Canadian Active Living Environments 2.0: Development of an open-source pipeline for the replication and extension of the Canadian Active Living Environments measure.

BACKGROUND: The Canadian Active Living Environments (Can-ALE) project was developed in 2019 to provide a standardized, pan-Canadian indicator of how supportive neighbourhood built environments are for physical activity and active transportation, enabling comparisons across places and over time. Can-ALE 1.0 produced measures for the 2006 and 2016 census years, but it did not include 2011 or 2021. As well, the data and processing steps were not packaged in a fully reproducible format, limiting longitudinal analyses and replication. In this study, the original measure was replicated and extended

Does internet access make a difference for older adults' cognition in urban China? The moderating role of living arrangements.

Since the mid-1990s, information technology, particularly the diffusion of the internet, has brought tremendous changes to communication and social participation for people in China, including older adults. At the same time, modernisation and urbanisation have transformed the way many people in China live. The traditional multigenerational household-older adults living with adult children and grandchildren-is giving way to other living arrangements, such as living alone or with a spouse only. Using wave 1 of the World Health Organization Study on Global AGEing and Adult Health collected betwee

Beyond the care home walls: how organisational and neighbourhood environments influence community access for residents living with dementia.

Maintaining meaningful access to the surrounding community is increasingly recognised as a key component of well-being, quality of life, independence, identity, and social citizenship for people living with dementia. Institutions often act as gatekeepers, mediating residents' access to the surrounding neighbourhood. Yet little empirical evidence exists on how residential care facilities act as institutional mediators of of residents' access to the neighbourhood beyond the institution's premises. This cross-sectional study draws on survey data from 423 directors of Portuguese care homes to exam

Associations between food retailer availability and violent crime by neighborhood SES in Chicago, IL: an ecological study.

BACKGROUND: Violent crime continues to be a public health issue in the U.S. Prior research has associated greater availability of certain food retailers (i.e., convenience stores, liquor stores, dollar stores) with higher violent crime rates at the community level. There is limited understanding of how these retailers, and others, are associated with violent crime across the spectrum of neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES). To further explore this topic, this ecological study examined associations between food retailer availability and violent crime rate in Chicago, IL by neighborhood SES.

Relationships Between Extreme Ambient Temperatures, Neighborhood Structural Deprivation, and Fatal Police Violence: A Case-Crossover Analysis.

Police violence is increasingly recognized as a public health crisis, disproportionately affecting Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color due to long-standing patterns of racialized surveillance and disinvestment. Environmental stressors such as heat have also been linked to increased aggression, stress reactivity, and violence, suggesting that as climate change drives more frequent and intense extremes in temperature, these conditions may amplify existing risks of fatal police encounters. This study evaluated whether extreme ambient temperatures were associated with fatal police vi

Neighborhood Environmental Interventions and Opioid Overdose Rates.

IMPORTANCE: Previous research has shown neighborhood environmental interventions can improve health and safety for residents. It is unknown whether these interventions impact opioid overdose outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of neighborhood environmental interventions with opioid overdose rates. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This quasi-experimental nonrandomized trial used a continuous treatment difference-in-differences design and was conducted in a single neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2021. Neighborhood-Level Impact on Opioid Use in the United States: A Scoping Review.

Opioid use presents a pressing public health concern throughout the United States, with growing disparities related to overdose deaths and access to treatment. Neighborhoods, as built and social environments, are an essential domain of the social determinants of health that impact people's well-being. Historical and current policies impact neighborhoods and can contribute to persistent health disparities. Integrating complex factors within the areas where people work, play, learn, and socialize, neighborhoods can contribute to opioid use in various ways. This scoping review describes, synthesi

Do local geographic characteristics moderate the association between familial incarceration and adolescent depression and anxiety?

BACKGROUND: Children who have, or have had, an incarcerated parent/s are at increased risk for mental health issues. However, most research has focused on the impact of incarcerated parents and not accounted for noncustodial family members’ criminal-legal justice system involvement or how neighborhood characteristics such as area deprivation (ADI: income, education, and housing quality), environmental justice (EJI: environmental burden, social and health vulnerability), or urbanicity (RUCA) may affect these relationships. To address these gaps, we investigated the association of familial incar

The Unequal Geography of Recreational Cannabis Retailers in the U.S.

