Insulin treatment improves the spontaneous remission of neonatal streptozotocin diabetes in the rat.

Neonatal rats injected with streptozotocin (STZ, 100 mg/kg) at birth exhibit an acute diabetes that is characterized by a spontaneous and incomplete remission. The short- and long-term effect of exogenous insulin on the course of this neonatal diabetes has been studied. Insulin treatment (20 mU/g body wt./day, for 4 days) diminished the percentage of glycosuric animals on day 5 after birth (10%) as compared with the percentage in the non-insulin-treated diabetics (STZ) (67%). On the 14th day, the body weight and the pancreatic insulin content of insulin-treated animals (STZ + I) were significa

[Spontaneous remission of neuroendocrine diseases due to apoplexy in hormonally active pituitary adenomas].

This article presents a literature review on the topic of remission of severe neuroendocrine diseases due to adenoma apoplexy. The discussion addresses possible mechanisms underlying apoplexy in pituitary adenomas. Additionally, two clinical cases of spontaneous remission of acromegaly and Cushing's disease in patients hospitalized at Endocrinology research Centre for neurosurgical treatment are discussed. These cases highlight the need for thorough examination and retesting of patients with hormonally active tumors immediately prior to neurosurgical interventions.

Slightly Symptomatic Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy-Related Inflammation with Spontaneous Remission in Four Months.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related inflammation (CAA-ri) is a rare variant of CAA with autoimmune inflammation. A 77-year-old female experienced light-headedness during walking and mild ataxic gait without any other objective neuropsychological deficits. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an area of abnormal signal and mild parenchymal swelling in the right parietal lobe, indicating vasogenic edema. T2⁎-weighted gradient echo imaging revealed some subcortical microbleeds in the same lesion. Based on the proposed criteria for CAA-ri, she was diagnosed with probable CAA-ri. After 4

Burning mouth syndrome: a retrospective study investigating spontaneous remission and response to treatments.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the spontaneous remission rate of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) in a group of subjects suffering from this syndrome. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The medical records of BMS patients attending the Unit of Oral Medicine (1995-2002) were reviewed. The patients with a follow-up period of at least 18 months were then contacted over phone and interviewed using a structured ad hoc questionnaire to record their current symptoms and data about their treatment responses to the therapies. RESULTS: Forty-eight women and five men with a mean age of 67.7 ye

Temporary Spontaneous Remission of Adult Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Associated with Scrub Typhus Infection.

INTRODUCTION: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in adult patients usually poses a treatment challenge with intensive chemotherapeutic agents. Prognosis is worse in comparison to pediatric patients owing to disease biology and associated comorbidities. Spontaneous remission of ALL is rare and warrants close follow-up for progression. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report the case of a male in his 40s initially admitted for febrile illness with pancytopenia; later, his serology was positive for scrub typhus infection, and he was managed for the same with antimicrobials. Due to the persistence o

Bladder Amyloidosis With Pulmonary Lesions: A Case of Spontaneous Remission After Transurethral Resection.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder amyloidosis is a rare condition characterized by amyloid fibril deposition in the bladder, often mimicking bladder cancer. Diagnosis requires histological analysis of the examination, and treatment typically involves transurethral resection. CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old male presented with gross hematuria. Computed tomography suggested bladder cancer with pulmonary metastases. However, due to the extent of the bladder tumor, complete resection was not feasible, and only a limited transurethral resection was performed for diagnostic purposes. Pathological examination

Upregulation of CD39 During Gout Attacks Promotes Spontaneous Remission of Acute Gouty Inflammation.

Gout is a self-limiting form of inflammatory arthropathy caused by the formation of urate crystals due to hyperuricemia. The resolution of gout involves the transition of proinflammatory M1-type macrophages to anti-inflammatory M2-type macrophages, as well as neutrophil-mediated extracellular trap (NET) formation. However, the underlying mechanisms of these changes are not clear. Studies have confirmed that high expression of CD39 on macrophages and neutrophils can trigger the polarization of macrophages from a proinflammatory state to an anti-inflammatory state. Recent studies have shown that

Caloric Restriction and Remission of Severe Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria: An Autobiographical Case Report.

In this autobiographical case report, the physician-author-patient is documenting the remission of his own severe chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) in response to caloric restriction and subsequent weight loss. To my knowledge, this is the first reported case of CSU remission secondary to weight loss in the literature. CSU is a common debilitating pruritic skin condition that carries a significant economic and psychological burden. Currently, the mainstay of CSU treatment is symptom control, rather than seeking to achieve complete remission. Despite some recent retrospective studies reportin

Nine-year follow-up from onset to spontaneous complete remission of cap polyposis.

