PURPOSE: We evaluated the efficacy of a 3-dimensional (D) navigator for retroperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 21 patients with malignant localized renal (16) or ureteral (5) neoplasms underwent multi-detector row computerized tomography. The 3-D navigator was created using volume rendering technique. These findings were compared with videos obtained during laparoscopy.

INTRODUCTION: Retroperitoneal neoplasms are rare and easily misdiagnosed. These tumors are often discovered incidentally during imaging studies performed for other reasons. Paragangliomas are tumors that arise from extra-adrenal medullary neural crest derivatives. They are usually located in the head and neck but can be found in various body sites, including the chest cavity, abdomen, pelvis and bladder. We report the case of a patient who had a retroperitoneal paraganglioma manifested as paralytic ileus, which is an unusual presentation of a paraganglioma.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal sarcomas are rare neoplasms that often present with multivisceral involvement. Treatment for these tumors requires careful decision making requiring a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

The article presents an algorithm of diagnostics and treatment of renal cysts and other liquid neoplasms of the retroperitoneal space on an analysis of 270 case histories. The algorithm takes into account the achievements of modern medical technologies developed in the recent years. Magnetic resonance imaging techniques have made it possible to delineate a variety of pathologic processes in the retroperitoneum, including lymphadenopathy, atherosclerotic and aneurysmal disease of the aorta, congenital venous anomalies, and primary and secondary retroperitoneal neoplasms. The availability of multiplanar image display, the excellent soft tissue contrast resolution, and the fact that exogenous contrast materials are not needed are valuable assets of this imaging modality.

Since 1965, 103 patients with testicular neoplasms have been evaluated with lymphangiography for evidence of retroperitoneal disease. Thirty-five patients with testicular carcinomas had lymphadenectomies; corroboration of their initial lymphangiographic interpretaions with the surgical specimens was possible. There was an overall 79% (26 of 33) correlation. We feel that even with relatively inexperienced examiners, lymphangiography can be a useful means of evaluating the retroperitoneum.

A poorly differentiated primary retroperitoneal angiosarcoma with abundant intracytoplasmic and extracytoplasmic eosinophilic globules containing alpha 1-antitrypsin and alpha 1-antichymotrypsin is presented. Recognition of these globules may facilitate future diagnoses of the neoplasm in this or other locations. Granuloma inguinale has been reported to mimic squamous cell carcinoma, as well as sexually transmitted diseases.
