Botryoid-type of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the proximal and mid ureter in an adult woman.

We report a unique case of botryoid-type embryonal RMS of the proximal and mid ureter in a pregnant 29-year-old woman. The ureteral polyp consisted of a malignant small blue round cell tumor with a myxoid background and contained evidence of foci of immature cartilage and aggregates of epithelial cells reminiscent of hair follicle. Immunohistochemical stains for myogenin and desmin confirmed skeletal muscle, or rhabdomyoblastic, differentiation. The compact epithelial cell fragments reminiscent of hair follicle differentiation were positive for p40. Treatment included 6 cycles of adjuvant chem

Gross perianal embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma with severe multiple bone metastases throughout the body: a case report.

In adults, embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) is rare and has a poor prognosis. Giant perianal ERMS with severe multiple bone metastases at initial diagnosis has not been reported and lacks effective treatment options. This current case report describes a 31-year-old female patient that presented with a large lump on the right side of the anus. ERMS was diagnosed, accompanied by multiple bone metastases throughout the body and severe thrombocytopenia. She had an extremely low platelet count at initial diagnosis, making systemic chemotherapy inappropriate. Genetic testing did not help identify e

Laparoscopic Radical Trachelectomy for Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Cervix in a 2-Year-Old Girl.

BACKGROUND: Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the cervix is a rare and aggressive malignancy that usually affects children and young adults. CASE: We describe a 2-year-old patient who presented with a mass protruding through the vaginal introitus. Preoperative investigations including vaginoscopy, hysteroscopy, magnetic resonance imaging, and biopsies confirmed embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, botryoid subtype, arising from the cervix. She was successfully treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and interval laparoscopic radical trachelectomy to achieve remission. CONCLUSION: Collaboration between the

Cervical embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor with congenital absence of unilateral ovary.

We report this first case of synchronous cervical rhabdomyosarcoma and Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor (SLCT) of ovary with congenital absence of unilateral ovary and fallopian tube in a 16-year-old female patient. A review of the English-language literature identified only six cases of double malignancies with cervical rhabdomyosarcoma and SLCT but none of the case was associated with congenital absence of ovary and fallopian tube. When such multiple conditions involving one system occur in an individual, the possibility of single etiology arises, but beside some hypothesis, no definite link could

Clonal karyotypic evolution in an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma with trisomy 8 as the primary chromosomal abnormality.

An embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma was analyzed cytogenetically. In primary cultures fed a serum-containing medium, 11 clones with karyotypic abnormalities were found. One had trisomy 8 only. The other 10 clones had trisomy 8 as well as additional evolutionary changes that included trisomy for part or all of chromosome 2, isochromosomes for the short and long arms of chromosome 11, isochromosomes for the long arm of chromosome 8, and extra copies of chromosome 8, some of which had an interstitial deletion in 8q. In those primary cultures that had grown in a chemically defined, serum-free medium and

Composite uterine neoplasm with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and primitive neuroectodermal tumor components: rhabdomyosarcoma with divergent differentiation, variant of primitive neuroectodermal tumor, or unique entity?

Three cases of composite uterine neoplasms comprised of primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) and rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) have previously been described, including only one wherein the rhabdomyosarcomatous component was of the embryonal subtype. Whether such composite neoplasms are a variant of RMS, a variant of PNET, or a unique entity is unknown. We report the clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular cytogenetic findings in a case of uterine embryonal RMS with coexisting PNET that was diagnosed in a 25-year-old female. The tumor broadly involved the cervix and corpus uteri and r

Bone Marrow Metastasis of Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma in an Adult, Confounding as Acute Leukemia: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a primitive mesenchymal malignancy of childhood and is very rare in adults. In the presence of a soft tissue mass, bone marrow metastasis of RMS is easy to diagnose. However, RMS can rarely present with extensive marrow replacement, without an obvious primary-a situation that is very challenging for the pathologist as well as the clinician. Owing to the classical round cell morphology, metastatic RMS is morphologically indistinguishable from acute leukemia, especially when the cells are singly scattered, rather than in clusters. We report a rare presentation of bone m

[DICER1-syndrome with manifestation of genital embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in the first year of life: case report].

DICER1 syndrome is a rare monogenic disease with autosomal dominant inheritance. DICER1 protein is involved in the regulation of gene expression by microRNAs. Changes in the expression of DICER1 can be associated with various cancers. A 13,8-year-old girl with a history of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) of uterine cervix and vagina excised at 6 months of age is presented with a thyroid follicular nodular disease (TFND). Molecular genetic examination revealed a heterozygous pathogenic variant p.Arg1003Ter in the DICER1 gene (NM_030621.4). The presented case emphasizes the importance of molec

Adult embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in the nasal cavity; a case report with a review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a primitive malignant soft tissue tumor arising from premature mesenchymal cells. The current study presents a rare case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in the nasal cavity of an adult patient. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old female presented with right nasal obstruction for five months. Examination showed a pale soft, painless mass in the right nasal cavity with attachment to the nasal septum at the osteocartilaginous junction. The patient was falsely suspected for bacterial infection, but later histological examination showed undifferentiated small ro

