Illness surveillance and rapid needs assessment among Hurricane Katrina evacuees--Colorado, September 1-23, 2005.

After Hurricane Katrina struck the U.S. Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005, approximately 200,000 evacuees were sent to shelters in 18 states. On September 3, 2005, Colorado was asked to assist in sheltering some of the evacuees; the next day the first evacuees were airlifted into the Denver area, where they were housed at the former Lowry Air Force Base. During the next 4 weeks, 3,600 evacuees registered at Lowry, with an average of 400 persons in residence per day. Other persons self-evacuated to other parts of the state, including approximately 2,000 who went to Colorado Springs. In all, an esti

Displacement and kidney care disruption in Sudan: lessons from a fragile health crisis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To examine the disruption of kidney care services in Sudan following the 2023 conflict, highlighting the compounded risks faced by dialysis and transplant patients during crises, and offering evidence-based strategies for future emergency preparedness. RECENT FINDINGS: The conflict in Sudan exposed deep systemic weaknesses in an already under-resourced nephrology infrastructure. Hemodialysis centers were damaged or shut down, supply chains collapsed, and patient displacement became widespread. Over 70% of patients experienced treatment interruption and many died due to miss

Delivering health interventions to women, children, and adolescents in conflict settings: what have we learned from ten country case studies?

Armed conflict disproportionately affects the morbidity, mortality, and wellbeing of women, newborns, children, and adolescents. Our study presents insights from a collection of ten country case studies aiming to assess the provision of sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health and nutrition interventions in ten conflict-affected settings in Afghanistan, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. We found that despite large variations in contexts and decision making processes, antenatal care, basic em

Single Neurosurgeon Operative Experience at Craig Joint Theater Hospital During the Afghanistan Surge (November 2010 to April 2011), Part II: Humanitarian Cases.

BACKGROUND: The Afghanistan Surge saw NATO troops working with their Afghan partners to remove Taliban governance and replace it with a more democratic model. As part of this endeavor, medical support for both trauma and humanitarian cases was needed. OBJECTIVE: Identify and discuss disease trends to better prepare for future combat medical treatments. METHODS: Retrospective review of operative experience from a neurosurgeon from November 2010 to April 2011. RESULTS: 63 cases were performed on 20 NATO and 43 Afghan patients. Combat-related neurotrauma represented 73% (46/63) of cases and hu

Arts as a vehicle for community building and post-disaster development.

Use of the arts in international aid is common in an ad hoc form, but it has not been systematically theorised or evaluated. The arts have the potential to be a culturally contextualised and sustainable intervention for adults and children in the aftermath of war or disaster. On the micro level, the arts are a method to enable the retrieval and reprocessing of traumatic memories that are often encoded in images rather than in words. On a macro level, they can help to reconstruct a group narrative of a disaster as well as mobilise people back into control of their lives. This paper researches a

Issues in the support and disaster preparedness of severely disabled children in affected areas.

Relative to their numbers, more than twice the number of disabled children fell victim to the Great East Japan Earthquake than did normal people. It was important to find out needs and provide support, as the needs of disabled children vulnerable to the disaster, such as a shortage of diapers of the right size for disabled children in the affected areas, were not given priority. In addition, the role of coordinators to spread word of who needed what and where, and linking this to specific support, was important. Regions and authorities need to determine how disabled children are to be evacuate

Exploring disparities between global HIV/AIDS funding and recent tsunami relief efforts: an ethical analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To contrast relief efforts for the 26 December 2004 tsunami with current global HIV/AIDS relief efforts and analyse possible reasons for the disparity. METHODS: Literature review and ethical analysis. RESULTS: Just over 273,000 people died in the tsunami, resulting in relief efforts of more than US$10 bn, which is sufficient to achieve the United Nation's long-term recovery plan for South East Asia. In contrast, 14 times more people died from HIV/AIDS in 2004, with UNAIDS predicting a US$8 bn funding gap for HIV/AIDS in developing nations between now and 2007. This disparity raise

Correlates of risk-taking behaviour and suicidality among humanitarian aid workers.

In an era of high need for humanitarian assistance, humanitarian aid workers face increased exposure to potentially traumatic events and, correspondingly, a greater risk of psychological distress (e.g., anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], and burnout). Less studied among humanitarian workers, however, are other known correlates of trauma-exposure: complex PTSD, risk-taking behaviours, and suicidality. The current study examined levels of trauma exposure and rates of trauma-related mental health disorders, risk-taking behaviour, and levels of suicidality among a sample (N

Newborns in crisis: An outline of neonatal ethical dilemmas in humanitarian medicine.

