PURPOSE: To describe the clinical features and laboratory findings of patients with fascioliasis in southwestern France.

We retrospectively reviewed 34 consecutive patients with serologically confirmed leptospirosis admitted during years 1992-2002. Nine patients (26.5%) had respiratory symptoms on admission including cough (n = 4), shortness of breath (n = 4), cyanosis (n = 2), and hemoptysis (n = 1). OBJECTIVE: To study clinical features, visual prognosis and response to immunosuppressive drugs in patients with ocular Behçet Disease (BD).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: clinical data of 17 patients (33 eyes) were retrospectively reviewed from May 1996 to May 2003.
RESULTS: The male/female ratio was 12/5. The commonest manifestations were oral ulceration (100%) and skin lesions (88%). Anterior uveitis was present in 59%, posterior uveitis was in 76% and panuveitis was in 88.1%. Visual acuity improved in 11 (33.3%) eyes, remind stable in 18 (54.5%) eyes and four (12.1%) eyes lost two or more lines.

A retrospective study of 30 cases of mesiodens is presented. male preponderance of 1.5:1. was 64% mesiodens were impacted and 36% erupted. Inverted impacted mesiodens was seen in 62.5% of the impacted mesiodens. 66.6% cases had 2 mesiodens per case. The harmful effects on the dentition were mostly crowding, rotation, diastema and impacted permanent incisor.

A retrospective study on 107 men with hematospermia between 1986 and 1993 is reported. The age of the patients ranged from 16 to 73 years (mean 45.6 years). Sixty five patients (60.7%) were asymptomatic except for hematospermia. Hematospermia disappeared within one month in 43% of all the patients, and in 61% of those under 40 years of age. Many etiologies of tarsal tunnel syndrome exist, but it is difficult to determine the specific etiology for a patient. Surgical success rates vary in the literature from 44% to 100%. The aim of this study was to determine the rehabilitation outcome of lower limb amputee patients after clinical rehabilitation. Altogether 183 amputee patients admitted for clinical rehabilitation in the years 1987-1991 were reviewed by retrospective analysis of medical record data. Sixty-eight proved cases of typhoid and paratyphoid fever were reviewed in a retrospective study covering 5 years (1986-1990). Monoamniotic twins are uncommon but are at high risk (reportedly 50%) for perinatal death, commonly from cord accidents. Until recently the diagnosis of monoamniotic twinning was seldom made before delivery, but modern ultrasound technology permits diagnosis during prenatal care, creating a management dilemma. This is a report of the experience with monoamniotic twins of 20 or more weeks' gestation at the University of Iowa Hospitals from 1961-1989. Twenty monoamniotic twin pregnancies were compared with 40 monochorionic, diamniotic controls regarding antepartum and intrapartum complications.

Tendoachilles tenodesis to the fibula was performed in postpolio patients to improve their gait. The charts of 48 patients with 52 tenodeses were reviewed. The mean follow-up was 5.5 years. Gait improved in one-third. When the hindfoot was stabilized, gait improved in 40% of the patients, but when it was not stabilized, only 22% improved their gait. Records of 17 patients who had two or more attacks of pyogenic meningitis were collected from eight centres in the United Kingdom for retrospective analysis. Thirteen patients had intracranial abnormality; of seven with head injury five produced cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea. The first of the 28 attacks seen in these occurred between a few weeks and 12 years of the head injury. Pneumococci were identified in 25 episodes in cerebrospinal fluid. Of six patients without a history of head injury, one had 'spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea' and five had pathological changes of the ear.

This is a retrospective study of 102 patients with whiplash injuries of the neck followed up at approximately 2 years. The results show that 67 patients were asymptomatic by this time and the remaining 35 patients still exhibited symptoms. Prognostic indicators were found to be age, occipital headaches, referred symptoms, interscapular pain, abnormal neurological signs, positive radiological findings and osteoarthritic changes of the cervical spine. Symptoms that persisted for more than 2 months indicated prolonged disability.

The data of 24 patients, operated for different types of hyperparathyroidism were reviewed in order to evaluate the evolution of calcium levels during the first week following surgery. A correlation with the preoperative values of alkaline phosphatase could be demonstrated. It may be concluded that in the primary affected patients a stay in the ICU, only for hypocalcemia-related problems, is not required. In secondary hyperparathyroidism however, the more spectacular drops of calcium levels and the risk of other vital complications, justify a follow-up in the ICU for at least 48 hours.
