Computer-assisted remedial reading intervention for school beginners at risk for reading disability.

The aim of the longitudinal study was to investigate whether a computer application designed for remedial reading training can enhance letter knowledge, reading accuracy, fluency, and spelling of at-risk children. The participants, 7-year-old Finnish school beginners (N=166), were assigned to 1 of 3 groups: (a) regular remedial reading intervention (n=25), (b) computer-assessed reading intervention (n=25), and (c) mainstream reading instruction (n=116). Based on the results, computer-assisted remedial reading intervention was highly beneficial, whereas regular type of intervention was less suc

Computer speech-based remediation for reading disabilities: the size of spelling-to-sound unit in a transparent orthography.

This study was designed to assess the effects of four reading-training procedures for children with reading disabilities (RD) in a transparent orthography, with the aim of examining the effects of different spelling-to-sound units in computer speech-based reading. We selected a sample of 83 Spanish children aged between 7 years 1 month and 10 years 6 months (M = 105.2, SD = 7.8) whose pseudoword reading performance was below the 25th percentile and IQ > 90. The participants were randomly assigned to five groups: (a) the whole-word training group (WW) (n = 17), (b) the syllable training group (

Specificity of treatment effects for learning disabilities in a boy prenatally exposed to dilantin.

The present case study provides evidence that a specific deficit can be improved by a treatment specific intervention in a boy who was prenatally exposed to Dilantin and presented with a learning disability. After implementation of a focused intervention for reading, standardized test scores revealed that the child demonstrated a dramatic improvement in reading performance, but remained consistent in other academic areas. This indicated that his reading improvement was the direct effect of specific training in reading, but did not generalize to other content areas. This finding is significant

Developmental dyscalculia and medical assessment.

Developmental dyscalculia (DC) is a primary cognitive disorder of childhood manifested by disturbance of arithmetic ability. As an isolated learning disability (LD), it is usually treated by remedial education and not referred for further medical evaluation. We examined a group of 7 third-grade children with DC attending a mainstream school who had not progressed academically in spite of specific special education intervention. We were able to identify in all 7 children neurological conditions that had direct bearing on the children's cognitive disabilities and remedial programs. One child had

Can dyslexia be treated? Treatment-specific and generalized treatment effects in dyslexic children's response to remediation.

A total of 178 reading disabled children were randomly assigned to one of three treatment conditions providing training in word recognition and decoding skills (DS), oral and written language (OWLS), or classroom survival skills (CSS. an alternative treatment control). Pre- and post-treatment comparisons on an array of standardized and experimental measures indicated that the two experimental treatments (DS, OWLS) resulted in improvement on selected tests significantly greater than that resulting from a third treatment intervention which controlled for treatment time and individual attention (

The effects of reciprocal peer tutoring and group contingencies on the academic performance of elementary school children.

We evaluated the effects of reciprocal peer tutoring combined with group reinforcement contingencies on the arithmetic performance of 12 underachieving fifth-grade students. Results indicated that the intervention increased the students' arithmetic performance to a level indistinguishable from their classmates during treatment and 12-week follow-up phases. Pre-, post-, and follow-up sociometric data indicated that the students who participated in the treatment groups increased their amount of peer affiliation with other treatment group members.

Contact dermatitis and workforce economics.

The roots of education in patch testing begin with Jadassohn and have been passed down through generations of dermatologists through didactic teachings and mentoring. Currently, we are faced with workforce economics tipping the balance of dermatology toward cosmetic and surgical practices. This imbalance is easily found in the subspecialty of contact dermatitis, where the current demand for patch test services is on the rise and the number of new dermatology-based patch test providers cannot keep up with the current demand. Steps are being made to remedy this discrepancy through societies and

The effect of computer-assisted therapeutic practice for children with handwriting deficit: a comparison with the effect of the traditional sensorimotor approach.

The objective of this study was to compare the effect of computer-assisted practice with the sensorimotor approach on the remediation of handwriting problems in children with dysgraphia. In a randomized controlled trial, experiments were conducted to verify the intervention effect. Forty two children with handwriting deficit were assigned to computer-assisted instruction, sensorimotor training, or a control group. Handwriting performance was measured using the elementary reading/writing test and computerized handwriting evaluation before and after 6 weeks of intervention. Repeated-measures ANO

[Specific remedial therapy in a specialist unit: evaluation of 31 children with severe, specific language or reading disorders over one academic year].

INTRODUCTION: Up to 3 percent of the children in France present severe and specific language and/or reading disorders, despite regular remedial therapies. Few studies have measured the effectiveness of treatment administered in a specialist unit. PATIENTS AND METHOD: The aims of this study, focusing on children diagnosed as dysphasic and/or dyslexic, were: During the academic year 2001-2002, 31 children (18 dyslexic and 13 dysphasic) were attending school in our unit. The teaching program and intensive speech therapy (3 hours/week) were tailored for each child according to his/her specific di

Naming difficulties in children with dyslexia: application of the tip-of-the-tongue paradigm.

