Regional myocardial blood flow in experimental myocardial infarction after pretreatment with aspirin.

The effects of aspirin on myocardial blood flow in an area of ischemia were studied in 12 baboons. In each, a diagonal branch of the left anterior descending coronary artery was ligated. Six of the baboons received aspirin (2 X 600 mg orally, 12 hours and 1 hour before ligation); the other six did not receive aspirin and served as a control group. The extent of myocardial ischemia was delineated with an electrode wire grid on the surface of the anterior left ventricular wall. The maximal area circumscribed by electrodes with 2 mV or more ST segment elevation was compared with the area of reduc

Effects of hemorrhage on regional blood flow distribution in dogs and primates.

The effects of hemorrhage on arterial pressure, blood flows, and resistances in the coronary, mesenteric, renal, and iliac beds of healthy, conscious dogs and intact, tranquilized baboons were studied. Mild nonhypotensive hemorrhage (14+/-2 ml/kg) increased heart rate and mesenteric and iliac resistances slightly but significantly, and decreased renal resistance (-13+/-2%). Moderate hypotensive hemorrhage, 26+/-2 ml/kg, reduced mean arterial pressure (-23+/-2 mm Hg) and blood flows to the mesenteric (-56+/-3%), iliac (-58+/-5%), and coronary (-39+/-4%) vascular beds, and increased heart rate (

Regional pulmonary blood volume in patients with abnormal blood pressure or flow in the pulmonary circulation.

We studied the effects of a chronic increase in flow and of chronic hypertension on regional pulmonary blood volume and extravascular lung density (lung tissue and interstitial water per unit thoracic volume) in one group of patients with intracardiac, left-to-right shunt and in another group with Eisenmenger's syndrome or primary pulmonary hypertension. We used positron computerized tomography to measure regional lung density (transmission scans) and blood volume (labelling with 11CO). The distribution of pulmonary blood volume was more uniform in patients with a chronic increase in pulmonary

Correlations between P300 components and regional cerebral blood flows.

To evaluate the diagnostic importance of event-related potential P300, the correlation between P300 and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was investigated in various brain regions in patients with multiple cerebral infarction (16 cases), chronic alcoholism (11 cases) and Alzheimer's disease (5 cases) and in seven healthy people. Cognitive function was also evaluated by mini-mental state examination. P300 latency and rCBF was measured by recording of evoked potentials using an oddball paradigm and stable xenon computed tomographic scanning, respectively. A significant (P<0.05) negative correl

Changes of regional cerebral blood flow after deep brain stimulation in cervical dystonia.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical dystonia is considered as a network disorder affecting various brain regions in recent days. Presumably, deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the internal segment of globus pallidus (GPi) may exert therapeutic effects for cervical dystonia through modulation of the aberrant brain networks. In the present study, we investigated postoperative regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) changes after GPi DBS using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to identify significant activity changes in several relevant brain areas of cervical dystonia patients. METHODS: A total of

Regional cerebral blood flow changes induced by deep brain stimulation in secondary dystonia.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of deep brain stimulation (DBS) on regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in cases of secondary dystonia as well as to correlate the rCBF changes with clinical outcomes. METHODS: Six patients with medically intractable secondary dystonia who underwent DBS surgery were included in this study. Burke-Fahn-Mardsen Dystonia Rating Scale (BFMDRS) was used for the assessment of dystonia, before and after surgery. Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) of the brain was performed postoperatively in the two stimulation stat

Regional cerebral blood flow in patients with alcohol-related dementia: a SPECT study.

The purpose of this study was to investigate regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) changes using 1110 MBq of Tc-99m ECD SPECT in alcohol-related dementia (ARD) patients. Twenty-five patients with ARD and 22 healthy control subjects were included in the study. Mini-Mental Status Examination was applied to the patients and controls. The ARD patients showed drastically reduced rCBF in the frontal cortices, basal ganglia, and thalami. The results indicate that ARD is associated with hypoperfusion in both cortical and subcortical regions. These findings support previous studies suggesting the associa

Changes in regional cerebral blood flow after body image exposure in eating disorders.

Relationships of 'perceptual distortion' and 'cognitive evaluation' components of body image disturbances to brain activity were investigated. Changes in regional cerebral blood (rCBF) of nine patients with anorexia nervosa restrictive type (AN), 13 patients with bulimia nervosa purging type (BN) and 12 controls following three experiments with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) were compared: at rest, following a landscape video presentation (neutral stimulus), and after their filmed body image (positive stimulus) exposure. Body distortion was measured with the Silhouette test

Regional cerebral blood flow in childhood autism: a SPET study with SPM evaluation.

AIM: To establish a link between rCBF assessed with Tc-ECD SPET and the clinical manifestation of the disease. METHODS: We performed the study on 11 patients (five girls and six boys; mean age 11.2 years) displaying autistic behaviour and we compared their data with that of an age-matched reference group of eight normal children. A quantitative analysis of rCBF was performed calculating a perfusion index (PI) and an asymmetry index (AI) in each lobe. Images were analysed with statistical parametric mapping software, following the spatial normalization of SPET images for a standard brain. RES

Regional cerebral blood flow changes associated with clitorally induced orgasm in healthy women.

