Impact of different fracture types in the pyriform buttress area on nasal airway function.

INTRODUCTION: Fractures in the pyriform buttress area adversely affect facial appearance and nasal airway patency. Nasal airway function has received less attention than aesthetic problems in the literature. This retrospective study classified the different fracture types in this area and determined their impact on nasal airway function. MATHODS: Three-dimensional computed tomography images of patients with fractures in the pyriform buttress area were analyzed to identify the exact fracture pattern. The nasal airway functions were evaluated and compared between patients with different fractur

Systematic Review of Surgical Interventions for Inferior Turbinate Hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: Various surgical interventions exist for treatment of inferior turbinate hypertrophy (ITH). Though mucosal-sparing techniques are generally preferred, there is lack of consensus on the optimal technique. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review sought to evaluate the evidence for treatment of bilateral nasal obstruction via inferior turbinate reduction (ITR) and provide a meta-analysis of expected results of various techniques. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library databases were queried to include articles describing surgical treatment for ITH. Exclusion criteria were concurrent na

Position paper on nasal obstruction: evaluation and treatment.

Nasal obstruction (NO) is defined as the subjective perception of discomfort or difficulty in the passage of air through the nostrils. It is a common reason for consultation in primary and specialized care and may affect up to 30%-40% of the population. It affects quality of life (especially sleep) and lowers work efficiency. The aim of this document is to agree on how to treat NO, establish a methodology for evaluating and diagnosing it, and define an individualized approach to its treatment. NO can be unilateral or bilateral, intermittent or persistent and may be caused by local or systemic

[Examination of the nose and sinuses].

The nasosinusal diseases are dominated by the rhinosinusitis. Within this framework, the data drawn from the clinical history and the endoscopy are essential. The imaging is here of secondary importance. It is especially useful to assess the extension of the affection and the surgical difficulties which can be encountered in the treatment of the inflammatory or infectious chronic diseases. On the other hand in the event of tumour it can be helpful to determine the etiologic diagnosis and the extension of the disease. The importance of some subjective symptoms as the nasal obstruction will be s

Overview of Nasal Airway and Nasal Breathing Evaluation.

Several methods are available for evaluating nasal breathing and nasal airflow, as this evaluation may be made from several different perspectives.Physiologic methods for nasal airway evaluation directly measure nasal airflow or nasal airway resistance, while anatomical methods measure nasal airway dimensions. Subjective methods evaluate nasal breathing through several validated patient-reported scales assessing nasal breathing. Computational fluid dynamics evaluates nasal airflow through the analysis of several physics' variables of the nasal airway.Being familiar to these methods is of utmos

Assessing the ability of children and parents to rate their nasal patency. A cross sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Nasal obstruction is a common complaint in pediatric otolaryngology. There are several concerns about how nasal obstruction should be measured. This debate is even more important in children, as they can experience difficulties in being sensitive to their symptoms or even expressing them. In this research we aim to explore the ability of children (and their parents) to assess their nasal obstruction. PARTICIPANTS: AND METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study was performed. Four cohorts of children were consecutively selected from a third level referral Hospital. Cohort A (ch

Nasal Peak Inspiratory Flow in Healthy and Obstructed Patients: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Nasal peak inspiratory flow (NPIF) is a practical and affordable tool that measures maximum inspiratory flow rate through both nostrils. Although NPIF values for healthy controls and patients appear to differ considerably, a generally expected value for populations with and without nasal obstruction has yet to be established. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the mean NPIF value in populations with and without nasal obstruction. METHODS: Medline (1946-) and Embase (1947-) were searched until July 1, 2017. A search strategy was used to identify st

Long-term efficacy of our surgical approach to turbinate hypertrophy.

In our department, chronically enlarged inferior turbinates (not responding to adequate medical therapy) are treated with the CO2-laser or by partial inferior turbinoplasty. In this work, the latter technique is described and the short- and long-term results (up to 9 years of follow-up) are evaluated. Relief of nasal obstruction was reported by 93.5% of the patients. There was a good correlation between this success rate and the objective measurements of the nasal resistance by active anterior rhinomanometry. Rhinorrhea or postnasal drip was still present in 32.5%. Atrophic changes of the nasa

Thresholds in nasal histamine challenge in patients with allergic rhinitis, patients with hyperreflectory rhinopathy, and healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Characteristic symptoms of hyperreflectory rhinopathy include recurrent sneezing, nasal obstruction, and nasal secretion without an allergic background. The diagnosis can only be made if all differential diagnoses have been excluded. So far no clinical test has been established to reliably diagnose hyperreactivity of the nasal mucosa. The present study aimed to investigate whether nasal provocation with histamine allows identification of patients with hyperreflectory rhinopathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One-sided nasal challenge with histamine was applied to 13 patients with allergi

Nasal airflow: resistance and sensation.

For many years nasal resistance to airflow measured by rhinomanometry has been regarded as the objective measure of nasal patency. However, recently it has become apparent that this may not be the case. The present study was designed to affirm or refute this view by using large numbers of subjects and observations. Five hundred estimations of (objective) nasal resistance to airflow and (subjective) nasal sensation of airflow where carried out. No correlation could be demonstrated between these two parameters. It is concluded nasal resistance to airflow and nasal sensation of airflow are two se
