Proprioception sense, vibration perception threshold at the great toes, and deep tendon reflexes at the knee and ankle were determined in all subjects on the day of electrodiagnostic testing. The sensitivity of the H-reflex latency in detection of the onset and severity of uremic neuropathy was assessed. H-reflex l

Spinal cord stimulation modulates post-synaptic inhibition improving neuromotor control of arm movement in people with chronic hemiparesis post-stroke.

Epidural spinal cord stimulation has been shown to be a promising neurotechnology to improve upper limb function in people affected by stroke. It is well established that SCS targeting the dorsal root entry zone increases excitatory drive to α-motoneurons via the monosynaptic reflex pathway. However, the effects of SCS on inhibitory neural pathways remain unexplored. We hypothesized that SCS improves the neuromotor control of arm movement by strengthening both excitatory and inhibitory circuit function. We show in three individuals with post-stroke motor symptoms that SCS enhances postsynaptic

Anticipatory responses to a self-applied load in normal subjects and hemiparetic patients.

A bimanual loading task was studied in eight right-handed normal subjects and nine hemiparetic patients in order to detect anticipatory adjustments and to analyse the reflex and voluntary, responses induced by the perturbation. The left forearm (or the impaired side in patients) was flexed at approximately 90 degrees and free to rotate in a vertical sagittal plane. It was held to resist a load (2-3 kg) dropped either by an experimenter (control situation), or by the subject himself with no visual control (self-applied situation). The load was dropped from the right hand by normal subjects and

Clinical and electrophysiological appraisal of the significance of radicular injury in back pain.

Clinical electrophysiological studies were analysed in 60 consecutive patients with back pain with or without other evidence for a radiculopathy. These studies included needle EMG of relevant limb and paraspinal muscles as well as F responses and H reflexes recorded from the soleus muscle. Segmental denervation was found in 29 of the 60 patients. In 57 patients, abnormal slowing of the F response was present in 27, either unilaterally (25) or bilaterally (two). In 18 of 47 patients with H reflex studies, the H reflex was either unilaterally absent (12), asymmetrically prolonged (five), or bila

Evoked ink release in Aplysia produces inhibition of the siphon withdrawal reflex in neighboring conspecifics.

Aplysia californica exhibit a dramatic defensive reaction, the release of a cloud of dark purple ink, in response to noxious stimuli. Although the neural control of this behavior has been studied rather extensively, the functional significance of the inking response is not well understood. We have found that ink released by animals that are subjected to noxious stimuli rapidly induces inhibition of the tail-elicited siphon withdrawal reflex in neighboring Aplysia. Further experiments indicated that the inhibitor is the ink itself, and not some other substance released by the donor animals. Fin