The present study used the tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) experimental paradigm in a picture naming task to explore the source of the naming deficits of children with dyslexia. Compared with a control group of typically developing readers, the children with dyslexia showed fewer correct responses and spontaneous recalls, more don't know (DK) and TOT responses, and less accurate feeling of knowing (FOK) judgments. When they failed to retrieve a target word, the children with dyslexia did not differ from the control group in the partial semantic information they provided, but they gave less valid and m

Remediating the core deficits of developmental reading disability: a double-deficit perspective.

The double-deficit hypothesis (Wolf, 1997; Wolf & Bowers, 1999, this issue) contends that deficits in phonological awareness and deficits in visual naming speed represent two independent causal impediments to reading acquisition for children with developmental reading disabilities (RD). One hundred and sixty-six children with severe RD from 7 to 13 years of age were classified into three deficit subgroups according to a double-deficit framework. A total of 140 children with RD, 84% of the sample, were classified; 54% demonstrated a double deficit (DD), 22% a phonological deficit only (PHON), a

When academic assistance is not enough: addressing the mental health issues of adolescents and adults with learning disabilities.

This article focuses on an answer to a critical question for adolescents and adults with learning disabilities: How can professionals assist students with learning disabilities who have psychosocial issues that appear to be affecting their academic progress and life adjustment? Inherent in this inquiry are other, equally important issues, such as: How do learning disabilities service providers know when to involve other service providers? What are the steps in referring a student for further assistance with different mental health issues? When are team interventions necessary? How are team int

Impact of community-based instruction on the development of adaptive behavior of secondary-level students with mental retardation.

The impact of community-based instruction on the development of adaptive behavior in 34 high school students with moderate to profound mental retardation was examined. Results were: (a) Students made statistically significant gains in three of four domains of the Scales of Independent Behavior; (b) student IQ, level of student ambulation, and presence of behavior problems were not significant predictors of the amount of community-based instruction students received; and (c) the amount of community-based instruction was a more powerful predictor of gains in these domains than were IQ, level of

A Systematic Review of Multimodal Frameworks for Assessing Health Vulnerability in Academicians Across Ergonomic, Lifestyle, and Dietary Domains.

Background: Lifestyle challenges such as prolonged sitting, irregular dietary habits, high stress levels, and lack of physical activity have become increasingly common among working professionals. All these factors contribute to the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and high blood pressure, which in turn result in reduced work performance and quality of life and may further affect health services access through increase healthcare needs. The teaching environment, like many other work environments, is mentally, emotionally, and practically demanding, and it puts

Improving reading skills in children with dyslexia: efficacy studies on a newly proposed remedial intervention-repeated reading with vocal music masking (RVM).

In this work, two different studies are examined to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel intervention program for the improvement of reading ability in children with dyslexia, known as repeated reading with vocal music masking (RVM). The proposed remedial approach is inspired by Breznitz's original work. The studies assess a 5-week program of intensive RVM training in a pre-post-test clinical paradigm, as well as a longitudinal paradigm where it is compared to 8 months of the standard remediation program (SRP). The results of both studies support the efficacy of the newly proposed RVM method.

Differentiating the neural response to intervention in children with developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is associated with functional abnormalities within reading areas of the brain. For some children diagnosed with dyslexia, phonologically based remediation programs appear to rehabilitate brain function in key reading areas (Shaywitz et al., Biological Psychiatry 55: 101-110, 2004; Simos et al., Neuroscience 58: 1203-1213, 2002). However, a non-trivial number of children diagnosed with dyslexia fail to respond to these interventions (Torgesen, Learning Disabilities Research & Practice 15: 55-64, 2000). A cross-sectional fMRI study investigating post-treatment effects was

Learning disabilities in the community college and the role of disability services departments.

The community college offers educational opportunities to a diverse population of students. Many of the students attending the community college are considered non-traditional, and have numerous factors not faced by traditional-age students that can affect retention in this population. Learning disabled (LD) students attend the community college at a higher rate than other higher education institutions (Barnett, 1996; Bigaj, 1995; & Henderson, 1992). The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) reported that LDs now constitute the largest single category of disability served by disabi

Psychoanalysis as cognitive remediation: Dynamic and Vygotskian perspectives in the analysis of an early adolescent dyslexic girl.

The interface of neurocognitive problems and dynamic concerns are examined in the treatment of an early adolescent dyslexic girl. Despite previous intensive remediation, she had been unable to master reading and spelling, but made remarkable progress after a relatively brief period of psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytic and Vygotskian perspectives are integrated to provide a model of how play, within the analytic context, is mutative for learning disabled children. Through the process of reexteriorization in the transference, play allows for the interpretation and resolution of traumatic situations

A controlled trial of cognitive remediation in schizophrenia.

A randomized, controlled trial of a 3-month cognitive remediation program was examined for its efficacy at ameliorating deficits in social and emotion perception in 42 hospitalized patients with schizophrenia. Generalization of training effects to attention, memory, and executive functioning was also examined. The program included an eclectic mix of self-instruction, memory enhancement, inductive reasoning, and compensatory training procedures, while the control condition included participation in a leisure group that was matched to the experimental group for staff involvement time.
