Research interests of physicians in two practice-based primary care research networks.

Regional practice-based network research has grown significantly in the past 15 years. Previous studies have reported on characteristics of physicians who participate in network research, but little is known about the specific a priori research interests of practicing physicians. Knowledge of such interests could be useful in planning network research studies. We conducted a mail survey to assess the research interests of primary care physicians in two contiguous research networks at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and at Stanford University. Among 120 respondents from the

Global research requires global researchers: Opportunities and challenges for capacity-building.

Inclusive global theories of child development require local researchers who spearhead research within their own communities. This means creating pathways for researchers from underrepresented contexts to lead projects, define priorities, and collaborate as equal partners, rather than merely act as data collectors. This capacity-building holds the promise of generating more accurate and equitable developmental science research.

Research progress of Sinomenium in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and suggestions for future research.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune joint disease. Its main pathological manifestations are joint cartilage, bone tissue injury, synovial hyperplasia, and chronic inflammation. At present, the pathogenesis of the disease has not been fully defined, and delaying the disease to improve joint function is the existing treatment. Sinomenium (SIN) is an effective ingredient in Sinomenium acutum (Thunb.) Rehd. et Wils., with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immunosuppressive, anti-tumor, and other pharmacological activities, which is quite effective in the treatment of RA. There are many S

Brief history of the Society for Melanoma Research: A community of clinicians, researchers, and friends.

To commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Society of Melanoma Research and the first International Melanoma Research Congress held in June of 2003, we have described in brief, how the Society for Melanoma Research (SMR) began, the purpose, goals, and governance of the SMR, and how the society has evolved to support new melanoma researchers. In celebration of the immense progress in treating melanoma patients over the last 20 years and the impact of the SMR on these advances, we have highlighted memories and insight from early SMR members and founders.

Early-Career Autism Researchers Are Shifting Their Research Directions: Tragedy or Opportunity?

Early-career researchers (ECRs) are among the most creative, talented, and energetic researchers, and they play an important role in knowledge production and pushing scientific boundaries. Recent debates have implied that many early-career autism researchers are compelled to shift their areas of focus within autism research as a consequence of their work being scrutinized by the autistic and autism communities. In this Perspective, I draw on my own experience as an early-career autism researcher having recently pivoted my research focus to become more aligned with community priorities. I refle

Involving patients as research partners in research in rheumatology: a literature review in 2023.

OBJECTIVE: The inclusion of patient research partners (PRPs) in research projects is increasingly recognised and recommended in rheumatology. The level of involvement of PRPs in translational research in rheumatology remains unknown, while in randomised clinical trials (RCTs), it has been reported to be 2% in 2020. Therefore, we aimed to assess the involvement of PRPs in recent translational studies and RCTs in rheumatology. METHODS: We conducted a scoping literature review of the 80 most recent articles (40 translational studies and 40 RCTs) from four target diseases: rheumatoid arthritis, p

Researcher-practitioner partnerships and in-school laboratories facilitate translational research in reading.

Educational neuroscience approaches have helped to elucidate the brain basis of Reading Disability (RD) and of reading intervention response; however, there is often limited translation of this knowledge to the broader scientific and educational communities. Moreover, this work is traditionally lab-based, and thus the underlying theories and research questions are siloed from classroom practices. With growing awareness of the neurobiological origins of RD and increasing popularity of putative "brain-based" approaches in clinics and classrooms, it is imperative that we create more direct and bi

Translational research in Hirschprung's disease at the National Children's Research Centre in Dublin.

Hirschsprung's disease (HD) is a congenital condition characterised by aganglionosis in the distal bowel. Over the years, at the National Children's Research Centre (NCRC), HD has been one of the most prominent and successful research areas for Prof. Prem Puri's research team. Research fellows from around the world came to the NCRC to work on both animal and human studies of HD and, cumulatively, made important discoveries in this field, publishing a total of 144 HD articles in peer-reviewed journals. Through their published work, the NCRC has been recognised as the leading international centr

Toward a framework for best practices and research guidelines for perinatal depression research.

This review article highlights the current state of perinatal depression (PND) research including established standards of care and innovative research in progress. PND can have a significant adverse impact on mother, child, and family; however, to date, wide-scale identification, prevention, and treatment have been limited. PND is heterogenous in presentation with likely multifactorial etiologies for each woman. Challenges in PND research are discussed including a need for universal tools, standardized measures, benchmarks, and best practices. Current examples are reviewed that highlight appr

Reporting guidelines for oncology research: helping to maximise the impact of your research.

Many reports of health research omit important information needed to assess their methodological robustness and clinical relevance. Without clear and complete reporting, it is not possible to identify flaws or biases, reproduce successful interventions, or use the findings in systematic reviews or meta-analyses. The EQUATOR Network (http://www.equator-network.org/) promotes responsible reporting and the use of reporting guidelines to improve the accuracy, completeness, and transparency of health research. EQUATOR supports researchers by providing online resources and training. EQUATOR Oncology

Use and Interpretation of Propensity Scores in Aging Research: A Guide for Clinical Researchers.

Observational studies are an important source of evidence for evaluating treatment benefits and harms in older adults, but lack of comparability in the outcome risk factors between the treatment groups leads to confounding. Propensity score (PS) analysis is widely used in aging research to reduce confounding. Understanding the assumptions and pitfalls of common PS analysis methods is fundamental to applying and interpreting PS analysis. This review was developed based on a symposium of the American Geriatrics Society Annual Meeting on the use and interpretation of PS analysis in May 2014. PS a

Research priorities for neuroimmunology: identifying the key research questions to be addressed by 2030.

Neuroimmunology in the broadest sense is the study of interactions between the nervous and the immune systems. These interactions play important roles in health from supporting neural development, homeostasis and plasticity to modifying behaviour. Neuroimmunology is increasingly recognised as a field with the potential to deliver a significant positive impact on human health and treatment for neurological and psychiatric disorders. Yet, translation to the clinic is hindered by fundamental knowledge gaps on the underlying mechanisms of action or the optimal timing of an intervention, and a lack