INTRODUCTION: Although more U.S. states continue to legalize the sale of cannabis for recreational adult-use, little is known about the spatial distribution of cannabis retailers in relation to neighborhood characteristics. The objective of this study is to examine the presence or absence of cannabis retailers in census tracts in relation to measures of neighborhood advantage and disadvantage. METHODS: Using 2023 U.S. state agency lists, we identified 5,586 recreational cannabis retailers and geocoded address data in 18 states with recreational cannabis legalization laws. Multilevel logistic

When sport becomes social: how exercise and live spectatorship are linked to happiness through neighborhood connections.

INTRODUCTION: Sport is often understood as a health behavior associated with happiness through physical activity and psychological regulation. However, less is known about the social pathways connecting different forms of sport involvement with happiness. This study examined the associations of structured exercise participation (SEP) and live sports spectatorship (LSS) with happiness and investigated the mediating role of neighborhood social capital (NSC). METHODS: Data were drawn from 5,451 respondents in the 2023 Chinese General Social Survey. OLS regression was used as the main analytical

Association of social and environmental exposures at the neighborhood level with child brain volume.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies show that neighborhood disadvantage negatively impacts children's cognitive function and brain volume. However, despite their co-occurrence, there is a lack of cohesive examination of the joint effects of environmental and social factors on brain volumes. OBJECTIVES: Using environmental mixture methods, we investigated the association between a child's neighborhood environment and brain volume in regions relevant for cognitive and cognitive-affective function. METHODS: We leveraged a sample of 8574 nine and ten-year-old children from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive D

The association of neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics with cardiovascular health: A quasi-experimental study of refugees to Denmark.

Neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage is associated with cardiovascular health, although it is unclear which specific aspects of neighborhoods matter most. We leveraged a natural experiment in which refugees to Denmark were quasi-randomly assigned to neighborhoods across the country during 1986-1998, creating variation in exposure to various aspects of neighborhood disadvantage. The cohort was followed through December 2018. Exposures included neighborhood-level family income, educational attainment, unemployment, and welfare transfers measured in the first neighborhood after arrival to Denm

Understanding Disparities in Receipt of Complex Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgery at a Small Geographic Scale.

OBJECTIVE: To define neighborhood-level disparities in the receipt of complex cancer surgery. BACKGROUND: Little is known about the geographic variation of receipt of surgery among patients with complex gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, especially at a small geographic scale. METHODS: This study included individuals diagnosed with 5 invasive, nonmetastatic, complex GI cancers (esophagus, stomach, pancreas, bile ducts, liver) from the Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System during 2009 and 2018. To preserve patient privacy, we combined US census tracts into the smallest geographic areas that i

Relationships Between Patient Race and Residential Race Context With Missed Human Immunodeficiency Virus Care Visits in the United States, 2010-2015.

BACKGROUND: Racial inequities exist in retention in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care and multilevel analyses are needed to contextualize and address these differences. Leveraging data from a multisite clinical cohort of people with HIV (PWH), we assessed the relationships between patient race and residential characteristics with missed HIV care visits. METHODS: Medical record and patient-reported outcome (PRO; including mental health and substance-use measures) data were drawn from 7 participating Center for AIDS Research Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS) sites including N

Estimating the non-linear effects of urban built environment at residence and workplace on carbon dioxide emissions from commuting.

Understanding the relationship between CO2 emissions from commuting (CEC) and the built environment is crucial for sustainable transportation and land-use policymaking during the process of constructing a low carbon city. Previous studies usually assume that the relationship is linear, which may lead to inaccurate CEC prediction and ineffective policy. Using daily travel survey data of residents in the central city of Jinan, this study adopted a gradient boosting decision tree model to explore the threshold effect and the non-linear relationship between built environments and CEC. Our findings