There is a severe lack of knowledge regarding the brain regions involved in human sexual performance in general, and female orgasm in particular. We used [15O]-H2O positron emission tomography to measure regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in 12 healthy women during a nonsexual resting state, clitorally induced orgasm, sexual clitoral stimulation (sexual arousal control) and imitation of orgasm (motor output control). Extracerebral markers of sexual performance and orgasm were rectal pressure variability (RPstd) and perceived level of sexual arousal (PSA). Sexual stimulation of the clitoris (c

Deduction of regional cerebral blood flow loss index after stenosis in cerebral artery.

OBJECTIVE: To study the calculation of cerebral blood flow loss ratio after cerebral artery stenosis using the data obtained from transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD), by deducing regional cerebral blood flow loss index (rCBFLI). METHODS AND RESULTS: The data of TCD performed in 31 cases of unilateral stenosis in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) were collected and analyzed for deducing the formula for calculating the MCA stenosis index (STI): STI=1 (Vm(0)/Vm(1)) x (PI(1)/PI(0)), where Vm(0) is the mean normal velocity of MCA blood flow (derived from the measurements in 908 normal subjects at

Possible association between delusional disorder, somatic type and reduced regional cerebral blood flow.

1. A 78-year-old female with DDST and pain disorder was treated by clomipramine 20-100 mg/day. The hypochondriacal delusion was completely resolved, while the pains were partially resolved. 2. The SPECT using Xe-133 taken at the early stage of clomipramine treatment, when she still had hypochondriacal delusions, showed markedly reduced rCBF in the temporal and parietal lobes, with predominance on the left hemisphere. Meanwhile, the SPECT taken after resolution of the hypochondriacal delusions showed a marked improvement in the reduced rCBF. 3. This report suggests that DDST has some associatio

Regional cerebral blood flow during mechanical hyperventilation in patients with fulminant hepatic failure.

Hyperventilation is frequently used to prevent or postpone the development of cerebral edema and intracranial hypertension in patients with fulminant hepatic failure (FHF). The influence of such therapy on regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) remains, however, unknown. In this study the CBF-distribution pattern was determined within the first 12 hours after development of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) stage 4 before and during hyperventilation. Ten consecutive patients (median age 48 [range 33-57] years) with FHF and 9 healthy controls (median age 54 [24-58] years) had rCBF determined by single p

The acetylcholine releaser linopirdine increases parietal regional cerebral blood flow in Alzheimer's disease.

Centrally acting cholinergic drugs have been reported to increase regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) as measured by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in brain regions affected by Alzheimer's disease (AD). We studied the effects of the acetylcholine releaser linopirdine (LPD) on SPECT rCBF in patients with probable AD. Twenty-four AD patients (12 M, 12 F; mean age +/- SD = 68.9 +/- 8.2 years) and 13 healthy controls (8 M, 5 F; 68.4 +/- 8.0 years) participated. AD patients were scanned with 20 mCi of Tc99m-ECD at baseline and following 4 weeks of treatment with LPD 40 mg TID (n

Effects of N-acetyl-L-cysteine on regional blood flow during endotoxic shock.

We previously reported that N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), an oxygen free-radical scavenger, can increase the oxygen extraction capabilities during endotoxic shock when blood flow is progressively reduced. In the present study, we investigated whether the protective effects of NAC are related to an improvement in regional blood flow following endotoxemia. Fourteen anesthetized, saline-infused and ventilated dogs were divided into two groups: 7 dogs received NAC (150 mg/kg, followed by a 20 mg/kg.h infusion), and the other 7 dogs served as a control time-matching group. Thirty minutes later all the

Sympathetic nerve modulation of regional cerebral blood flow during asphyxia in newborn piglets.

Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during asphyxia suggests a reflex vasoconstrictor mechanism active principally in brain cortex. Present studies in newborn piglets investigate sympathetic modulation of the cerebrovasculature both during and after acute asphyxia. Unilateral superior cervical sympathetic ganglionectomy (SCSG) was performed in 13 newborn piglets, after which asphyxia was produced by discontinuing ventilation. In 8 animals, blood flow was measured during control and sequentially 1, 2, and 3 min after ventilation was stopped. In 5 piglets with unilateral SCSG, cortical flow decr

Effect of enkephalins on cardiac output and regional blood flow in conscious dogs.

To investigate the effects of enkephalins on cardiac output and regional blood flow, we administered D-Ala-D-Leu-enkephalin (DADLE) intracisternally (ic) to 14 chronically instrumented unanesthetized dogs. Measurements were made at base line, 20, 45, and 75 min after DADLE (25 or 125 micrograms/kg) and 15 min after naloxone (5 micrograms/kg ic). After 125 micrograms/kg DADLE, all animals developed hypoventilation, bradycardia, and decreased O2 consumption without hypotension. Cardiac output decreased (-34%), but brain blood flow increased (+110%). Blood flow decreased to the diaphragm (-38%),
