Acute disruption of select steroid receptor coactivators prevents reproductive behavior in rats and unmasks genetic adaptation in knockout mice.

Estrogen (E) and progesterone exert profound influence on development and reproduction. In vitro, steroid receptor coactivators (SRCs) are nuclear proteins that interact with DNA-bound steroid receptors to potentiate their transcriptional efficiency. We examined the effects of antisense oligonucleotides to SRC-1, SRC-2, and SRC-3 on female sexual behavior and steroid receptor-mediated transcription. Rat (r) SRC-1, rSRC-2, and rSRC-3 genes were cloned. Our results reveal a significant inhibitory effect by antisense (AS) to SRC-1 and SRC-2, but not SRC-3, on hormone-induced reproductive behavior

Developmental fluoxetine exposure and prenatal stress alter sexual differentiation of the brain and reproductive behavior in male rat offspring.

Depression during pregnancy and postpartum is a significant health problem and affects up to 20% of women. While selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) medications are the drug of choice for treatment of maternal depression, the combined effect of maternal depression and perinatal SSRI exposure on offspring development is poorly investigated. Our aim was to determine the role of exposure to fluoxetine during development on sexual behavior and sexually dimorphic brain structures in male offspring using a rodent model of maternal adversity. Sprague-Dawley rat dams were stressed during ges

Genetic merit for fertility traits in Holstein cows: II. Ovarian follicular and corpus luteum dynamics, reproductive hormones, and estrus behavior.

The objective of this study was to characterize the estrous cycle of cows with similar proportions of Holstein genetics, similar genetic merit for milk production traits, but with good (Fert+) or poor (Fert-) genetic merit for fertility traits. In total, 37 lactating cows were enrolled on a protocol to synchronize estrus. Nineteen Fert+ and 12 Fert- cows that successfully ovulated a dominant follicle and established a corpus luteum underwent daily transrectal ultrasonography. Blood sampling was carried out at 8-h intervals from d 0 to 6 and from d 15 to ovulation, and once daily from d 7 to 15

High-risk fertility behavior among reproductive age women in extremely high and very high maternal mortality sub-Saharan African countries.

ABSTRACT: High-risk fertility behavior is a leading contributor to adverse maternal and child health outcomes. This study assessed the prevalence and determinants of high-risk fertility behavior among reproductive-age women in sub-Saharan Africa. We conducted a secondary analysis of Demographic and Health Survey data from eight sub-Saharan African countries with extremely high or very high maternal mortality. A weighted sample of 78,353 reproductive-age women who had given birth in the five years preceding the survey was included. A multilevel mixed-effects binary logistic regression model was

Association of Sleep Traits, Physical Activity, and Sedentary Leisure Behavior With Female Reproductive Health: A Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Analysis.

PURPOSE: Living habits affect female endocrine function and fertility, along with aging and other life factors. Because of this, female reproductive health can be promoted through living habit adjustment. METHODS: We used two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis with summary datasets from a genome-wide association study to investigate the causal relationships between sleep traits, sedentary leisure behavior, physical activity, and reproductive health traits in women, calculating odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Exposure genetic instruments were used for variants that w

Haploinsufficiency of SIX3 Abolishes Male Reproductive Behavior Through Disrupted Olfactory Development, and Impairs Female Fertility Through Disrupted GnRH Neuron Migration.

Mating behavior in males and females is dependent on olfactory cues processed through both the main olfactory epithelium (MOE) and the vomeronasal organ (VNO). Signaling through the MOE is critical for the initiation of male mating behavior, and the loss of MOE signaling severely compromises this comportment. Here, we demonstrate that dosage of the homeodomain gene Six3 affects the degree of development of MOE but not the VNO. Anomalous MOE development in Six3 heterozygote mice leads to hyposmia, specifically disrupting male mounting behavior by impairing detection of volatile female estrus ph

Control of male reproductive behavior by the central nervous system of Drosophila: dissection of a courtship pathway by genetic mosaics.