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the biliary tree in a paediatric patient - A rare cause of obstructive jaundice.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft-tissue sarcoma in the paediatric age group, ranking fourth in frequency after central nervous system tumours, neuroblastomas and nephroblastomas. Embryonal RMS of the biliary tree is considered a rare entity, with the most common clinical presentation being that of obstructive jaundice. We present the case of a 4-year-old boy who presented with hepatomegaly and obstructive jaundice. Biochemically, there was evidence of elevated ductal enzymes with conjugated hyperbilirubinaemia. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features were consistent with a

Ectomesenchymoma with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and ganglioneuroma, arising in association with benign triton tumor of the tongue.

Soft-tissue tumors known as "triton" tumors are rare lesions containing neural tissue and skeletal muscle at varying levels of maturity and malignant potential. Benign triton tumors, also called "neuromuscular choristomas" or "neuromuscular hamartomas," consist of neural tissue containing mature skeletal muscle in intimate relationship with peripheral nerve. These tumors are rare in the head and neck in children. Ectomesenchymomas are similar tumors consisting of a malignant mesenchymal component, usually embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, and a neuroectodermal component represented by mature ganglio

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterine cervix in a 41-year-old woman: a deceptively benign entity.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the cervix in women older than 40 years of age is extremely rare. Embryonal RMS can appear deceptively benign both clinically and histopathologically. Diagnosis is made on the basis of histomorphologic and immunohistochemical findings. A high index of suspicion is, however, needed to make the diagnosis, as they can masquerade as benign polyps. A 41-year-old female with cervical RMS is described here. The initial biopsy diagnosis of embryonal RMS was confirmed on subsequent hysterectomy. The present case report is described with emphasis on histopathologic features and

Laryngeal embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in an adult - a case presentation in the eyes of geneticists and clinicians.

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma is a solid tumor, resulting from dysregulation of the skeletal myogenesis program. For rhabdomyosarcomas (RMS) with a predilection for the head and neck, genitourinary tract, extremities, trunk, retroperitoneum, the larynx is still an unusual site. Till now only several cases of this laryngeal tumor have been described in world literature in the adult population. The entire spectrum of genetic factors underlying RMS development and progression is unclear until today. Multiple signaling pathways seem to be involved in ERMS development and progression. Uniparental disomy at chromosome 11p15.5 followed by HRAS mutations in embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma: lessons from Costello syndrome.

Costello syndrome (CS; MIM 218040) is characterized by short stature, facial dysmorphism, cardiac defects and predisposition to embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (CS/ERMS) and other neoplasias. CS is caused by germline mutations in the HRAS gene on chromosome 11p15.5, a region showing allelic imbalances in sporadic ERMS and CS/ERMS. The critical gene for ERMS development in this region is unknown. The association of CS and ERMS as well as previous reports illustrating that somatic HRAS mutations are found in a proportion of these tumors prompted us to clarify the significance and a possible correlati

A case of embryonal sarcoma (rhabdomyosarcoma) of the prostate treated with combined surgical and cytostatic therapy.

The case history of a 22-months old boy with a malignant embryonal tumor of the prostate is given. Five years after initiation and three years after termination of a combined therapy with cytostatic drugs (actinomycin D, vincristine sulfate and cyclophosphamide) and surgery he is in good health without any signs of recurrence or metastatic disease. On this moment it is still impossible to be certain whether this therapy is the key for treatment of these tumors, but the successes published and the result till now in this case can be an indication that we are going in the right direction. Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Abdominal Wall in a Pregnant Woman: Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Pathology Findings.

Cancer in pregnancy has an incidence of approximately 1:1000, and cases of sarcoma in pregnancy are rare, with only a few described in the literature. This case report describes a 32-year-old pregnant woman who noticed an approximately 3.0 cm nodule on her left flank in the second trimester of pregnancy. Initially, it was diagnosed as a lipoma. The lesion grew progressively and after 5 months, at 25 weeks' gestation, the lesion became painful, bulky, with areas of necrosis and infection, and emitted a foul odor. Magnetic resonance imaging described the lesion as a heterogeneous mass measuring

Sinonasal DICER1‑mutated embryonal-like (botryoid-like) rhabdomyosarcoma in an adult: report of the first case.

The DICER1 gene, essential for microRNA biogenesis and posttranscriptional gene regulation, has been implicated in a variety of benign and malignant neoplasms, particularly within the context of the DICER1-related tumor predisposition syndrome. While DICER1-associated rhabdomyosarcomas (RMS) are predominantly documented in the genitourinary tract, we present the first case of a DICER1-mutated embryonal-like (botryoid-like) RMS of the nasal fossa. A 63-year-old woman without relevant family history presented with nasal obstruction, headaches, and epistaxis and underwent resection of a polypoid
