Behavior change techniques in a care partner-assisted oral health intervention for people with mild dementia: a secondary mixed-methods analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Oral hygiene declines early in mild dementia (MD), yet few interventions specify which behavior change techniques (BCTs) drive improvement. We examined the use of BCTs in relation to oral health outcomes in a care-partner-assisted intervention for persons living with MD. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using a secondary convergent mixed-methods design, we analyzed the coaching arm of a three-arm randomized trial. Seventeen dyads (persons living with MD-care partners) completed four coaching sessions (68 coaching session transcripts). Seventeen BCTs were specified for u

Relational, Ethical, and Care Challenges in ALS: A Systematic Review and Qualitative Metasynthesis of Nurses' Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to severe functional decline and death, imposing significant physical, emotional, and ethical burdens on patients and healthcare providers. With no curative treatment, ALS care depends on the early and sustained integration of palliative care to address complex and evolving needs. Nurses play a pivotal role in this process, yet their lived experiences remain underexplored. This study aimed to synthesize qualitative evidence on nurses' experiences in ALS care, with a focus on emotional, ethical

The self-directed patient in guided internet-delivered CBT: a qualitative study of patient role expectations.

BACKGROUND: Therapist-guided internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (guided iCBT) is an effective and scalable treatment for anxiety and depression. Central to this format is the expectation that patients work independently with therapeutic content. However, limited attention has been paid to how healthcare professionals and patients within guided iCBT understand the patient role. OBJECTIVE: This study explores how healthcare professionals and patients understand the patient role in guided iCBT, using self-determination theory to examine how autonomy, competence, and relatedness shap

Invisible Wounds: Navigating Palliative Care for Survivors of Human Trafficking Diagnosed with Serious Illness.

Survivors of human trafficking experience profound trauma with long-lasting psychological, physical, and social consequences that can complicate medical care, particularly in the context of serious illness. This case highlights the palliative care approach to a 38-year-old woman with metastatic cervical cancer and a history of trafficking-related trauma. The clinical team encountered nuanced challenges, including disrupted trust, limited social support, high symptom burden, and distress related to bodily autonomy. A trauma-informed, multidisciplinary team-comprised of palliative care, gynecolo

Being Sensed, Scored, and 'Connected': A Social-Gerontological Critique of AI-Driven Loneliness Detection for Older Adults in Taiwan.

Enthusiasm for artificial intelligence (AI) that continuously infers emotion promises to change how care systems identify older adults at risk of loneliness. We use AI-driven loneliness detection to mean systems that infer loneliness, or a proxy for it, from sensed data rather than from a person's answer, rendering the inference as a score or category used in care; they range from facial and vocal emotion recognition to behavioral risk prediction from everyday activity data. Engineering feasibility, more than any social-gerontological understanding of loneliness, has driven this agenda, and li

PROMs: Patient related or patient centred? A bridge between Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) and clinical ethics in the context of a cohort of gynaeco-oncological patients analysed by qualitative semi- structured interviews.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are widely used in oncologic care, yet it remains unclear to what extent they capture the depth and contextual meaning of patient experience in gynecologic oncology. OBJECTIVE: To explore gynecologic oncology patients’ narratives of treatment experience, needs, and psychosocial impacts, and to examine how these narratives align with domains covered by commonly used PROMs. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 20 female participants (31–72 years) across different therapy phases. Interviews were analysed using a cons

Upward intergenerational support and vaccination decisions among community-dwelling older adults in China: A multicenter qualitative study.

Routine vaccination coverage among older adults in China remains suboptimal despite established public health recommendations. Family engagement, deeply embedded in Chinese culture, is shown to influence health decisions; however, the specific role of upward intergenerational support (UIS) from adult children in older adults' vaccination decisions remains understudied in the post-pandemic era. To explore the forms and mechanisms through which UIS influences vaccination decision‑making among community‑dwelling older adults in post‑pandemic China, we conducted this multicenter qualitative study.

