BACKGROUND: The positive effects of Kangaroo mother care in NICU's are well documented but, to a lesser extent, explored during inter-hospital neonatal transport. Inter-hospital transport, with the infant placed in a transport incubator, increases the risk of separation while infants in Kangaroo mother care position implies that the parents accompany the transport. There exists limited knowledge if physiological stability differs when transported in Kangaroo mother care position compared to transport in a transport incubator.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to compare physiological stability

BACKGROUND: Individuals with bronchiectasis exhibit colonization and infection of the respiratory system, with a consequent alteration of the macroscopic appearance of secretions, which ranges from mucoid to purulent. Purulence is related to the structural conformation, rheological profile, and transport indexes of mucus. We analyzed and compared the transport properties of respiratory secretions with mucoid appearance versus those with purulent appearance in patients with bronchiectasis and in subjects without lung disease.
METHODS: In a simulated cough machine we assessed the mucociliary tr

AIM: The purpose of this study was to compare neonatal outcome (mortality, respiratory distress syndrome, intraventricular hemorrhage, necrotising enterocolitis, persisting ductus arteriosus, and septicaemia) after intrauterine transport versus neonatal transport in an area where short-distance transport is the rule.
METHODS: The study was retrospective in nature. The files of all neonates delivered between 24 and 34 weeks from 1994 to 1998 and transported intrauterine or postnatally to the Antwerp University Hospital were reviewed. Cases of intrauterine fetal death and mothers discharged bef

BACKGROUND: Laboratory and clinical studies demonstrated a salutary effect of estradiol (E2) on pneumonia and other infectious complications after trauma, while dihydrotestosterone (DHT) failed to show a similar effect. Secretory immunoglobulin A is the principle antibody in the respiratory and other mucosal secretions. Immunoglobulin A (IgA) production and transport into the mucosal secretion is regulated by Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4). In addition, E2 may influence immune regulatory cells via TLR-4. We hypothesized that the protective effect of E2 on the development of pneumonia may be rela

We sought to determine the effect of neonatal transport on the incidence of adverse events of transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) in term neonates. A retrospective study was performed of neonates who had TTN and were admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Sami Ulus Maternity, Children's Education and Research Hospital by land-based transport. Data from 208 newborns with TTN were evaluated, and clinical and laboratory findings were compared between patients who were transported from within the city (group 1) or from outside of the city (group 2). In the present study, long-dist

Deciphering the dynamics of water transport across bronchial epithelial cell monolayers is pivotal for unraveling respiratory physiology and pathology. In this study, we employ an advanced microfluidic system to explore bidirectional water transport across 16HBE14σ bronchial epithelial cells. Previous experiments unveiled electroneutral multiple ion transport, with chloride ions utilizing transcellular pathways and sodium ions navigating both paracellular and transcellular routes. Unexpectedly, under isoosmotic conditions, rapid bidirectional movement of Na+ and Cl- was observed, leading to th

BACKGROUND: Reports regarding transportation methods of severely critical patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) or paediatric ICU (PICU) are limited. In an attempt to address this research gap, this study aimed to test the hypothesis that prognosis is worse in patients transported by family members.
METHODS: This multicentre study collected data from the Japanese Registry of Paediatric Acute Care database. Data concerning patients aged ≤16 years admitted to a participating hospital ICU or PICU and their transportation method to the hospital were extracted and divided into two grou

In order to study the effect of carbocisteine on the mucociliary function of the respiratory tract, we performed a double-blind study on rats with SO2-induced (400 ppm) hypersecretion. During the experimental bronchitis, the treated group of rats received carbocisteine through a stomach tube at a dose level of 500 mg/kg for 15 days, whereas the untreated group of rats received distilled water. After killing the rats, and following lung excision, the respiratory mucus was scraped off and collected by using a glass capillary. The mucus degree of purulence was macroscopically estimated and the mu

OBJECTIVES: Prone positioning improves oxygenation and survival in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Transport of intubated patients in the prone position is considered high risk, particularly during air medical transport, where patient access is limited. Evidence on prolonged helicopter transport in the prone position remains limited. We aimed to describe helicopter transport of intubated patients with severe ARDS in the prone position in North Norway.
METHODS: We conducted an observational, retrospective case series of six consecutive adult patients with sever

Lung ultrasound (LUS) has emerged as an essential tool in neonatology over the past two decades, offering unique advantages for this patient population. The small size, high water content, and delayed rib calcification of neonates make them particularly suited for ultrasonographic imaging. By replacing traditional chest radiographs, it significantly reduces exposure to ionizing radiation. Furthermore, it is widely accessible, easy to use, and provides repeatable, real-time imaging without requiring patient transport. These features make it invaluable in managing acute respiratory conditions, w

Despite extensive efforts in studying radioactive aerosols, including the transmission of radionuclides in different chemical matrices throughout the body, the internal organ-specific radiation dose due to inhaled radioactive aerosols has largely relied on experimental deposition data and simplified human phantoms. Computational fluid-particle dynamics (CFPD) has proven to be a reliable tool in characterizing aerosol transport in the upper airways, while Monte Carlo based radiation codes allow accurate simulation of radiation transport. The objective of this study is to numerically assess the