Newborn infants are among those most severely affected by humanitarian crises. Aid organisations increasingly recognise the necessity to provide for the medical needs of newborns, however, this may generate distinctive ethical questions for those providing humanitarian medical care. Medical ethical approaches to neonatal care familiar in other settings may not be appropriate given the diversity and volatility of humanitarian disasters, and the extreme resource limitations commonly faced by humanitarian aid missions. In this paper, we first systematically review existing guidelines relating to

Stressful but rewarding: Norwegian personnel mobilised for the 2004 tsunami disaster.

Adequate responses to disasters and emergency situations rely, among other factors, on coping abilities in disaster workers and emergency personnel. In this study, different aspects of disaster-related stressors and training/experience were investigated in Norwegian personnel (n = 581) mobilised for the 2004 tsunami disaster. The level of stress reactions, measured nine to ten months after the tsunami, was relatively low in this sample, indicating that the personnel coped well with the challenges of the disaster. The level of intrusive memories was higher in disaster-area personnel (n = 335) t

Terrorism in Croatia.

INTRODUCTION: This report illustrates Croatia's experience with the terrorist attack in the city of Rijeka in October 1995. Also, the intention of this report is to outline how emergency services were functioning in this sudden-onset situation. METHODS: The medical documentation of 27 wounded citizens in the attack was analyzed and the appearance of bodily wounds, severity of wounds, and the mechanisms of injury are described. From the forensic medical report, the wounds and damages sustained by the terrorist also were analyzed. All findings were compared with similar cases from around the wo

Voluntary and professional disaster-workers: similarities and differences in reactions.

Forty-three rescuers responding to a bus crash that killed 12 children and 4 adults and injured many more answered questionnaires at 1 and 13 months following the crash. This study compared the responses of the voluntary and professional helpers, using the Impact of Event Scale (IES) and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). For all helpers taken together, the decline in IES-intrusion and IES-total scores was significant from 1 to 13 months. The voluntary helpers reported significantly more intrusion and avoidance on the IES at 1 month than professional helpers, and for avoidance the volunta

The impact of internal displacement on child mortality in post-earthquake Haiti: a difference-in-differences analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Haiti earthquake in 2010 resulted in 1.5 million internally displaced people (IDP), yet little is known about the impact of displacement on health. In this study, we estimate the impact of displacement on infant and child mortality and key health-behavior mechanisms. METHODS: We employ a difference-in-differences (DID) design with coarsened exact matching (CEM) to ensure comparability among groups with different displacement status using the 2012 Haiti Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). The participants are 21,417 births reported by a nationally representative sample of 14,2

[Emergency rescue in accidents with HDR afterloading units].

PROBLEM: HDR brachyradiotherapy has minimized the exposure to radiation of the personnel working in this field. Nonetheless there are periodically reported troubles with afterloading units concerning the retraction of sources that require immediate action for the limitation of possible damage. LEGAL PRINCIPLES ACCORDING TO THE GERMAN REGULATION CONCERNING PROTECTION AGAINST RADIATION (STRAHLENSCHUTZVERORDNUNG = STRLSCHV): If in afterloading brachyradiotherapy the radiation source remains extended through malfunction we deal with an emergency according to the StrlSchV. The rescue personnel shou

[Burundi: humanitarian mission (January-April 1994)].

The 1993 assassination of the President of the Republic of Burundi led to a bloodbath resulting in the killing of 700 000 people and 300 000 refugees in camps scattered throughout the country. After the emergency surgery phase, the French cooperation which was in charge of health care in the Gitega sector requested a humanitary mission. Two public health physicians, a polyvalent clinical physician, and two field nurses were sent. All were armed service personnel. From January to April 1994, after a preliminary assessment of the situation, this mission took charge of health services as well as

How Health Systems 'Software' Factors Affect Frontline Health Workers' Humanitarian Response Efforts During Infectious Disease Outbreaks in the Rohingya Refugee Camps, Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

Humanitarian settings face a growing healthcare workforce crisis marked by staff shortages, unsafe working conditions, and limited professional development. Despite being critical intermediaries in outbreak responses, demands on health workers come at a substantial cost to their health and wellbeing. Research on health workers responding to the Rohingya refugee crisis in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, is limited. Focussing on health systems "software" (relationships between people and structures), this study explores health workers' interactions with different levels of governance structures, includ
