A Screening for Virus Infections in Eight Herds of Semi-domesticated Eurasian Tundra Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in Norway, 2013-2018.

Background: Previous serological screenings have indicated that Eurasian semi-domesticated tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in Finnmark, Northern Norway, are exposed to alphaherpesvirus, gammaherpesvirus and pestivirus. Alphaherpesvirus (i.e., Cervid herpesvirus 2; CvHV2) has been identified as the transmissible component of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC). Limited knowledge exists on the presence and prevalence of virus infections in other herding regions in Norway, which are hosting ~67,000 semi-domesticated reindeer and have contact with other species and populations of wi

First detection of a cervidpoxvirus in Europe-disease occurrence in semi-domesticated Eurasian tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in Norway and Sweden.

UNLABELLED: Globally, there are six millions of Rangifer spp., including both wild and semi-domesticated populations. Reindeer herding with Eurasian tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) is central to the Fennoscandian Sámi people. Commencing in 2018, a novel disease presenting with periorbital lesions was reported in reindeer in multiple locations in Norway and Sweden, as individual cases and outbreaks. Lesions were also seen on the genitals, nostrils, and ears of affected reindeer, in combination with lethargy. Necropsy findings included lesions with crusts on the eyelids, vulva, and

The Reindeer Circadian Clock Is Rhythmic and Temperature-compensated But Shows Evidence of Weak Coupling Between the Secondary and Core Molecular Clock Loops.

Circadian rhythms synchronize the internal physiology of animals allowing them to anticipate daily changes in their environment. Arctic habitats may diminish the selective advantages of circadian rhythmicity by relaxing daily rhythmic environmental constraints, presenting a valuable opportunity to study the evolution of circadian rhythms. In reindeer, circadian control of locomotor activity and melatonin release is weak or absent, and the molecular clockwork is reportedly non-functional. Here we present new evidence that the circadian clock in cultured reindeer fibroblasts is rhythmic and temp

Inkoo and Sindbis viruses in blood sucking insects, and a serological study for Inkoo virus in semi-domesticated Eurasian tundra reindeer in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne viruses pose a serious threat to humans worldwide. There has been an upsurge in the number of mosquito-borne viruses in Europe, mostly belonging to the families Togaviridae, genus Alphavirus (Sindbis, Chikungunya), Flaviviridae (West Nile, Usutu, Dengue), and Peribunyaviridae, genus Orthobunyavirus, California serogroup (Inkoo, Batai, Tahyna). The principal focus of this study was Inkoo (INKV) and Sindbis (SINV) virus circulating in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and some parts of Russia. These viruses are associated with morbidity in humans. However, there is a knowledge

The effect of different mineral frames on ectopic bone formation in mouse hind leg muscles induced by native reindeer bone morphogenetic protein.

INTRODUCTION: Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) require carrier material for slow release and framing material for osteoconduction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effect of a frame on early bone formation induced by partially purified native reindeer BMP in composite implants containing 3 mg of BMP, type IV collagen and tricalcium phosphate (TCP/Col/BMP) or hydroxyapatite (HA/Col/BMP) or biphasic tricalcium phosphate-hydroxyapatite (TCP/HA/Col/BMP) or biocoral (NC/Col/BMP) was evaluated using a mouse hind leg muscle pouch model. Collagen with native reindeer BMP (Col/BMP) and corresponding impla

Ocular Histopathological Findings in Semi-Domesticated Eurasian Tundra Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) with Infectious Keratoconjunctivitis after Experimental Inoculation with Cervid Herpesvirus 2.

Infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) is a common transmissible ocular disease in semi-domesticated Eurasian tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). In large outbreaks, IKC may affect tens of animals in a herd, with the most severe cases often requiring euthanasia due to the destruction of the affected eyes and permanent blindness. An experimental inoculation with cervid herpesvirus 2 (CvHV2), alone or in combination with Moraxella bovoculi, demonstrated that CvHV2 has the ability to cause clinical signs of IKC in previously unexposed reindeer. Tissues collected from upper and lower eyel

Presence of foodborne pathogens, extended-spectrum β-lactamase -producing Enterobacteriaceae, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in slaughtered reindeer in northern Finland and Norway.

BACKGROUND: Various food-producing animals were recognized in recent years as healthy carriers of bacterial pathogens causing human illness. In northern Fennoscandia, the husbandry of semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) is a traditional livelihood and meat is the main product. This study determined the presence of selected foodborne pathogens, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae in healthy semi-domesticated reindeer at slaughter in northern Finland and Norway. RESULTS: All 470 reindeer fe

Calcium Isotopic Composition in Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) Bones and Tooth Enamel: A Scalable Tool to Quantify Nursing Frequency in Past and Modern Populations?

RATIONALE: Populations of North American caribou and Eurasian reindeer (Rangifer tarandus sspp.), essential for Arctic ecosystems and human communities, are experiencing unprecedented declines due to climate change and anthropogenic pressures. While understanding their historical resilience and demographic dynamics is critical for conservation, long-term population trends and the mechanisms driving these declines remain partly unresolved. METHODS: This study explores if calcium (Ca) isotopic compositions (δ44/42Ca) measured by MC-ICP-MS could help quantify the number of nursing periods experi

Trapping oestrid parasites of reindeer: the relative age, fat body content and gonotrophic conditions of Cephenemyia trompe and Hypoderma tarandi females caught in baited traps.

Dissection of flies caught in northern Norway revealed that only mated, gravid females of H.tarandi (L.) and larviparous C.trompe (Modeer) were caught in host-mimicking CO2-baited traps. Trapped females had the same gonotrophic and fat body (FB) conditions as females caught on and around reindeer. Most trapped females of both species were of middle to old age, having only one-half to no FB reserves left and only a few to moderate numbers of eggs or larvae remaining. Most young females trapped also had previously oviposited or larviposited at least once, and some newly eclosed, mated females we

Infectious keratoconjunctivitis in semi-domesticated Eurasian tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus): microbiological study of clinically affected and unaffected animals with special reference to cervid herpesvirus 2.

BACKGROUND: Infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) is one of the most common ocular diseases in ruminants worldwide. In addition to keratitis and conjunctivitis, animals with IKC can develop uveitis, corneal ulcer, and in severe cases, blindness. The bacteria Moraxella spp. has been described as the primary causative agent of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) in cattle (Bos taurus), while Chlamydia spp. and Mycoplasma conjunctivae are considered the main causative agents of IKC in sheep (Ovis aries). Previous studies indicated cervid herpesvirus 2 (CvHV2) as the primary causative age

Prions in Muscles of Cervids with Chronic Wasting Disease, Norway.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is an emerging prion disease in Nordic countries and has been detected in reindeer, moose, and red deer since 2016. CWD sporadically detected in moose and red deer in 3 Nordic countries demonstrated pathologic and strain characteristics different from CWD in reindeer, including an unexpected lack of prions outside the central nervous system as measured by standard diagnostic tests. Using protein misfolding cyclic amplification, we detected prions in the lymphoreticular system of moose and red deer with CWD in Norway and, remarkably, in muscles of both of those spe
