Acaricidal Activity and Transcriptional Modulation Induced by Randia aculeata Seed Extract in Rhipicephalus microplus.

BACKGROUND: The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus is a major ectoparasite affecting livestock worldwide, and its increasing resistance to synthetic acaricides has intensified the search for plant-derived alternatives. Although the hydroalcoholic seed extract of Randia aculeata has demonstrated acaricidal activity, its molecular effects in ticks remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the acaricidal activity of the extract and the underlying molecular mechanism against R. microplus larvae. METHODS: The acaricidal activity was evaluated using the larval packet test, and the underlying

Detection of Theileria in cattle ticks (Rhipicephalus microplus) (Canestrini, 1888) in upper-northeastern Thailand.

Theileria parasites were investigated from cattle ticks (Rhipicephalus microplus (Canestrini, 1888)) collected in 12 provinces in upper-northeastern Thailand based on the sequences of 18S rRNA and MPSP gene. Polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) and sequencing specific regions for the 18S rRNA gene revealed two species of Theileria pathogens; T. orientalis (n = 42) and T. sinensis (n = 31) with 94.50-100 % identity. In the provinces of upper-northeastern Thailand, the nucleotide diversity of Theileria's 18S rRNA for T. sinensis and T. orientalis were 0 % and 1.3 %. respectively. The MPSP gene was

Evaluation of the biological function of ribosomal protein S18 from cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus.

Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, also known as the cattle tick, causes severe parasitism and transmits different pathogens to vertebrate hosts, leading to massive economic losses. In the present study, we performed a functional characterization of a ribosomal protein from R. microplus to investigate its importance in blood feeding, egg production and viability. Ribosomal protein S18 (RPS18) is part of the 40S subunit, associated with 18S rRNA, and has been previously pointed to have a secondary role in different organisms. Rhipicephalus microplus RPS18 (RmRPS18) gene expression levels were

First Description of Mycoplasma agalactiae Anatomical Localization in Naturally Infected Hard Ticks (Rhipicephalus bursa).

Mycoplasma agalactiae (Ma) is considered the primary causative agent of contagious agalactia (CA) in sheep and goats, which causes severe losses to the small ruminant dairy industry. As early as 1816, it was thought that environmental factors played a role in pathogen maintenance in endemic areas. Specifically, recent studies hypothesized a vector role for arthropods in the epidemiology of disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and anatomical localization of Ma in naturally infected Riphicephalus bursa ticks to better evaluate tick-pathogen interactions. Salivary glands

Cross-resistance between macrocyclic lactones in populations of Rhipicephalus microplus in Brazil's semiarid region.

Rhipicephalus microplus, also known as the cattle tick, is the parasite with the greatest impact on cattle in Brazil. The most common method for controlling this tick is the application of synthetic chemical acaricides, especially ivermectin, which belongs to the group of macrocyclic lactones (MLs). However, because ivermectin is widely used, there is concern about the development of cross-resistance within this chemical class. Thus, engorged females were collected from farms with a history of resistance to ivermectin, which was the only one among the MLs that was used as an endectocide drug.

Selective control of Rhipicephalus microplus in a dairy cattle herd from different genetic groups.

Alternatives for Rhipicephalus microplus control are needed in the light of its resistance to acaricides. One of the ways to decrease the use of acaricides in a herd is selective control (SC). In the present study, SC was evaluated in a dairy herd consisting of different genetic groups: Holstein, Jersey, crossbreed and Girolando. Ticks were counted in the right anterior third region on around 90 cows, totaling nine evaluations at intervals of 21 days. Commercial pour-on acaricide was applied only when the infestation was greater than or equal to eight ticks larger than 4 mm in the anterior thi

Incidences of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini, 1888) Transmitted Pathogens in Cattle in West Africa.

CONTEXT AND PURPOSE: In a context of recent introduction of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus tick species in West Africa, the purpose of the authors is to estimate incidence density of cattle babesiosis either caused by Babesia bigemina or Babesia bovis, and cattle anaplasmosis. Incidence density represents how quickly a disease or a condition is occurring amongst a group of individuals at risk. METHODS: The longitudinal and prospective study design took place in south, centre, east, west and north of Côte d'Ivoire. Cattle have been followed for 12 months. At the end of each month, each an

Updating the application of Metarhizium anisopliae to control cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae).