In gynandromorphs of Drosophila, a detailed examination was made of the association between male courtship behavior and the chromosomal genotype of various parts of the central nervous system. Mosaic flies that behave as males repeatedly show a shorter courtship than normal males. If there is to be male behavior, the posterior dorsal brain must be haplo-X on at least one side for occurrence of the early courtship events. Tapping, following of females and wing extension. Licking (proboscis extension) has nearly the same focus but is submissive; that is, male tissue must be present in both left

Influence of short-term dexamethasone-induced stress on behavioral, physiological and reproductive performance of growing rabbit bucks.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how growing rabbit bucks responded to stress induced by dexamethasone (DEX). Sixteen New Zealand White male rabbits (4-5 months old, 2.75 ± 0.07 kg) were randomly assigned to four groups. After a one-week preliminary period under the same management, three groups received intramuscular DEX injections for seven consecutive days at doses of 1, 2, and 3 mg/kg body weight (D01, D02, and D03, respectively), while the control group (D00) received saline. Reproductive, behavioral, and physiological stress indicators were assessed throughout the preliminary

Adaptive changes in behavioral and physiological traits during worker-reproductive transition in Reticulitermes chinensis (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae).

The differentiation of workers into supplementary reproductives (ergatoids) is an important component of reproductive plasticity in termites, but the behavioral and physiological changes accompanying this transition remain incompletely understood. We used Reticulitermes chinensis (Snyder) to examine allogrooming, locomotor behavior, egg production, enzyme activity, and gene expression during the worker-to-ergatoid transition. The first ergatoids appeared within 2 days after orphaning, and female ergatoids outnumbered male ergatoids. Ergatoids that survived to the end of the observation period

Behavioral Plasticity of Dung Beetles During Reproduction Does Not Fully Rescue Offspring from Climate Warming.

Empirical studies have documented a global shift in temperature that threatens the survival of many species. Often, an animal's first response to changing environmental conditions is to alter behavioral phenotypes, such as parental care. When adaptive, behavioral plasticity of parental care can buffer offspring from changing environmental conditions to maintain fitness. However, we have limited understanding of how adult behaviors during warming impact offspring phenotypes and survival. In addition, comparatively few studies of behavioral responses to experimental warming use a repeated measur

Head Pain Reproduction and Resolution Behavior in Response to Sustained Mobilization of the Upper Cervical Spine: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Reproduction and resolution of head pain with sustained upper cervical mobilization has been proposed as a diagnostic indicator of Cervicogenic Headache (CGH). However, there has been little focus on describing head pain response during the application of these maneuvers. The purpose of this study was to describe the head pain response during the performance of sustained upper cervical spine mobilization in people with probable CGH. METHODS: In this case series of 20 individuals with probable CGH as defined under the International Headache Society criteria, were assessed by one ex

Changes in Reproductive Health Information-Seeking Behaviors After the Dobbs Decision: Systematic Search of the Wikimedia Database.

BACKGROUND: After the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, confusion followed regarding the legality of abortion in different states across the country. Recent studies found increased Google searches for abortion-related terms in restricted states after the Dobbsv. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision was leaked. As patients and providers use Wikipedia (Wikimedia Foundation) as a predominant medical information source, we hypothesized that changes in reproductive health information-seeking behavior could be better understood by examining Wikipedia article traffic. OBJECTIVE: This

Metabolic, behavioral, and reproductive effects of vertical sleeve gastrectomy in an obese rat model of polycystic ovary syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinopathy affecting women of reproductive age. Its clinical expression is diverse, including metabolic, behavioral, and reproductive effects, with many affected by obesity and decreased quality of life. Women with PCOS who have undergone surgically induced weight loss have reported tremendous benefit, not only with weight loss, but also improvement of hyperandrogenism and menstrual cyclicity. METHODS: In a rat model of PCOS achieved via chronic administration of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) exposure, we investigated the ability

Metabolomic, behavioral, and reproductive effects of the synthetic estrogen 17 α-ethinylestradiol on the unionid mussel Lampsilis fasciola.