A 58-year-old woman with severe constipation and a habit of straining at defecation was diagnosed to have mucosal prolapse syndrome. One year later, her primary symptom changed to bloody diarrhea. The colonoscopic and histological findings were consistent with the characteristics of cap polyposis. After nine years, her symptoms and colonoscopic abnormalities disappeared completely without treatment. For two years since that time, the patient has remained well with normal endoscopy findings and a high value of anti-Helicobacter pylori immunoglobulin G. In this case, cap polyposis might have dev

[Case of intravascular lymphoma diagnosed by transbronchial lung biopsy, with transient spontaneous remission].

A 70-year-old man visited hospital because of intermittent fever (about 38 degrees C) and night sweat. He had a history of smoking of 1 pack a day for 35 years. He had no abnormal findings on physical examination, but had abnormal laboratory findings, including elevated C-reactive protein, lactate dehydrogenase and soluble interleukin-2 receptor levels. Although malignant lymphoma was suspected, his symptoms and laboratory findings resolved spontaneously. However, intermittent fever and night sweat reoccurred 19 months after his first presentation, and he visited our hospital with dyspnea the

Spontaneous Remission of Epileptic Seizures Following Norovirus Infection in a Patient With DNM1 Encephalopathy.

Epileptic seizures can be worsened by infections; however, they sometimes disappear or decrease after an acute viral infection, although this is rare. We report the spontaneous remission of epileptic seizures following norovirus-induced viral gastroenteritis in a boy with DNM1 encephalopathy. He had clonic seizures daily from the age of two months and developed epileptic spasms at 14 months of age; he was admitted to the hospital at this time. A physical examination revealed hypotonia, strabismus, tongue protrusion with drooping, and widely spaced teeth. Although brain magnetic resonance imagi

Spontaneous remission of eosinophilic granuloma of the maxilla after incisional biopsy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), previously known as Histiocytosis X, is an infrequent disease that congregates a wide spectrum of clinical presentations with variable systemic involvement. Unification of these diseases under only one category is based on the almost identical histopathologic features of the lesions, but the etiology and proper approach for each presentation remains controversial. The localized alternative of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LLCH), known as Eosinophilic Granuloma (EG) of bone, is the predominant clinical presentation of LCH. The maxilla is involve

Social anxiety disorder, a lifelong disorder? A review of the spontaneous remission and its predictors.

OBJECTIVE: Based on clinical observations, social anxiety disorder (SAD) is usually described as a chronic disorder. Its natural course in the community is less clear. METHOD: The present review summarises prospective and retrospective spontaneous remission rates of SAD in the community and its predictors that were published after 1987. Remission rates were specified as partial, defined as still having social fears, but not fulfilling the diagnostic criteria, and full, defined as having no social fears anymore. RESULTS: In prospective studies, remission rates of SAD varied between 36% and 93

Recurrence of primary hyperparathyroidism following spontaneous remission with intracapsular hemorrhage of a parathyroid adenoma.

A few patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) have a chance of spontaneous remission by either infarction of or hemorrhage into or around the parathyroid adenoma. In most cases, biochemical derangements associated with PHPT are permanently improved after spontaneous remission. Here we report a case with a recurrence of PHPT 4 months after spontaneous remission with acute intracapsular hemorrhage of parathyroid adenoma. In the literature, only two cases have been reported to have experienced a recurrence of clinical features of PHPT after infarction but not hemorrhage of parathyroid ad

[Fetal intraventricular hemorrhage caused by cerebral contusion, and with spontaneous remission. Contribution of MRI].

We report a case of fetal ventricular hemorrhage which occurred at 27.5 weeks gestation and caused by fetal brain contusion after a maternal traumatism. Ultrasound examination evidenced ventriculomegaly and an intraventricular clot which were confirmed by MRI. We discuss the interest of combining ultrasound and MRI of the fetal brain for the investigation and follow-up of fetal brain trauma. The patient gave birth to an eutrophic normal boy. The child is normal at 12 months follow-up.

Spontaneous Remission of Minimal Change Disease in a Colon Cancer Patient: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Minimal change disease (MCD) is most often primary but may occur secondary to other systemic diseases such as malignancy. In secondary MCD, spontaneous remission of nephrotic syndrome after the treatment of related diseases without steroid therapy is rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old man visited the outpatient clinic with foamy urine and generalized edema that had persisted for 2 months. The patient had nephrotic syndrome. Before a kidney biopsy, he underwent several tests to determine the secondary cause of the nephrotic syndrome. The serum CEA was slightly elevated, and c