"Reconciling"- conceptualising the grieving process of family members involved in assisted dying: a grounded formal theory.

BACKGROUND: The death of a loved one invariably triggers a complex constellation of profound emotional, psychological, and physical grief reactions. While theoretical frameworks for understanding the grieving process are well-established, the advent of assisted dying presents a novel and under-examined context for grief and bereavement. Thus, this study sought to generate a theory explaining the grieving process of family members involved in assisted dying. METHODS: A grounded formal theory approach was employed. Extensive systematic searches were undertaken across various four databases for

Aging alone: lifestyle and unmet needs among unpartnered middle-aged adults preparing for later life in urban Taiwan.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Population aging, delayed marriage, one-person households, and weakening assumptions of spouse-based care make unpartnered aging an emerging concern in Taiwan. This study examined how unpartnered middle-aged adults in urban Taiwan prepare for later life and developed two grounded models of solitary aging. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A convergent, qualitatively weighted mixed-methods design was used. 11 unpartnered adults aged 43-56 completed interviews and questionnaires assessing demographics, subjective aging, personality traits, social connectedness, isolation,

Understanding Psychotherapy Discontinuation Among Ethnically Minoritised Adults: A Systematic Review and Qualitative Synthesis.

Psychotherapy discontinuation remains a persistent challenge for mental health services, with approximately half of clients ending therapy prematurely. Individuals from ethnically minoritised backgrounds are disproportionately affected by early discontinuation; however, less is known about how these populations understand and experience this process. This review aimed to explore the lived experiences and perceived reasons for psychotherapy discontinuation among adults from ethnically minoritised backgrounds. A systematic review and qualitative synthesis were conducted. Six electronic databases

Investigating the role of perceived autonomy support in moderating the association between diabetes stigma and psychological and diabetes self-management outcomes among adults with type 2 diabetes in Ghana.

Studies on diabetes-related stigma rarely focus on identifying or examining protective factors (e.g., social support and healthcare environment) that can mitigate the adverse effect of this social phenomenon. In this cross-sectional study, we examined perceived autonomy support, a concept from the self-determination theory, as a moderator of the association between diabetes-related stigma and its adverse behavioral and psychological (depression, diabetes distress, and anxiety) correlates. We recruited 190 adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) from a tertiary hospital in Ghana. We assessed diabetes

"What you did with your time on the earth": interpreting well-being through the found poetry of a Broadway performer.

BACKGROUND: Broadway's extraordinary commercial success rests on the shoulders of elite performers whose psychological well-being directly contributes to the industry's artistic excellence and economic sustainability. However, the lived experiences of professional musical theatre performers remain underexplored in scholarly literature. Existing research has emphasized individual coping strategies, with less focus on the conditions that support sustained well-being in high-stakes performance contexts. This exploratory single-case study investigated how a seasoned female Broadway performer susta

Negotiating participation in conversations about care planning between people living with mild neurocognitive disorders and their healthcare proxies: a single case analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The time between diagnosis with a mild neurocognitive disorder (MND) and definitive loss of decisional capacity presents a window of opportunity to participate in advance care planning (ACP). To implement early planning, we need to know how to promote healthy relationships between people with MND and their healthcare proxies. Our objective is to examine how people with MND and their proxies discuss engagement in ACP and how proxies orient toward the ability and right of the person with MND to provide answers. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We undertake a conversation

The integration of psychosocial care, ethical governance, and patient-centered research in current and future approaches in the field of vascularized composite allotransplantation.

Vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) has transitioned from an experimental endeavor to a clinically viable option for patients with complex tissue loss. While advances in microsurgery, immunosuppression, and perioperative care have improved graft survival, long-term success remains contingent upon psychosocial integration and robust ethical governance. These developments are reshaping not only clinical outcomes but also the conceptual foundations of transplantation. VCA uniquely challenges traditional paradigms, as it is primarily life-enhancing rather than life-saving, thereby int