The bovine tick, Rhipicephalus microplus, is the main ectoparasite of cattle and causes loss of billions of dollars worldwide in lost meat, milk, and leather production, as well as control expenses. In addition to systemically impacting the host during the parasitic act, this parasite is also an important disease vector. Traditionally, the main commercial control of the tick is achieved through application of chemical acaricides, which can leave residues in the meat and milk. Moreover, ticks can become resistant to these chemicals due to their massive and incorrect use. Many alternative method

Range expansion of the economically important Asiatic blue tick, Rhipicephalus microplus, in South Africa.

The Asiatic blue tick, Rhipicephalus microplus, a known vector of bovine babesiosis and bovine anaplasmosis, is of great concern in the cattle industry. For this reason, detailed knowledge of the distribution of R. microplus is vital. Currently, R. microplus is believed to be associated mainly with the northern and eastern Savanna and Grassland vegetation in South Africa. The objective of the study was to record the distribution of R. microplus, and the related endemic Rhipicephalus decoloratus, in the central-western region of South Africa that comprises Albany Thicket, Fynbos and Savanna veg

Pharmacological characterization of a tyramine receptor from the southern cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus.

The southern cattle tick (Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus) is a hematophagous external parasite that vectors the causative agents of bovine babesiosis or cattle tick fever, Babesia bovis and B. bigemina, and anaplasmosis, Anaplasma marginale. The southern cattle tick is a threat to the livestock industry in many locations throughout the world. Control methods include the use of chemical acaricides including amitraz, a formamidine insecticide, which is proposed to activate octopamine receptors. Previous studies have identified a putative octopamine receptor from the southern cattle tick in

Adrenergic ligands that block oviposition in the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus affect ovary contraction.

The tyraminergic/octopaminergic system is central for the control of arthropod oviposition. Previous works demonstrated that the pharmacological perturbation of this system inhibits oviposition in the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus. In this work, we describe a physiologically active whole-mount preparation of the contractile tick ovary that allows the quantitative videometrical analysis of ovary contraction in response to different compounds. Eight adrenergic ligands known to inhibit oviposition, including octopamine and tyramine were tested. These compounds exhibited antagonistic effects

Expression and functional characterization of boophilin, a thrombin inhibitor from Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus midgut.

Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is an ectoparasite responsible for an important decrease in meat, milk and leather production, caused both by cattle blood loss and by the transmission of anaplasmosis and babesiosis. R. microplus is a rich source of serine protease inhibitors, including the trypsin inhibitors BmTI-A and BmTI-6, the subtilisin inhibitor BmSI, and the recently described thrombin inhibitor, boophilin. Boophilin is a double Kunitz-type thrombin inhibitor, with the unusual ability to form a ternary complex with a second (non-thrombin) serine proteinase molecule. The large-scale

Biological parameters of Rhipicephalus linnaei determined using rabbits as experimental hosts under laboratory conditions.

Rhipicephalus linnaei is a tick widely associated with domestic dogs and is of recognized veterinary and public health importance. However, the recent taxonomic delimitation of this species, previously included within the Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato complex, has made the production of species-specific biological data necessary. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the life cycle parameters and reproductive performance of R. linnaei under controlled laboratory conditions. The specimens used were obtained from a laboratory colony established from engorged females collected from do

Acaricidal activity of various essential oil components against acaricide-resistant Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae).

Rhipicephalus microplus, an important ixodid tick species, poses significant economic and health challenges to the livestock directly by impairing animal productivity and serving as a vector for various pathogens. Although tick control strategies broadly integrate synthetic acaricides and environmental management, the emergence of acaricide resistance undermines these efforts thereby, necessitating alternative approaches. This study evaluated the acaricidal efficacy of six essential oil components (EOCs) such as cedrol, cinnamaldehyde, citral, eugenol, limonene and menthol against deltamethrin

Infection with Babesia bovis alters metabolic rates of Rhipicephalus microplus ticks across life stages.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic responses to infection differ based on arthropod and pathogen. Increased metabolic rates can result in faster depletion of energetic resources, and decreases may allow for energy conservation. Babesia bovis is a protozoan pathogen transmitted by the cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus microplus. Adult female ticks acquire B. bovis by feeding on an infected animal. Babesia bovis undergoes development and invades the ovaries where it is transmitted transovarially to tick offspring. The effects of infection on R. microplus metabolic rate are not well studied. METHODS: We teste
