Predicting Return to Work Following Myocardial Infarction: A Prospective Longitudinal Cohort Study.

This study aimed to determine the proportion of patients who returned to work within three months post-myocardial infarction and the factors that predicted return to work. A total of 136 participants with myocardial infarction completed the study questionnaires at baseline and three months post-discharge between August 2015 and February 2016. At the three-month follow-up, 87.5% (n = 49) of the participants who were working pre-infarction had resumed work. Age, gender, education, smoking, readmission after discharge, number of comorbidities, diabetes, social support, anxiety, and depression wer

Persistence of symptoms and return to work after hospitalization for COVID-19.

Many patients hospitalized with COVID-19 were unable to return to work or their return was delayed due to their health condition. The aim of this observational study was to evaluate the impact of moderate-to-severe and critical COVID-19 infection on persistence of symptoms and return to work after hospital discharge. In this study, two thirds of hospitalized patients with pulmonary involvement reported persistence of symptoms six months after COVID-19 infection, such as memory loss (45.5%), myalgia (43.9%), fatigue (39.4%), and dyspnea (25.8%), and 50% slowly returned to work, with repercussio

The influence of breast cancer related lymphedema on women's return-to-work.

BACKGROUND: Lymphedema is one of the major treatment complications following breast cancer surgery and radiation. As the majority of women who develop breast cancer are at the age of employment, occupational functioning and employment are issues of concern. This study is novel in exploring the ways that lymphedema affects their work experience. METHODS: A multiple-case study methodology drawn from Yin's definition was employed. A total of 13 female survivors who developed breast cancer-related lymphedema participated by completing a survey and a 60-min semi-structured interview. RESULTS: Fou

Prevalence and predictors of return to work among stroke survivors in Jordan.

BACKGROUND: Returning to work (RTW) is an essential goal for many stroke survivors. Currently, the prevalence of RTW post stroke in developing countries such as Jordan is unknown. Additionally, more research is required to identify factors that contribute to RTW post stroke. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to (1) determine the prevalence of RTW among stroke survivors in Jordan, and (2) determine the predictors of RTW from a holistic perspective using the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF) 3rd edition. METHODS: Recruitment was carried out from different Jordanian hospitals and rehabil

Return to work after carpal tunnel release surgery: a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common nerve compression disorder which affects hand sensation and function. Carpal tunnel release surgery (CTR) is frequently performed to alleviate these symptoms. For many CTR patients, surgery occurs during their working lifetime, but there is currently no evidence-based guidance to inform clinicians or patients when it might be safe to return to different types of work afterwards. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the return to work experiences of patients who had recently undergone CTR. METHODS: Semi-structured 1:1 interviews were c

The association between stroke location and return to work after first stroke.

Although various factors, including age, race, job category, disability, and cortical function, have been associated with return to work (RTW) after stroke, few studies have examined the influence of stroke location on RTW. We conducted a retrospective cohort study on the association between stroke location and RTW after first stroke. The patients were all younger than age 65 years and were working at the time of their stroke (n = 126). A follow-up questionnaire evaluated RTW. Data were analyzed using the Cox proportional hazards model for hazard ratios (HRs) of successful RTW, taking potentia

Return to work experience of injured workers in a case management program.

A major goal of case management programs is the worker's timely return to work. Few studies have examined return to work from the perspective of the injured worker. This article describes the findings from the case management evaluation that describe the return to work experience of workers who sustained catastrophic injuries, or who had secondary conditions or complications following the injury occurrence. Among the factors determined to affect the return to work experience were structural factors (i.e., psychosocial variables including job satisfaction and relationship with employer and cowo

Factors affecting first return to work following a compensable occupational back injury.

Occupational back injuries produced $27 billion in direct and indirect costs in 1988. Predictors of prolonged disability have generally been identified in selected clinical populations, but there have been few population-based studies using statewide registries from workers' compensation systems. This study uses a 1986 cohort of 8,628 Michigan workers with compensable back injuries followed to March 1, 1990. Cox proportional hazards analyses with nine categorical covariates identified factors predicting missed worktime for the first disability episode following the injury. The model distinguis

Predicting return to work for lower back pain patients receiving worker's compensation.

The results of a prospective study of 134 patients with lower back pain suggest that nonorganic factors are better predictors of return to work than organic findings. Patients who returned to work had fewer job, personal, or family related problems. There were no significant differences between patients who returned to work and those who did not when comparing myelograms, computed tomographic scans, or roentgenographs. The only significant difference in physical organic findings was for muscle atrophy. Patients who did not return to work had a statistically higher incidence rate of muscle atro

Lumbosacral fracture-dislocation: a case managed conservatively, with return to heavy work.

A 41-year-old agricultural sustained a lumbosacral fracture-dislocation when a tree fell across his back. The initial anterior displacement of half the depth of the body of L5 progressed to three-quarters of the body over a 2-year period. Neurological deficit was minimal and the management was conservative. Spontaneous arrest of the displacement occurred by anterior sacral buttressing and the patient has returned to his previous heavy work.

Return to work after sepsis-a German population-based health claims study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term impairments after sepsis can impede the return to work in survivors. We aimed to describe rates of return to work 6 and 12 months postsepsis. METHODS: This retrospective, population-based cohort study was based on health claims data of the German AOK health insurance of 23.0 million beneficiaries. We included 12-months survivors after hospital-treated sepsis in 2013/2014, who were ≤60 years at the time of the admission and were working in the year presepsis. We assessed the prevalence of return to work (RTW), persistent inability to work and early retirement. RESULTS: A

Return to work in head and neck cancer survivors: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Cancer survivors face higher rates of unemployment compared with individuals without a history of cancer. Compared to other cancer types, head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors face unique disease and treatment-specific issues that may limit return to work (RTW). This review aimed to determine employment outcomes of HNC survivors post-treatment and identify factors associated with RTW. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, CINAHL and PsycINFO in December 2021. Inclusion criteria included adults (≥ 18 years); completed treatment for HNC; data available on RTW post-treat
