Breathing Pattern Disorder: Translating Breathing at Rest to Exercise.

Breathing pattern disorder (BPD) is an abnormal pattern of ventilation and movements of the upper and lower ribcage and abdomen that results in a constellation of symptoms. This paper discusses the management of BPD from a technical standpoint. Since there is not a one-size-fits-all model for practice, we offer a toolbox approach to care with quick reference tables and diagrams that allow the practitioner to easily find treatement approaches that may suite their athlete. While this article uses the athlete as a reference for treatment, there is also a consideration for how to approach the co-m

Is thyrotropin releasing hormone an endogenous ergotropic substance in the brain?

The neuropharmacological profile for thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) has been compared with various other types of central nervous system stimulants, and the results of the comparison, considered together with the results obtained by other workers, suggest that TRH may function as an endogenous ergotropic substance. Its ergotropic properties suggest that TRH analogues with better biological stability than the parent compound may be useful agents for treating some psychiatric disorders; for hastening the recovery of consciousness and respiration after anaesthesia; for treating narcotic over

Correlations of physiological activities in nocturnal Cheyne-Stokes respiration.

We have conducted a power-spectrum-density (PSD) analysis of the distinct sleep stages of a previously diagnosed nocturnal Cheyne-Stokes respiration patient (NCSR) and studied the correlations of different physiological activities. This is the first study where the correlations were analyzed separately for different sleep stages and the influence of arousals was completely eliminated. Mathematical analysis of the polysomnographical records revealed clear indicators of the disorder in the form of large peaks in a very-low frequency range of f ≈ 0.02 Hz. We have shown existence of the significan

[Respiratory insufficiency in acute lung diseases].

The diagnosis of respiratory failure is based on pathological findings in arterial blood gas analysis. Thus, even in emergent cases with acute pulmonary disorders, rapid differentiation of the amount and nature of the respiratory impairment is possible. Furthermore, evaluation of the blood gas analysis may be an essential factor in the choice of therapeutic procedures. Hypoxia should be treated by strictly controlled oxygen administration, to avoid further respiratory depressant effects. Patients with acute and progressive respiratory acidosis usually need artificial ventilation by volume- or

Somatoform respiratory disorders in children and adolescents-proposals for a practical approach to definition and classification.

Somatoform respiratory disorders represent conditions with dysfunctional breathing unexplained by structural abnormalities. This heterogeneous group includes disorders with neural dysregulation of respiration (vocal cord dysfunction) or with dysregulation of the respiratory pattern (hyperventilation, sighing dyspnea), psychogenic disorders such as unjustified anxiety of suffocation, and stereotype conditions such as throat clearing or habit cough. Many symptoms are nonspecific and largely overlap with respiratory disease symptoms of somatic etiology. Most patients will present in a nonspeciali

Impaired Mitochondrial Bioenergetics Function in Pediatric Chronic Overlapping Pain Conditions with Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is often the primary complaint of children with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGDI) and other chronic overlapping pain disorders (COPC). The basis for this symptom remains unknown. We evaluated mitochondrial function in the white blood cells of these patients. METHODS: This prospective Children's Wisconsin IRB approved study recruited subjects aging 10-18 years from pediatric neurogastroenterology clinics and healthy comparison subjects (HC). Environmental and oxidative stressors can damage the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The known low-grade inflammation in C

The AMPK-PGC-1α-SIRT3 axis mediates mitochondrial metabolic dysfunction and neuronal senescence induced by Al(mal)3 exposure in HT22 hippocampal neuronal cells.

Aluminum (Al) is a widely distributed environmental metal whose chronic exposure has been implicated in neurotoxicity and increased risk of neurodegenerative disorders. However, the molecular mechanisms linking aluminum exposure to neuronal metabolic dysfunction and senescence remain incompletely understood. In this study, mouse hippocampal neuronal HT22 cells were exposed to aluminum maltolate [Al (mal)3, 60-240 μM] to investigate alterations in mitochondrial bioenergetics and senescence-associated pathways. Aluminum exposure significantly increased senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β

Specificity of cranial cutaneous manipulations in modulating autonomic nervous system responses and physiological oscillations: A controlled study.

Significant autonomic nervous system responses to a specific osteopathic intervention, the cranial vault hold (CVH), have recently been demonstrated in forehead skin blood volume changes, heart rate, and respiration frequencies. The specificity of the CVH-intervention-related autonomic responses yet requires differentiation. Thus, we compared autonomic responses to CVH with responses to compression of the fourth ventricle (CV4) and to two corresponding SHAM conditions. Analysis of frequencies and amplitudes for changes in skin blood volume and respiration in low (LF; 0.05-0.12 Hz), intermediat

Flexible Self-Powered Respiration Sensor Inspired by Fish Lateral Line Systems.

Respiration is a critical physiological signal, and abnormal respiratory patterns are widely recognized as key indicators of various cardiopulmonary and neurological disorders, making continuous monitoring crucial. However, existing clinical systems are constrained by motion limitations, complexity, and cost, hindering daily use. In this work, we present a bio-inspired, low-cost, flexible, and self-powered respiration sensor (BLFS-RS) inspired by the fish lateral line system, operating via contact electrification and electrostatic induction. It features a semicylindrical structure made of sili

Catalpol Ameliorates Insulin Sensitivity and Mitochondrial Respiration in Skeletal Muscle of Type-2 Diabetic Mice Through Insulin Signaling Pathway and AMPK/SIRT1/PGC-1α/PPAR-γ Activation.