The endocrine disrupting effects of estrogenic compounds in surface waters on fish, such as feminization of males and altered sex ratios, may also occur in aquatic invertebrates. However, the underlying mechanisms of action and toxicity, especially in native freshwater mussels (Order Unionoida), remain undefined. This study evaluated the effects of a 12-day exposure of 17 α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), a synthetic estrogen in oral contraceptives commonly found in surface waters, on the behavior, condition, metabolism, and reproductive status of Lampsilis fasciola. Adult mussels of both sexes were e

DHEA model of PCOS selectively alters reproductive but not metabolic or behavioral phenotypes in female Long-Evans rats.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common reproductive-metabolic disorder in women of reproductive age, yet preclinical models show considerable variability in their ability to capture its multiple diagnostic phenotypes and various non-diagnostic features. Androgen-based rodent models are widely used to mimic clinical hyperandrogenism; however, studies using dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), the most abundant circulating androgen in humans, have produced inconsistent findings across metabolic and behavioral domains. Here, we systematically evaluated a DHEA-based model of PCOS in female

Effects of Tetramethyl Bisphenol F Exposure on Daphnia magna Growth, Reproduction, Locomotor Behavior and Transcriptomic Responses.

Environmental concerns have intensified due to the widespread use of bisphenol analogues as BPA alternatives. In this study, we assessed the toxicity of Tetramethyl Bisphenol F (TMBPF) on Daphnia magna and investigated the underlying mechanisms, at multiple biological levels, encompassing transcriptomic pathway alterations, growth and reproductive impairment, and behavioral changes. The 48 h EC50 was 1.30 mg/L, which is lower than that of BPA, BPF, BPS, and BPAF. The 21 d NOEC for reproduction was 0.20 mg/L, classifying TMBPF as a GHS Category 2 chronic aquatic toxicant. Chronic, low concentration pesticide exposure alters reproduction and behavior in the intertidal sea anemone, Anthopleura elegantissima.

Widespread pesticide and herbicide use paired with frequent transport away from application sites has led to pesticide presence in nearly all terrestrial and aquatic environments globally. Pesticides have unintentional toxic effects on non-target organisms by interfering with cellular processes, behavior, feeding, reproduction, and disrupting endocrine processes. The aggregating anemone, Anthopleura elegantissima, is an important species along the North American Pacific coast due to its symbiotic relationships that contribute to high productivity, and its clonal abundance that structures the r

Transgenerational Effects of Prenatal Endocrine Disruption on Reproductive and Sociosexual Behaviors in Sprague Dawley Male and Female Rats.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) lead to endocrine and neurobehavioral changes, particularly due to developmental exposures during gestation and early life. Moreover, intergenerational and transgenerational phenotypic changes may be induced by germline exposure (F2) and epigenetic germline transmission (F3) generation, respectively. Here, we assessed reproductive and sociosexual behavioral outcomes of prenatal Aroclor 1221 (A1221), a lightly chlorinated mix of PCBs known to have weakly estrogenic mechanisms of action; estradiol benzoate (EB), a positive control; or vehicle (3% DMSO in ses

Systematic evaluation of graphene quantum dot toxicity to male mouse sexual behaviors, reproductive and offspring health.

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have attracted considerable attention across multiple fields, particularly biomedical research. However, the effects of GQDs on reproductive and offspring health in mammals are unclear. Here, we show that GQD exposure via oral gavage or intravenous injection had no effect on the frequency and timing of sexual behaviors in male mice. GQD-exposed male mice retained healthy structural and functional reproductive physiology (e.g., production and storage of healthy sperm, maintenance of normal total protein and key enzyme concentrations in testes) of the testes and epid
