Provider perceptions of challenges and facilitators to surgical care in unhoused patients: A qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Unhoused patients have worse surgical outcomes than the general population. However, the drivers of this inequity have not been studied. METHODS: We conducted 26 semi-structured interviews of clinicians who care for patients with surgical disease, using a purposive sampling strategy to intentionally recruit participants with significant experience caring for unhoused patients across different roles. We used thematic analysis to analyze the resulting data. RESULTS: We conducted 26 interviews: 11 with surgeons (42%), 8 with internal medicine physicians (30%), 2 with surgical advanc

Sense of support within the family: a cross-sectional study of family members in palliative home care.

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence that family members' support to each other can be of importance to its members, there are limited studies of factors related to family members' sense of such support during palliative care. AIM: Based on the family systems approach, we evaluated which factors were associated with family members' sense of support within their closest family in a palliative home care context and developed a model that predicts such sense of support. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design was used. We interviewed 209 adult family members (69% of eligible) of adult patients with expected s

"It's easy being together": Creating a shared space of belonging within a day program.

It is common for a dementia diagnosis to result in a diminution of social relationships and reduced opportunities for social engagement, putting individuals living with dementia at an increased risk of loneliness. Adult day programs provide a space for individuals with dementia to socialize with people who have a shared diagnosis. Previous research on day programs has primarily focused on their potential to reduce participants' responsive behaviours and improve their functional abilities while providing respite for care partners. The potential of day programs to alleviate loneliness by contrib

Families' experiences of caring at home for a technology-dependent child: a review of the literature.

Recent medical advances have led to the emergence of a group of chronically ill children who are dependent upon technology for their survival. Many of these children are cared for at home by their parents. This paper presents an overview of the literature that has examined the experiences of families caring for a technology-dependent child at home. The social, emotional and financial impact on families and their perspectives on the services supporting them at home is described. The paper concludes by identifying areas where further research is needed.

Mothers experiencing homelessness: mental health, support and social care needs.

Little is known about the experiences of mothers who become homeless. The numbers of women with children in this situation are growing, most becoming homeless following domestic or neighbour abuse, or the breakdown of family relationships. This qualitative study aimed to describe mothers' experiences of homelessness in relation to their mental health, support and social care needs. Twenty-eight homeless women with dependent children residing in hostels were interviewed. The experience of homelessness was stressful, but viewed as a respite for many of the participants because they had experienc

Measuring exertion during caregiving of children and young adults with cerebral palsy who require assistance for mobility and self-care.

Our purpose was to compare objective and subjective measures of energy exertion during caregiving tasks. Participants were primary caregivers (N = 19) of children and young adults (aged 3 -22 years) with cerebral palsy (CP) who require assistance for mobility and self-care (67% classified in level V on the Gross Motor Function Classification System). Measures of exertion were collected during two caregiving tasks: (1) transfers and (2) dressing. Objective measures included volume of oxygen (V02), heart rate (HR), and the subjective measure was a rating of perceived exertion (Borg RPE). Control

Which patients with terminal cancer are admitted from home care?

The factors related to admission of patients with terminal cancer who had been referred to a reputable home care service were examined in 415 patients referred in a two-year period and in a prospective study of a randomized one in three sample of the 232 adults still alive one week after referral, who were able to converse and be at home with caring relatives. The reasons given by staff for intermediate admissions were mostly to improve symptom control or provide respite; for final admissions the reasons were symptom control, patients' deteriorated state and relatives needing relief. Experiences of family caregivers of the older people with limitations in activities: A qualitative study.

Functional disabilities increase with ageing and limitations in daily living activities (ADLs) occurred as a consequence. Older people living at home may therefore become dependent on family members in managing activities in daily living. As the informal caregivers' role is known to be challenging, their experiences need to be explored to strengthen their new roles as family caregivers. This study aimed at exploring family caregivers' experiences of providing care for older people living at home with limited ADLs in Sri Lanka. Caregivers caring for older people with limitations in activities a