Catalpol was tested for various disorders including diabetes mellitus. Numerous molecular mechanisms have emerged supporting its biological effects but with little information towards its insulin sensitizing effect. In this study, we have investigated its effect on skeletal muscle mitochondrial respiration and insulin signaling pathway. Type-2 diabetes (T2DM) was induced in male C57BL/6 by a high fat diet (60% Kcal) and streptozotocin (50 mg/kg, i.p.). Diabetic mice were orally administered with catalpol (100 and 200 mg/kg), metformin (200 mg/kg), and saline for four weeks. Fasting blood gluco

Molecular changes in hippocampal energy metabolism in mice selectively bred for extremes in stress reactivity: Relevance of mitochondrial dysfunction for affective disorders.

Affective disorders, such as major depression, are frequently associated with metabolic disturbances involving mitochondria. Although dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is known to alter energy metabolism, the precise mechanisms linking stress and metabolic disturbances are not sufficiently understood. We used a mouse model of affective disorders to investigate the impact of a genetic predisposition for extremes in stress reactivity on behavioural and metabolic phenotypes as well as energy metabolism. Adult males of three independent mouse lines selectively bred for

Dietary inorganic nitrate improves mitochondrial efficiency in humans.

Nitrate, an inorganic anion abundant in vegetables, is converted in vivo to bioactive nitrogen oxides including NO. We recently demonstrated that dietary nitrate reduces oxygen cost during physical exercise, but the mechanism remains unknown. In a double-blind crossover trial we studied the effects of a dietary intervention with inorganic nitrate on basal mitochondrial function and whole-body oxygen consumption in healthy volunteers. Skeletal muscle mitochondria harvested after nitrate supplementation displayed an improvement in oxidative phosphorylation efficiency (P/O ratio) and a decrease i

[Autonomic dysfunction of central nervous system disorders].

Central nervous system disorders, such as cerebrovascular or spinal cord lesions often cause dysfunctions of the autonomic nervous system. In most cases of acute cerebrovascular accidents, blood pressure is transiently elevated. Some patients, especially with pontine or thalamic hemorrhage, suffer from extremely high fever. In patients with large lesions in the cerebral hemisphere or lesions in the brainstem, cardiopulmonary state may be affected. In spite of absence of acute myocardial infarction, electrocardiogram may show ST-T changes resembling acute myocardial infarction. Cheyne-Stokes re

Flunarizine and verapamil: effects on central nervous system and peripheral consequences of cytotoxic hypoxia in rats.

Flunarizine is a calcium entry blocking drug possessing antihypoxic activity in animal models of cerebral and peripheral ischemia-anoxia and has clinical usefulness in circulatory disorders of both central and peripheral origin. This report compares the activity of flunarizine and verapamil, another calcium entry blocking drug, on the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral consequences of cytotoxic hypoxia induced by high and low doses of KCN. The lethal effect of KCN (6 mg/kg, i.p.) in rats was prevented by orally administered flunarizine (ED50 = 12 mg/kg with four-hr pretreatment) but n

Ondine's curse: therapeutic trial of dimefline.

Ondine's curse is a rare disorder characterized by primary failure of central regulation of breathing, resulting in severe hypoventilation during sleep. This report describes a 14-year-old girl with both this disorder and hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. As a therapeutic trial, dimefline was administered orally, which was effective in deepening respiration for certain periods of sleep, during which time blood gas levels improved significantly.

Abnormal respiration and sudden death during sleep in multiple system atrophy with autonomic failure.

We studied respiration during sleep in 7 patients with multiple system atrophy and autonomic failure (MSA-AF) and 7 control subjects. Although mean respiratory rate, tidal volume, and inspiratory flow rate were statistically similar in both groups, the coefficients of variability in all were significantly greater in MSA-AF patients. Four of 5 nontracheostomized had evidence of upper airway obstruction without significant oxygen desaturation. Three of these 5 patients died suddenly during sleep. MSA-AF is associated with upper airway dysfunction and disordered central respirations which can be

Respiratory and cognitive mediators of treatment change in panic disorder: evidence for intervention specificity.

OBJECTIVE: There are numerous theories of panic disorder, each proposing a unique pathway of change leading to treatment success. However, little is known about whether improvements in proposed mediators are indeed associated with treatment outcomes and whether these mediators are specific to particular treatment modalities. Our purpose in this study was to analyze pathways of change in theoretically distinct interventions using longitudinal, moderated mediation analyses. METHOD: Forty-one patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia were randomly assigned to receive 4 weeks of training aimed

Heightened sensitivity to adverse effects of metformin in mtDNA mutant patient cells.

AIMS: Metformin (Met) is a widely used, cost-effective, and relatively safe drug, primarily prescribed for diabetes, that also exhibits beneficial effects in other conditions, such as in cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, and cancer. Despite its common use, the safety of Met in patients with primary mitochondrial disease remains uncertain, as both Met and mitochondrial dysfunction increase the risk of lactic acidosis. Here we have examined the effects of Met in patient cells with m.3243A>G mitochondrial DNA mutation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We utilized induced pluripotent stem ce
